1 논문 한국통신학회논문지 '10-05 Vol. 35 No. 5 Chirp spread spectrum 변조를이용한인체내외통신기법 정회원김경철, 전명운, 준회원김기현, 정회원이정우, 종신회원남상욱 Human Body Communication Using Chirp Spread Spectrum Modulation Kyungchul Kim*, Myeongwoon Jeon* Regular Members, Kihyun Kim** Associate Member, Jungwoo Lee* Regular Member, Sangwook Nam** Lifelong Member 요 약 다양한분야에서 IT와 BT의융합이논의되고있으며의료산업에서캡슐내시경의개발은인체를매개로무선통신을한다는점에서그예라할수있을것이다. 하지만인체채널에서의통신은송신전력의제한이엄격할수밖에없으며, 아직채널특성에대한활발한연구도이루어지지않아서그채널을추정하기가매우어렵다. 따라서정확한채널추정이필요한일반적인부호화 / 복호화기법을사용할수없으며, 기존통신망에서유입되는간섭신호에취약할수밖에없다. 본논문에서는채널추정이필요없으면서도, 주위간섭신호의영향에강인한 Chirp Spread Spectrum Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying(CSS-DBPSK) 기법을소개하고, Chirp Spread Spectrum On-Off Keying (CSS-OOK) 기법을제안한다. CSS-DBPSK, CSS-OOK를이용하면일반 OOK에비하여 target BER (Bit Error Rate) 10-5) 을위한 Eb/N0을약 5dB, 2dB 낮출수있으며간섭신호에대한성능저하도막을수있다. Key Words : Human Body Comm., CSS System, CSS-DBPSK, CSS-OOK, OOK ABSTRACT Convergence of IT and BT is considered in many area, especially in medical care industry. The example of this trend is a capsule endoscope. But in a capsule endoscope, communication through human body has a few restrictions. At first, the transmit power should be limited not to have a bad effect on human organs and for the battery capacity. Second, the channel characteristic of human body has not been examined exactly. Third, general modulation / demodulation techniques which require a channel estimation cannot be used because of battery limit. There also may be a lot of interference signals because a capsule endoscope uses UWB bandwidth. In this paper, we introduce Chirp Spread Spectrum Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying(CSS-DBPSK) and propose Chirp Spread Spectrum On-Off Keying(CSS-OOK) which don't require a channel estimation and robust to interference signals. Using CSS-DBPSK or CSS-OOK, we can get 5 db or 2~3 db of Eb/N0 gain at 10-5 target BER. 2 논문 /Chirp spread spectrum 변조를이용한인체내외통신기법 Ⅰ. 서론 최근무선통신기술이발달함에따라, 무선통신시스템에있어서초소형, 저전력송수신기 (transceiver) 를설계및제작하는것이가능하게되었으며, 이러한초소형, 저전력송수신기는기존의통신장치와달리인간의몸속에투입되어인체의진단및치료의용도로활용될수있게되었다. 특히, 초소형, 저전력송수신기를이용한무선통신시스템은, 인체내부에서영상정보, 온도, 압력, ph 등의인체에관한정보를획득하고획득한정보를인체외부에위치하는시스템으로전송하는기능을수행하는, 인체통신시스템에적용되어널리활용되고있다. 