Glendale Unified School District Math Curriculum Grade 6 Parent Information Unit 1: Operations What Your Child Will Learn: Unit 1 reviews addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals and fractions concepts that were taught in previous grades. Students build on this knowledge to use the standard algorithms for long division, division of decimals, and division of fractions. This unit sets the foundation of arithmetic with decimal numbers and fractions, which is necessary later in algebra. Conceptual understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of all positive numbers is the focus. In addition to operations with positive rational numbers, students will further explore factors and multiples, as well as the distributive property of multiplication over addition. MORE SPECIFICALLY, CHILDREN WILL LEARN HOW TO: Find all factors of a number, greatest common factor (GCF) and common factors of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100. List multiples of a number, find the least common multiple (LCM) and common multiples of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Uses of GCF and LCM in real life situation. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1-100 with a common factor. Fluently add, subtract, multiply and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithms. Understand that moving the decimal in the dividend and divisor is multiplying the dividend and divisor by the same power of 10. Divide fractions. Justify a quotient by relating it to multiplication. Use visual fraction models to represent division of fractions. Standards: 6.NS.1, 6.NS.2, 6.NS.3, 6.NS.4 For more information on the strategies, standards and explanations, visit the Grade 7 Chapter of the Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten through Grade 12 at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/documents/mathfwgrade6lmg2.pdf Sample Problem: (6.NS.1, division of fractions) A glossary is provided in the Guide for Extraordinary Mathematics for Students (GEMS).

Activities at Home: Choose numbers to make fractions. Add, subtract, multiply, divide or simplify using the fractions you chose. With a partner, choose numbers. Race to find the common factors of those numbers. With a partner, choose numbers. Race to find the first three common multiples of those numbers. Choose decimal numbers. Add, subtract, multiply or divide the decimals. Find a recipe in a cookbook or on the internet. Try doubling or tripling each of the measurements. Try finding the measurements for a batch and a half (multiply each ingredient by 1 1/2). Try finding the measurements of each ingredient if you make half a batch or try dividing each ingredient by 3 ¼. Interactive Games and Websites: Some of the interactive games and websites use Java Script. Some browsers (for example Google Chrome) do not support Java. Try a different browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.
