He probably had an amazing friend or wanted one like that. So do I have a friend who d let me borrow in emergency regardless of its sum, or bleed for me if an accident happened? How many people could a person befriend in a lifetime? If you have just one friend in your life you are successful says anonymous, but in contemporary society people quite often encounter those with hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of friends through social network services. As Social Networking Services gradually become popularized, the concept of what a friend is changing with the emergence of facebook friends and twitter friends. In light of Aristotle, then, there is growing number of people with exceedingly large second property. As for their actual wealth, that remains in the dark. Including the well-knit friends in the real life, the mere acquaintances, friends of friends, and even those whose identity you haven t the faintest clue, through the online profiles, are all brought together as friends. Here, the mentor and the mentee, superior and co-workers, celebrity and fans, parents and children and even the husband and wife become friends. A world of equal friendships that is out of this world! It is a World of Friends that is unlike the offline world where she treads. Even her Facebook account registers more than two hundred friends. But in reality, she talks to less than 10% of them. If you look at her friends, three to five hundred friends are the average, and if they re involved in politics, press, law, or education, that number could reach into the thousands. Twitter doesn t have a limit on followers, so Lady Gaga and Obama have millions of followers. However, in Facebook a person can t have more than five thousand friends. It is said that the number of people that a person can contact at least once a year and continue to be acquainted Dunbar s Number - is 150 people. Your friends stories are an assorted gift set! Full of sweet, crisp, salty and even the bitter, some express loneliness, while others express joy. Some people display the joys of graduation and employment, some the photo of their fetus, while others Her Window display their cooking, or the scene of a child s play. Meanwhile, some display the terrible struggle of the laborers and ask for solidarity. Some speak through essays, some through music, some through paintings, and some through photographs. They continuously link not just their thoughts and opinions, but also news, useful information, and other gemlike principles. It s as though they are chanting the words from One Piece, a comic that this youthful generation are enthused with: When do you think people die? When they are shot... No! It s when they are forgotten. Perhaps it s for passing the time, or maybe one of many motions of living. Like Choonsu Kim s poem, Flower! Before I had called out to her/him She/He was but a gesture When I had called out her/his name She/He came to me and became a flower. (Omitted) And to her? To her they are all precious relationships! Through this window she is able to peek into what her friends her children s age are thinking as they live, and at times the new music they post become the occasional refreshment. The global news and the stories of people living in completely different settings that she never would have known are interesting and help to broaden her view. She can find out what her friends on the other side of the world are up to, and even chat across the Pacific in real time to do so. At times she wonders and searches for her long lost friends, but being computer illiterate keeps her at bay. But the friends made through Facebook won t have to deal with that. The age of irrevocably lost friends has ended, and the age of communication has come. But just as nibbling on delicious chocolate can make us forget our appetite, she finds time flying past as she scrolls and skims through various things that her friends have posted. Thinking that being able to communicate like without a word is such a great tool, she clicks away at the likes until she actually finds herself forgetting why she turned the computer on to begin with. Looking at the strewn about pieces of news and thoughts that aren t her own, She discover herself jumping on the bandwagon on their time and living others lives vicariously. Because of this, her friend, declaring that Without solitude, you cannot create, has deactivated her account and has broken up with her computer friends in search for alone time. Indeed, even medicine in large doses can be poison, and fun games in addiction can be life threatening. Then must she now declare a break up with her internet friends as well? Just open the window and the bitter wind blows, crisp snow flurries past, and sweet sunlight illuminates the windowsill. Whether the window is open because of solitude or shut for solitude, however many are open or in whichever direction they are built, the decision is hers to make. Leaving it open for too long on a salty day and catching the cold or whatever beyond the window she looks at as she thinks, is also her decision. Today she chooses to open the window. Because to her, friends are more precious than anything! The statue, a