Giuliano Pisapia Mayor of Milan December 2015 Three years: that is the age of the Milano Design Film Festival. An age that is both small and big. Small enough to keep growing and large enough to have already grown. The Festival has, rifghtly so, become a fixed event in Milan s cultural calendar. Its arrival colours the Milano autumn with innovation and quality. The city council has decided to encurage and support this unique festival which interprets and relaunches Milan s creativity. This year the festival has taken a step further: onto the international stage. The council has asked all those with an interest in the city to open up even further toward the rest of the world and the Milano Design Flm Festival has responded. Noteworthy in this respect not only the stages in London and Korea but, in particular, the agreement reached with the Architectural Film Festival of Rotterdam in the framework of videos Cycling City Project. In collaboration with bikemi, a short bicycle film has been shot in Milan which features the city s architecture and places of interest. As always, the value of the festival lies in its ability to create a dialogue between cinema and design. This year, with Expo, the Festival is included in the Expo City billboard and over 70 percent of the productions featured are international. The project Keep it Simple and Short is also in line with Expo and sees the realization of a winning short film that is linked to the theme of nutrition. Milano Design Film Festival A festival on the culture of the project 밀라노디자인필름페스티벌프로젝트문화의축제 Antonella Dedini Silvia Robertazzi December 2015 History, current affairs, innovation. Art films and new directors. Research into the expressive codes of audiovisual language. A location in the heart of the city of design. Milano Design Film Festival (MDFF) is an information platform, a meeting place, a place to experiment and to update one s skills, characterised by the quality of its content and an innovative and effective ability to dialogue with a cross section of the public composed of architects, designers, enthusiasts but also by those who are simply curious in the city. The annual event takes place in October, at the Anteo spaziocinema, the multiplex in the heart of the Brera area, one of the liveliest districts for design and fashion in Milan. It is based on a structured program of recent and past films with the objective of clearly showing how time is capable of changing the points of view and the languages of culture and that the ability to innovate also comes through creativity. The festival, in its entirety, puts itself forward as a new means of communication and cultural dissemination, revealing thus the composite view of the landscape of life and of living, in which everything is a project. With the themes of Design, Architecture, City Planning, Sustainability, each edition devotes a special curatorship into an indepth interdisciplinary theme, carried out by a recognised professional. With regards to the widespread use and adoption of audiovisual language, the program touches on diverse genres and filmmaking techniques (documentaries, entertainment, feature films, short films and clips) and builds a schedule of stimuli and voices including moments of discussion and workshops with designers, architects, producers, directors, critics, professors and students from Italy and the world. Furthermore, from the second edition it promotes the thematic contest of ideas K.I.S.S. Keep it Simple n Short for the realisation of a short film backed by a cross section of technical partners.particular attention is given, in conclusion, to Italian productions in the sector, thus giving them space in the program and promoting them both within and beyond the national borders. In addition to the key event in October, the MDFF activities continue throughout the year, with MDFF Capsule Screening, which includes bespoke and itinerant spot projects in Milan, in Italy and abroad and the monthly exhibition of Cinema Nascosto (Hidden Cinema). Created in 2013 by the MiCue Milano Design research laboratory, MDFF is sponsored by the Milan City Council and EXPO 2015. Seoul Design Festival Seoul Design Festival A stepping stone for Korean designers looking to debut abroad and a gateway for foreign designers into Korea Hosted by Design House, a creative content company focused on promoting designers, Seoul Design Festival is Korea s most prominent design exhibition. Ever since it was first held in 2002, the festival has featured high-quality content created by competitive companies, designer brands, and outstanding up-and-coming designers, all selected through an application process. It is the single most powerful driving force behind the Korean design industry. Based on the theme Humorous Design and held at Seoul Arts Center s Hangaram Design Museum, the first Seoul Design Festival was in 2002. Since then, the festival has been held annually under a variety of themes: Star Designer (2003), Hot Style (2004), Designer Promotion (2005), Designer s Eye (2006), Design Seoul (2007), Art Works (2008), Designer for Dinner (2009), Project Thank You (2010), Designer Party (2011), Designer Promotion (2012), Sharing Design (2013), and Well-aged Life, Well-balanced Design (2014). The festival has now become an international event with an annual average of 90,000 visitors, including designers, marketers, trend