Geographical Analysis of National Monument Topography* Kwon, Dong-Hi 1) Abstract : As of January 2010, 59 topography have been designated as national monuments. From the geographical point of view, these national monument topography can be categorized into weathering, coastal, karst, volcanic, tectonic, etc. The 59 national monument topography are mostly tectonic (28), followed by karst and volcanic (12 each), coastal (5), and weathering (2). In the early stages of designating national monument topography, tectonic, karst, and volcanic topography were the major designations for national monuments. Tectonic topography were associated with fossil, whereas karst and volcanic topography were very scarce as special topography. Recently, however, even common topography such as coastal and weathering topography are starting to draw attention for their academic value with regard to size and characteristics. By region, Jeju (11), Gangwon (10), and Gyeongnam (9) have a concentrated distribution; they have relatively large portions of volcanic, karst, and tectonic topography, respectively.