popular place for photos on commencement weekend, will not be back in time this year. CHAMPAIGN The Alma Mater sculpture s problems are more extensive than initial inspections showed and the iconic sculpture will not be back on campus in time for commencement, officials said today. The price tag for the restoration of the 5-ton bronze statue will also triple, to more than $360,000, with the cost covered by alumni funds, officials said. The original cost of the project was $99,962. The 83-year-old campus landmark was removed from its pedestal at the corner of Green and Wright streets in Urbana on Aug. 7 and taken to the Conservation of Sculpture and Objects Studio in Forest Park, to repair years of water damage and corrosion that affected its appearance and structural integrity. Once experts were able closely to inspect the interior of the 13-foot tall sculpture by UI alumnus and artist Lorado Taft, they found the 30 sections that make up the sculpture had oxidized and corroded. The interior of each piece will be cleaned, repaired and treated in the same way as the exterior. Lasers are being used to remove the oxidation, returning it to its original bronze color, and then the metal will be sealed with a wax compound, which will be reapplied periodically. It is now expected to return to campus during the 2013-14 academic year. The sculpture is often the centerpiece of photo opportunities for graduates, friends and families at commencement, which is on May 12 this year. The university s art and design department is working to create several replicas of the sculpture that will be placed around campus for alternative photo opportunities, said Robin Kaler, the associate chancellor for public affairs. Each replica will have a little different personality, she said in a release. We ll post a map of the locations on the commencement website so students can easily find them and get pictures with one or all of them. She said there also are plans to place orange and blue bunting in front of Foellinger Auditorium and to add landscaping at the Hallene Gateway to provide graduation photo opportunities in the absence of the Alma Mater statue. URBANA Students applying to the University of Illinois flagship campus next year will be able to fill out a new online application, but it won t be part of the growing Common Application Consortium. The university has decided against using the Common App, as it s known, for the Urbana-Champaign and Springfield campuses for the next few years, though the Chicago campus adopted it last year. The Urbana-Champaign campus
p5 cuasiantimes.com MARCH, 2013 Champaign-Urbana will develop a new version of its online application in-house instead and hopes to have it ready by fall, when students begin applying for admission in fall 2014. The Common App allows students to apply to many colleges through one central application and is seen as a way to expand a college s reach nationwide. But its requirements differ from the UI s and would create more paperwork and require more staff, UI officials say. A university committee that evaluated the Common App concluded that any potential benefits would be offset by the cost estimated at more than $500,000 a year and could disrupt the UI s own recruitment process. The move was also opposed by a majority of counselors at UI feeder high schools in suburban Chicago, some of whom wrote to then-ui President Michael Hogan last year to argue against the idea. Hogan had pushed the Common App as part of a sweeping proposal to revamp how the university manages admissions and enrollment. Down the line, it may be to our advantage to do it. Right now, the disadvantages seem to outweigh the advantages and the relative strength of the programs we already have in place, said Richard Wheeler, visiting associate vice president for academic affairs, who headed the UI Common App Consortium Assessment Committee. The Common Application Consortium was founded 35 years ago by a group of private schools and has since expanded to include more than 450 colleges and universities nationwide and in western Europe. Schools pay an annual fee of $4 per application. Public universities were invited in 2000 and more than 50 have joined, including Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State, North Carolina and Virginia. This year, 750,000 students are expected to submit more than 3 million applications through the Common App. A 2011 report on enrollment management at the UI, commissioned by Hogan, recommended that the university move to the Common App. Faculty balked at that proposal and others, fearing a loss of autonomy for the Urbana campus, and a revised report later recommended further study. The UI Chicago adopted the Common App for students applying for fall 2013. But a report last summer from the Office of Admissions at Urbana recommended against it. The campus wants to develop a new online application because the existing version developed under the Banner computer system is outdated and often unreliable, with frequent outages for maintenance and upgrades, the report said. The Common App has advantages, the report said, with Michigan and other schools seeing a jump of 25 percent in applicants the first