research organizations, and notable figures from the culture sector. Each year, the festival features diverse types of interesting design content organized into different sections of the festival space, including Design Solution (PR booths of design companies), Creative Korea (showcase of Korean design content), Global Designer (showcase of international design content), and Designer s Lab. Beginning on December 2, the 2015 Seoul Design Festival will be held under the theme of HOBBY, focusing on fashion as the primary means of expressing personal preference and taste. Seoul Design Week 2015 서울디자인위크 2015 Seoul Design Week 2015, hosted by Seoul Design Foundation, is developing into a world class design festival, exemplifying itself as successful privatepublic collaboration. Starting from December 2nd to 6th, Seoul Design Week will take place at DDP, COEX and other major spots in Seoul. While coloring the entire city with various design programs, Seoul Design Week will proudly show Seoul s design competitiveness to the world. With the motto Seoul s Design Wizard (invisible design, design that makes citizens happy), Seoul Design Week, just like fresh air which is invisible but makes us breathe, will let citizens enjoy the value of design by offering a wealth of quality programs including exhibitions, forums, exhibitions, and markets. Greetings 인사말 Keun Lee Seoul Design Foundation CEO Younghye Lee Design House Inc. President Every year, the Seoul Design Festival introduces the world s latest design trends in Korea. This year s festival includes the first Design Film Festival, held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in partnership with Seoul Design Foundation and the Milano Design Film Festival (MDFF). A total of 32 films, comprising 14 local works and 18 works recommended by the MDFF, will be screened over a four-day period, from December 2 to 5, 2015, during Seoul Design Week. Some of the works selected by the MDFF, including works on the world-famous architects Gio Ponti and Le Corbusier, were created this year and will be making their Korean premiere during the Design Film Festival. And films related to major Italian architects and designers such as Carlo Scarpa; Italian design brands, including B&B Italia and Fornasetti; and the fashion documentary on Diana Vreeland; along with design films produced in China that were showcased in Milano and at last year s Beijing Design Week, will be played as well. In addition, the festival will present films that introduce works by local media artists, designers, and architects in their 30s or 40s and feature interviews with them. Achille Castiglioni 아킬레카스틸리오니 Architects, artists, designers, graphics and fashion designers invited in Aspen for represented Italy of 1989. 1989 년아스펜에초대된건축가, 예술가, 디자이너, 그래픽아티스트, 패션디자이너들. Synopsis p. 61 by Porzia Bergamasco 포르치아베르가마스코 Photo credit Fondazione Achille Castiglioni The Italian travel to the Aspen Campus in June 1989 on the occasion of the International Design Conference, the annual interdisciplinary meeting organized by the Aspen Institute founded in Chicago as Institute for Humanistic Studies in 1949, remains unforgettable. The editors, Paolo Viti and Bill Lacy, identified in the title Italian Manifesto the right style to be used to present the Italian creativity to the Aspen audience just eight years after another similar event. The Italian Manifesto, a title which seems sufficiently provocative, and at the same time, obscure enough to cover all the various topics we wish to present. This is what is written in the introduction of the catalogue, graphically cured by Italo Lupi. Derived from the fine-sounding Italian word manifestare, manifesto is a public declaration of intentions, motives or views, and that certainly sounds like what we expect of our speakers and the program. Not com- 1989 년 6 월국제디자인컨퍼런스의특별행사로아스펜캠퍼스에펼쳐졌던이탈리아의향연은잊지못할기억이다. 이컨퍼런스는 1949 년시카고에서고전문학연구기관으로발족된아스펜연구소가매년주최하는학제간행사로, 당시행사타이틀이었던 이탈리아매니페스토 (Italian Manifesto) 를설명하는자리에서에디터파올로비티 (Paolo Viti) 와빌레이시 (Bill Lacy) 는아스펜의청중들에게이탈리아의창조성을제시하기위해선택한표현이라고천명했다. 이탈리아매니페스토 (Italian Manifesto) 라는제목은그자체로도매우도발적이지만동시에포괄성을띠고있기때문에우리가보여주고자하는여러주제들을아우르기에적합한표현 이라고말했다. 이탈로루피 (Italo Lupi) 의명료한디자인이돋보이는카탈로그에는이런소개글이적혀있다. 멋진음률의이탈리아어 manifestare ( 마니파스타레 ) 에서파생된 매니페스토 는 어떤것의의도, 동기, 또는관점을대중에게선언하는것 을의미한다. 또한이것은이번행사의발표자들과행사자체를통해우리가의도하는바이다. 이들은또한타이틀에만 pletely satisfied, they also added the sub-title The Culture of the Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine Cities. Lacking was a modifying phrase that would underscore our intentions, provide a framework for what it was about Italian design that was different than other kinds of design and why. From here, the reference to the special and unique personality that characterizes every Italian city and make it different from the others was an acute intuition stressed by a pinch of humor. And for those who are literal, it offers the possibility for a debate on whether are really 999 or 989 unique cities in Italy. Once the poetic license, the beauty and ugly of being unique and different - however Italian - were accepted, arrived in Aspen: the perfect scale miniatures, that were the wooden models by Giovanni Sacchi, from the architectural buildings by Gae Aulenti and Ettore Sottsass jr, to the typewriters by Marcello Nizzoli and Mario Bellini. The bicycles by Cinelli including the model interpreted by Keith Haring two years