ABSTRACT Korean Students in Teikoku Art School (1929-1945) with Focus on Department of Occidental Painting Jeon Hye sook This study is on Teikoku Art School in Japan which were handed over to Musashino Art University in 1962 and its Korean students from 1929 to 1945 The purpose of this study is to investigate and clarify the relations of style of professor painters of Teikoku Art School with Korean students Many of Japanese painters who presented in the end of 1920s when Teikoku Art School was founded had returned from France and through showing their works incorporating the new trends they had absorbed at the exhibitions Nika kai 1930 nen kyokai and Dokuritsu Bijutsu kyukai had great influence on younger painters The number of Korean students in Teikoku Art School from 1929 to 1945 is one hundred and fifty two This is the result from investigation that we examined the school register the graduation name lists new student name lists the registered name list of The Newspaper of schoolfellow the list of Korean students etc in cooperation with Musashino Art University 152 Korean students are classified into four groups 40 graduates 70 removed 23 withdrawals 19 students who do not exist in the school register We could not find a lot of records of Korean students activity in Teikoku Art School but through the names of student reported in The 74
Newspaper of schoolfellow we could take some evidences of their activities Some Korean students not only had participated in Chosun Art Exhibition before going abroad but had been accepted for several exhibition in Japan during their school days After graduation their activities were divided into the participation in Chosun Art Exhibition and the organization or join of group exhibitions out of office like New Artist Association The curriculum of Teikoku Art School included Japanese language and literature Chinese language History of thoughts Psychology Philosophy Aesthetics Art History French language and painting practices Many professors of occidental painting in Teikoku Art School presented Fauvist style Fauvist painter professors like Kiken Nakagawa Takashi Nakayama Tatzshiro Takabatake Kaztaka Nakano Masaroo Miyasaka studied in France and they received instruction of Matisse Vlaminck Derain They contributed to transplant French Fauvism into Japan over the roughly ten years between 1920 and 1930 They influenced on Korean students who would develope their own style after they returned to Korea Although Korean students presented mixed style of realism Fauvism Impressionism Post Impressionism etc it is sure that they received European new art trends through the professors paintings and education 1929 1945 75