year (though the increase tapered off in subsequent years). But those potential gains would be offset by staffing increases of $495,000 to $527,000 to handle additional paperwork; a strain in relations with the UI s feeder high schools; and a loss of valuable data now gleaned from the UI s Self Reported Academic Record, a list of high school courses and grades that applicants fill out online instead of supplying an official transcript. The UI requires transcripts only for students already admitted, roughly 7,000 annually, whereas the Common App would require it of all 31,000 applicants. Gathering those transcripts is a labor-intensive process, as they re submitted in a variety of paper and electronic formats, Wheeler said. The Self-Reported Academic Record cut application processing time by 75 percent, allowing the admissions office to automate calculations of GPA and Advanced Placement credits earned, for example. But the SRAR is not an option under the Common App, and we will need to revert back to manual labor to do those calculations, the report said. Three-quarters of the schools in the Common App also require a supplement to the application an additional two to five pages of questions specific to the institution that the UI would have to develop. And the Common App requires letters of recommendation from high school counselors, which the UI does not currently accept. Additional staff would be needed to review the transcripts, supplements and letters of recommendation a substantial spike in our intake of paperwork, the report said. The letters of recommendation would also create a significant burden on high school counselors, Wheeler said. In 2011-12, 51 Illinois high schools had more than 100 applicants to the UI, the report said. A new online application developed in-house would be much cheaper about $50,000 annually and would allow the UI to tailor the design to its own recruitment needs, the report said. Wheeler said the panel will re-evaluate the Common App in three to five years. Most of the UI s academic peers still don t use it, but Purdue plans to join in the coming year, and Indiana and Wisconsin are thought to be considering it. We feel good about keeping our current processes in place, but at the same time, what s most important to us is doing what s best for the campus and our constituents, said Stacey Kostell, director of admissions at Urbana. Newly admitted students touring the campus Monday said the Common App wasn t a factor in their decision to apply to the UI. Jack Cordes of Lincolnshire said it might make a difference to out-of-state students, but most students at Stevenson High School would apply to the UI regardless. He also applied to Common App schools, including Harvard, North Carolina, Cornell and Boston University. I was always going to apply to the U of I. There s plenty of schools that don t use it, he added, including Oklahoma, Washington and Wisconsin, where he also applied. CU column Why travel on Spring break? I have set up many goals this semester, such as saving money, finding a job or internship after graduation and expanding my network. Some start planning Spring break traveling as early as in winter vacation. In order to save money, I thought I was to stay on campus and do intensive job search and apply to millions of jobs and internships. This will at least save me a few hundred dollars. But last month, my friends invited me to visit Washington D.C. with them. I hesitated. I always love traveling. I see it as a learning opportunity. As an international student here, I want to see more of the American culture. I went on a road trip last year with a friend in Utah and Arizona, driving between mountains and by the creeks. The nature had taught me a lot and somehow inspired me to try different things while young. On the way from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Page, Arizona, we ran into a snowstorm. Three hours of driving in the snow with extremely low visit ability was actually tiring. But now I am a much better driver. Washington D.C. is one of the most important cities in this country. It has so many museums and memorial parks. All of them are very educational. During late March, Washington D.C is also known for its National Cherry Blossom Festival. This traditional festival, started from 1912 when Japan gave 600 trees to the United States, is a celebration of spring s arrival. I hesitated because traveling isn t cheap. One of my goals this semester is to save money. It s already difficult to save money in college. Every month, I pay rent, utility and grocery. This semester, I eliminated clothes and accessory shopping. I avoid the mall and notification emails. I have been good so far. I rather spend that much of money on food that will give me a healthier lifestyle. Yet, I realize I have enough clothes for a while. I don t need more. I wasn t sure if I had a budget to travel. This trip is different because one of my friends is from Washington D.C, and we will stay with his family in the city, which saves the accommodation cost. That s about three hundred dollars already. This is very kind of him and his family. For college students, if you have friends from other cities, why