대표적으로, 무선캡슐형내시경시스템을예로들수있는데, 이러한인체통신시스템에따르면, 구강을통해서삼켜진무선캡슐형내시경이소화기관을따라이동하며인체내부기관의영상정보를획득하고, 획득한정보를체외에위치한수신기로전송하는기능을수행할수있다. [1~4] 그런데, 인체통신시스템은인체내부를매질로하여무선통신을수행하는것이기때문에, 무선신호가인체를통과하면서전송손실이크게발생할수있으며, 고주파신호를사용하는경우에는인체에유해한영향을끼칠수도있다는문제점을가지고있다. 위와같은이유로인하여, 인체를매개로하는통신, 즉, 인체채널을통한통신은송신전력의제한이엄격할수밖에없고, 이에따라인체채널의특성을정확하게추정할수있는기술에대한연구가활발히이루어지지않아인체채널의특성을추정하기가매우어려운실정이다. 따라서정확한채널추정이요구되는일반적인무선통신기법은인체통신에사용되기부적합하다는한계를갖고있으며, 이러한일반적인무선통신기법을인체통신에그대로사용하는경우기타통신망으로부터유입되는간섭신호에취약할수밖에없게되는문제점이발생하게된다. 실제로, 기존에개발되던캡슐내시경은 On-Off Keying(OOK) 방식을기본으로하고있는데, 이방식은수신신호의크기로만복원하는것에따른외부간섭에대한문제점을가지고있었다. 따라서이러한문제점을최소화할수있는인체통신방법및시스템에대한개발의필요성이대두되게되었다. 본논문은위와같은문제점을해결하기위한것으로서, Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying (DBPSK) 과 Chirp Spread Spectrum(CSS) 변조방식 을결합한 CSS-DBPSK를소개하고, OOK 변조방식과 CSS 변조방식을결합한시스템을제안함으로써, 채널추정이필요없으면서도주위간섭신호의영향에강인하고간단하게구현가능한인체통신시스템을제공하는것을그목적으로한다. Ⅱ. 본론 UWB 통신은중심주파수의 20% 이상의점유대역폭을가지거나 500MHz 이상의점유대역폭을차지하는무선전송기술로써 [5], 낮은전력을사용하기때문에기존에사용중인주파수대역과간섭없이공유하여사용할수있으며전송속도도높일수있다. 그리고 Spreading spectrum 기법의한종류인 CSS 기법은시간에따라주파수가변하는 chirp 신호를사용하여전송하는데이터의주파수대역을넓히고넓은 band pass filter(bpf) 를사용한다 [6~9]. CSS 기법은소비전력이낮고시간분해능이높으며, 주위잡음과간섭신호의영향을줄일수있고, multi-path fading 과도플러효과에도강하다고알려졌다 [12]. 인체내매질의평균적특성을갖는균일매질을가정하고주파수분석을한결과, 400~600MHz 대역에서최적손실을보인다는결과가있다 [1]. 본논문에서는 20MHz의데이터를가정하고, 500MHz를중심으로 100MHz의폭을갖는 UWB 통신을이용하는캡슐내시경의송신기법에대하여 Matlab으로실험을하였다. 한편캡슐내시경에서는배터리의제약때문에기존에일반적으로사용하는채널추정방법을사용할수없다. 채널추정이필요없는시스템으로는 DBPSK 시스템과 OOK 시스템을들수있다 [10,11]. DBPSK 시스템은 OOK에비하여성능이비교적좋지만, 수신기가약간복잡하다. 그리고 OOK는매우간단한수신기를사용하는대신주변의간섭신호에영향을많이받는단점이있다. 기존에개발된캡슐 그림 1. CSS 방식에사용되는펄스신호의예 Fig. 1. Example of pulse signal in CSS system 441

3 한국통신학회논문지 '10-05 Vol. 35 No. 5 내시경은 500MHz 대역에서 OOK 기술을사용하였다. 하지만이대역이 TV방송에서사용하는대역에포함되기때문에상황에따라서극심한간섭신호를겪는경우가발생하였다. 이에인체채널특성상 MHz 대역을사용하고, 낮은전력으로도간섭신호에대해강인한기술이필요하게되었으며, CSS 기법과의결합을고려하게되었다. 2.1 CSS-DBPSK CSS-DBPSK의구조는아래그림 2와같다. OOK 시스템은디지털데이터 1 과 0 을그대로아날로그펄스 1 과 0 에대응시켜전송한다. 반면 DBPSK를사용하면디지털데이터 1, 0 을아날로그 1 과 -1 에대응시켜전송하기때문에송신파워를두배사용하게되고, 잡음신호의크기가같다면 DBPSK의성능이 OOK의성능보다좋을수밖에없다. 이에더하여 CSS 변조방법을사용하면간섭신호에강인한시스템을구축할수있다. 구체적으로 CSS-DBPSK 변조방법을사용하여 1010 의디지털데이터를전송할때의파형은아래와같다. 수신단에서받은신호를 BPF에통과시키면잡음의영향을줄일수있다. 그다음 mixer를통과시키고, amplitude를비교하여송신한데이터를복조할수있는것이다. 