11 The importance of the December 19 th Republic of Korea presidential election does not require much explanation. The peoples interest in the upcoming election will be centered upon the management of North Korea and other relevant issues concerning our country s North Korea policy. If the next president is able to safeguard South Korea s values and manage the North wisely, South Korea will be able to achieve further development and follow a path of prosperity. However, if the administration abandons our country s values and blunders are made in dealings with North Korean officials, inter-korean relations could prove to be a national calamity. At present, the new young leader of North Korea has taken on the tremendous burden of all sorts of difficulties facing his country. As well, future developments are likely to be plagued by numerous situations of uncertainty. Hence, one of the greatest difficulties will be accurately predicting the future, making the necessity for a wise North Korea policy even greater. Therefore, among the many challenges facing our country, the next administration s North Korea policy is of special significance. Furthermore, there have been numerous debates regarding the current ROK administration s North Korea policy. Some have evaluated President Lee Myung-bak s firm North Korea policy as both resolute and irrational; and that it did little to improve peninsular relations. On the other hand, others asset that President Lee Myung-bak s North Korea policy broke away from the former two administrations cream diplomacy and attempted to change the quality of the North Korean regime. An accurate and objective discussion on present assessments will aid the next administration in establishing a well rationed North Korea policy. In this light, evaluation of the ROK s North Korea policy from both domestic and foreign perspectives along with proposals for international cooperation must be made available to serve the development of a desirable and practical North Korea policy alternative for the next administration. The Sejong Institute has prepared this conference to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the current ROK administration s North Korea policy and discuss a vision of a desirable North Korea policy for the next administration. We would like to achieve this aim by inviting world-renowned scholars and professionals from home and abroad to present their papers and in-depth discussions throughout the three sessions of the conference. We would greatly appreciate your attendance and participation in the conference in order for it to be a success. The Sejong Institute will put forth our best efforts to ensure the contents of the conference will serve as a productive policy alternative for national development. Thank you.
