15 Patterns of Creative Process Redesign J. Ray Cho Abstract Process Innovation (PI) is a fundamental rethinking and redesign of business processes to achieve improvements in critical contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed. One of the most important areas in PI is the visioning of the future state and redesigning of the processes. This paper describes the 15 recurring patterns of process design that Dr. Hammer, the primary originator and a leading expert in process redesign, has experienced over the last 20 years. The design patterns can be used as basic principles or underlying rules of process redesign. A few examples are: relocate work to customers, relocate work from customers, create hybrid centralized and decentralized structures, and move work to the best location for it to be performed. The challenge of the process redesign is that there are no rules or algorithms for the task. One s creativity is the only resource that we can depend on. We hope that these 15 patterns can help stimulate one s mind and jumpstart the creative process. Some examples and cases are also provided for better understanding of the patterns.
