Yun Bok Lee s World Hideharu Ogawa, Poet Brancusi's Bird in Space gallantly swoops down to the ground from the sky, while Yun Bok Lee s Body and Venus come alive by quietly rising up from the ground. It seeks the body until all parts are satisfied as if it is providence from nature. At other times it propagates itself with a yearning to return to its basic form. However, it does not insist on the details of the body. The important motif for his series of works is their transitional nature. Sometimes it acts like liquid rather than a metal and it continues to grow by freely oscillating. In order to transform the stainless steel into the body, it needs to be treated like a liquid. Every time an outside scene is mirrored on to the risen work, it slowly starts to show a new countenance by reflecting nature s breath. However, the changes are only very subtle. The sculpture lies in an unsteady equilibrium as it strains to return to its original form. Perhaps we can call it a slowly growing life-form. Here, we can see Lee s intention to be always working in a coordinated fashion. Yun Bok Lee s work is pure and elegant. The elegance comes from the use of stainless steel, but yet possesses a longing for an unprecedented beauty. If the beauty is an incarnation of soul and spirit then Lee is seeking a world that is created by merging the stainless steel material and nature. This almost seems to be achieved unintentionally. The body starts to rise up and stops at the midway and checks for its stability. Lee s art tells the story of the current condition of his heart, which is elevated to a higher order so that a transformational harmony can be perceived. For Lee the beauty resides in the potential that a secretly hidden spirit possesses inside the work. The work is born out of the conversation with the hidden spirit; his work skillfully combines a delicate light that passes through the chaos before words, and a delicate life. In addition, when the work is one step away from its completion, Lee believes it has unlimited potential in this state. It is satisfied but only just. Then the body sheds its belonging, bursts forth, and slowly starts to oscillate like a one gigantic shimmering water droplet. Lee is not constrained in his work nor limited by haughtiness. Humbly he tries to always allow a natural style to emerge. He gives the hard stainless steel its softness and warmth from his free spirit. As a result the metal becomes liquid and remembers its forgotten whole body. It drips on the ground by the gravity, and liquified, the metal appears to flow up and down. As you face his work, you can visualize their oscillating movement. It is an illusion produced by his work and its surrounding. As I view Lee s work, deep within my five senses, I have already started to converse with him. The ripples are stirred up on the surface of the work and it disappears. The ever changing surrounding continually breathes new color into his work. It is continuously changing it s appearance. It is a never ending, circulating beauty; a vivid new life; a basis for an origin of life; a hidden opportunity to seek new beauty. Hideharu Ogawa Born in 1951 in Tokyo. Published many poetry books such as Sense of Being a Tomato, Soseiki(Genesis), Birth, and Book of the Dead. Also published a collection of critical essays Poesy, Dialogues Birth of Arts,etc. Currently working as a trustee of Japan Poets Club, a member of editorial board of monthly Poetry and Thought, and planning advisor for monthly art magazine Gallery.