하지만, 데이터를복조하는과정에서그림 2와같이 1 bit delay가필요하고, 이과정에서정확하게 synchronization(sync) 을맞춰야하는 DBPSK의특성상실제구현이어렵다는단점이있다. 수신신호의한심볼 time 정확하게 delay해서다시수신신호와곱해야하는데, 아날로그단에서한심볼 time을정확하게 delay 하는것이어려운것이다. 또한디지털단에서처리하기도쉽지않다. 500MHz를중심으로 100MHz 이상의폭을가진신호그자체를수 GHz대로샘플링하여처리하는것은불가능하다. 만약다운컨버팅기술을이용하더라도, 최소한 300MHz 이상의샘플링이필요하고이신호를실시간으로처 그림 2. 4 논문 /Chirp spread spectrum 변조를이용한인체내외통신기법 리하기위해서는최소한수 GHz대의프로세서가필요한데, 이또한간단한 FPGA 보드에서는구현이불가능한것이다. 실제로수신단에서 sync가맞지않았을때의성능은그림 7에있다. 한편, 다음절에서살펴볼 CSS-OOK를사용하면약간의성능열화가있지만 CSS-DBPSK와같이 sync를맞출필요가없어진다. 2.2 CSS-OOK CSS-OOK의구조는그림 4와같다. CSS-OOK는 OOK 신호를 CSS를통해넓은주파수영역에퍼트려보내는기법이다. 따라서 OOK 시스템의수신기에사용하던것보다넓은밴드의 BPF를사용해야한다. 그러면수신신호의유 / 무를통해복조를하는간단한방법으로데이터를복조할수있다. 위와마찬가지로 1010 의디지털데이터를전송할때 CSS-OOK 시스템에서의파형은그림 5와같다. CSS-OOK에서데이터를복구하는데꼭 LPF가필요한것은아니지만, 파형의모양을보고자그림 5의 3에는 power detector를통과한신호를다시 LPF에통과시켜파형을그렸다. CSS-OOK는 CSS 변조기법을사용하기때문에간섭이나잡음신호에강인하다. 또한 CSS-DBPSK 보다성능이떨어지지만간단하게수신신호의유 / 무 를통해복조를하기때문에쉽게구현가능하다는장점이있다. 2.3 실험결과그림 6은 Eb/N0(bit energy to noise power spectral density ratio) 에따른일반 OOK, CSS-DBPSK, CSS-OOK의 BER (bit error rate) 성능그래프이다. 실선은간섭신호가없을때이고, 점선은간섭신호가있을때의성능이다. CSS-DBPSK는 CSS-OOK, OOK보다성능이월등히좋다. 하지만이는정확하게 time sync를맞추었을경우이고 sync가어긋났을때의성능은그림 7과같다. CSS-DBPSK를실제로구현하면 sync를정확하게맞추기가어렵기때문에성능을보장할수없다. 그림 6에서보듯이, CSS-OOK의경우 CSS 기법을사용하지않는일반 OOK 보다넓은주파수밴드를사용하기때문에잡음신호를더많이겪게되어 Eb/N0가작을때에는일반 OOK보다성능이떨어진다는단점이있다. 하지만이는 BER이매우큰경우이고, 우리의관심영역밖이기때문에실제인체통신시스템을구현하는데에는일반 CSS-OOK가일반 OOK 보다좋은성능을보인다고말할수있을것이다. 구체적으로는 target BER을 10-5이라할때, OOK보다 2~3dB의이득을가진다. 또한앞서언급한바와같이 CSS-OOK는 OOK에비하여간섭신호에강인하다. 그림 8은수신 Eb/N0가 12dB로고정되어있을때, 간섭신호의크기에따른성능의그래프이다. 간섭신호가커지면 CSS-OOK와 OOK 모두성능이나빠지지만, CSS-OOK가 OOK에비하여간섭신호에대하여월등히안정함을확인할수있다. 그림 4. BER performance of CSS-DBPSK, CSS-OOK and OOK 본논문에서는무선캡슐내시경에사용가능한 CSS-OOK 변조기법을제안하고, 기존에소개된 CSS-DBPSK 기법및가장간단히구현할수있는 OOK 기법과그성능을비교하였다. OOK 시스템에비하여 CSS-DBPSK의성능이월등히좋고, 간섭신호에대한영향도적음을확인할수있다. 하지만 CSS-DBPSK 변조기법은수신단에서 Sync. 를제대로맞추기어렵기때문에실제로구현이어렵다는단점이있다. 또한 CSS-OOK를사용하면 peak-to-peak voltage 측면에서 CSS-DBPSK의절반만사용하기때문에인체에미치는영향이나배터리용량과관련하여이득이있다. 게다가 CSS-OOK 변조기법은 CSS 를사용하기때문에간섭신호에일반 OOK에비하여간섭신호에강인하다는장점이있다. 그리고일반 OOK에비하여넓은주파수밴드를사용하기때문에잡음신호가더많이끼어낮은 Eb/N0 영역에서는성능이떨어지지만, 실제캡슐내시경의 target BER 영역에서는 2~3dB의이득을얻을수있음을실험을통하여확인하였다. 참고문헌 그림 7.