not have your friend be a guide for you. It s actually fun to travel with friends. It s a different kind of fun than traveling alone. America is known as a big melting pot. I believe Washington D.C. is one of the major melting pots that full of different culture and interesting stories. As a journalism student, I am always curious to learn about other people and their culture. Some people indeed want to share their lifetime lessons and stories. Why not? You never know whom you will end up meeting or even becoming friends with. Wildly thinking, I may even meet Obama there. Who knows? After a few days, I called my friends and told them I would MARCH, 2013 love to join them on Spring break in Washington D.C. Not only will I be in a warmer city but also will meet different people and learn more. Why not travel on my last Spring break and have fun and learn at the same time? I am game. Jiayun Chen/Reporter Perks of a Videogame One of the things that I really love to a point of being consumed by it at times is playing video games. I spend a lot of time not just playing it, but observing the little things that differentiate certain games from the mediocre and make them great, the stories that make the franchise a success, or the elements of the game that make it intricate and deep. At times, there are some details that are just hilarious which only feeds the quest to find these Easter eggs and appropriate hilarity. However, I find that all too often videogames fail to be the redeeming experience I seek one that breaks free from the rigid and limiting structure that is all too familiar of a platform with a barely tweaked story. I feel like that the mainstream gaming industry is failing to come up with something new and original, and instead continues to develop essentially the same game with better graphics and different story arcs. While utilizing these technical advances can provide more exciting and realistic experience, the message they send are often simplistic, and certainly not thought provoking. Some games have managed to break away from the limits of its genre by redefining its elements, while some like Assassin s Creed have incorporated concepts like time travel that have been neglected, and combined it together with an amazing story that turned into something completely unique. But there are strides that haven t been made yet; videogames are all too frequently perceived only as an entertainment media, and the possibilities of other identities such as being artistic or educational/informative are often so drastically pure in their approach that they fail to hit the mainstream target or even be counted as entertainment. I want there to be something that bridges these gaps; I want a videogame that is not only a blast to play, but you experience something that doesn t just throw information in your face it internalizes in you in ways that become meaningful and relevant. What the industry needs is a type of motivation to break out and think outside the box. Videogame is unique from other forms of media in that it allows its audience to directly interact with the environment that is provided to them this is an unprecedented opportunity to engage people with important messages in ways that is not possible through reading or watching movies. But today this type of interactivity is essentially limited by the videogame industry itself, which follows simple formulas and sequels to hits that keeps on pumping repetitive gameplay, and lacks in application of human ingenuity that creates empathy in other entertainment forms. It is an irrefutable fact that videogame has a lot of potential to become something that is groundbreaking. It offers a unique experience that can be engaging, and depending on the message portrayed by this experience, the player or the audience could actually learn something that isn t something like Call of Duty where we have successfully taught elementary school children how to utilize your mom jokes and insult people in the most p6 cuasiantimes.com demeaning way. What needs to happen now is make the journey to cross the bridge, from mere entertainment, to something more. Jung-In Kim/Reporter KEY LIME PIE Ingredients: 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 4 egg yolks, 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, 1 egg white, stiffly beaten whipping cream or meringue for topping Direction: 1. Bake a store bought or homemade pie crust and allow to cool for 30 minutes. 2. Combine milk, egg yolks and lime juice. Beat egg white until peaks form when the beater is lifted from the bowl. Pour mixture into cooled pie crust and refrigerate. 3. Before serving, beat 1 cup of whipping cream with a few tablespoons of powdered sugar or corn syrup and use a spatula to evenly cover the pie. You can add a few drops of lime oil to the cream if available. 4. Or top the pie with meringue by beating the 3 remaining egg whites; gradually add 6 tbsp. sugar and 1/4 tsp cream of tartar. Pipe or smooth the meringue over the pie filling and bake for 20-25 minutes in a preheated 350 F oven or until the top of the meringue has browned lightly. 5. Standard limes can be used, but we like to use Key Limes whenever they are available.