before that had already travelled the world for about ten years thanks to Antonio Colombo s creative and entrepreneurial impulse. A catwalk dedicated to the fashion show of the 1990 fall/winter collection by Gianfranco Ferré presented as the Italian Frank Lloyd Wright. And by considering the cultural interdisciplinary mood of the exhibition, even a selection of movies of our most famous directors with their milestones: Bernardo Bertolucci (Before the Revolution), Vittorio De Sica (The Bicycle Thief), Federico Fellini (The White Sheik), Sergio Leone (A Fistful of Dollars), Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Pier Paolo Pasolini (The Gospel According to St. Matthew), Roberto Rossellini (The Human Voice and The Miracle), Ettore Scola (The Family), Paolo e Vittorio Taviani (Chaos (Kaos)) and Lina Wertmüller (Swept Away ). And then a big group of designers, entrepreneurs and critics alternating at the conference microphones, at talk shows and for the interviews. Among these, we remember the interview with Achille Castiglioni who was introduced by a very young Paola Antonelli: despite he was already over 70, not even on that occasion skimped he his usual contagious enthusiasm expressed with words and gestures that did not need an interpreter. From young student works to indie documentaries, and artistic videos, this selection looks at a transforming landscape where the smallscale and the hand-crafted are portrayed as repository of contemporary innovation and historical reconstruction. The pieces are generally found on antique markets or as souvenirs in museums and touristic shops. The inhabitants of the village changed their homes into workshops, built traditional kilns and hire their families and friends, crafting amazing replicas with limited resource and tools a business that keeps young people from moving out into big cities to earn enough and feed their families. The Miao are well known for the complexity, sophistication, and variety of their weaving. Elaine Ng Yan Ling has been working on site with local village craftsmen introducing an unconventional approach and replacing the warp with transparent and high strength nylon. Bright metallic yarns criss-crosses the fabric to create a shimmering surface reminiscent of the metalwork usually employed in the trim. The word Yu in Chinese indicates the paper s purity and smoothness, and Kou is the ancient term designating a unit of measure, signifying one piece or two pieces. The film was shot in a small village deep in the forest at the heart of Wuyi Mountains, a small settlement made by only 10 households, where no cement roads nor houses. The director records the production process of Yukou Paper with poetic and picturesque visual style, expressing deep nostalgia for the gradually disappearing hand craft. An hour with Gio Ponti in 1976 and from which you use a few clips. Yes, his great clarity and communicative abilities were evident as well as a constant desire to create and re-create the things that inspired him. It was a starting point, naturally along with all the material provided by his heirs, especially by Salvatore Licitra, curator of the Gio Ponti Archive. That show, as a whole, is of important documentary value, also due to the filming in his studio and his home. Your documentary brings us to current time, with interviews of contemporary names well known to us, amongst others, Robert Wilson and Benedikt Taschen. Bob Wilson is well known for the 70 Angels on the façade show that was staged in 1988 at the Teatro Piccolo in Milan to celebrate 70 years of Domus magazine. He quotes Ponti as being a renaissance artist, capable of creating worlds, of capturing that transversal quality so widely criticised by others. And I wanted to interview Taschen because I was curious to investigate how a German collector and editor who lives in Los Angeles was able to develop a passion for Ponti. As Nanda Vigo says, a designer who thought at 390. She was one of his most enthusiastic students. She is often corrected by those more rigorous than she is, who only see as far as that 360 vision but she stresses that Ponti s design abilities and thoughts go well beyond that. You focus particularly on Palazzo Montecatini, Villa Planchart and the Pirelli skyscraper. And naturally on the grand adventure that is the Domus. I chose works that could express Ponti s global design vision: from a building to internal details where his idea of design that is functional to space is evident and where design and architecture become one. It is creating a thorough cultural system that is an art form, a means of communication and documentaries that touch on all artistic and entrepreneurial activities, professing video content and their evolution as the most direct form of communication with respect to the more traditional forms of communication. The areas of design and architecture are also adapting: many professional firms are now choosing to present themselves to the public via cinematic stories and an equal number of companies use it not only merely for commercials but also as a medium to transmit content, artfully conveying emotions and brand identity. For its third edition (15-18 October 2015) Milano Design Film Festival, founded as a champion in its field, as a creator and observer of this great change, promoted an ad hoc round table entitled The new languages of communication.
