1 About this style guide This style guide is intended for the localization professional working on localized products that run on a Microsoft platform. It s not intended to be a comprehensive coverage of all localization practices, but to highlight areas where Microsoft has specific preferences or deviates from standard practices for Korean localization. The primary goal of this guide is to help you understand and learn how to address all of the necessary linguistic and stylistic nuances of Korean during the localization of your products and services. The style guide covers guidelines and recommendations for translating the Microsoft voice into Korean including words, grammatical structures, the needs of the audience, and the intent of the text that are to be considered. Each of these areas is supplemented with samples. Other language considerations covered in this style guide are accessibility, trademarks, geopolitical concerns and specific software considerations. We welcome your feedback, questions and concerns regarding the style guide. Please send your feedback via Microsoft Language Portal. 1.1 Recommended style references Unless this style guide or the Microsoft Language Portal provides alternative instructions, use the orthography, grammar, and terminology in the following publications: Normative references When more than one solution is possible, consult the other topics in this style guide for guidance. 1. The Standard Dictionary of Korean Language ( 표준국어대사전 ), published by The National Institute of Korean Language. Microsoft User interface reference A helpful reference is the Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 4 of 45

2 Microsoft voice Microsoft s brand personality comes through in our voice and tone what we say and how we say it. The design of Microsoft products, services, and experiences hinges on crisp simplicity. Three principles form the foundation of our voice: Warm and relaxed: We re natural. Less formal, more grounded in honest conversations. Occasionally, we re fun. (We know when to celebrate.) Crisp and clear: We re to the point. We write for scanning first, reading second. We make it simple above all. Ready to lend a hand: We show customers we re on their side. We anticipate their real needs and offer great information at just the right time. The Microsoft voice targets a broad set of users from technology enthusiasts and casual computer users. Although content might be different for different audiences, the principles of Microsoft voice are the same. However, Microsoft voice also means keeping the audience in mind. Choose the right words for the audience: use technical terms for technical audiences, but for consumers use common words and phrases instead. These key elements of Microsoft voice should extend across Microsoft content for all language locales. For each language, the specific choices in style and tone that produce Microsoft voice are different. The following guidelines are relevant for US English as well as many other languages. Guidelines Keep the following guidelines in mind: Write short, easy-to-read sentences. Avoid passive voice it s difficult to read and understand quickly. Examples: Don t Do 해집니다. 시킵니다합니다. 되어집니다. 됩니다. 불리는 부르는, 말하는, 하는 Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 5 of 45

Be pleasant and ensure that explanations appear individualized. Avoid slang and be careful with colloquialisms it s acceptable to reassure and connect with customers in a conversational tone, but be professional in doing so. 2.1 Choices that reflect Microsoft voice Translating Korean in a way that reflects Microsoft voice means choosing words and grammatical structures that reflect the same style as the source text. It also means considering the needs of the audience and the intent of the text. The general style should be clear, friendly and concise. Use language that resembles conversation observed in everyday settings as opposed to the formal, technical language that s often used for technical and commercial content. When you re localizing source text written in Microsoft voice, feel free to choose words that aren t standard translations if you think that s the best way to stay true to the intent of the source text. Because Microsoft voice means a more conversational style, literally translating the source text may produce target text that s not relevant to customers. To guide your translation, consider the intent of the text and what the customer needs to know to successfully complete the task. 2.1.1 Flexibility It s important for translators to modify or rewrite translated strings so that they are more appropriate and natural to Korean customers. Try to understand the whole intention of the sentences, paragraphs, and pages, and then rewrite as if you are writing the content yourself. It will make the content more perfect for Korean users. Sometimes, you may need to remove any unnecessary content. English example More beautiful, more flexible, more you. And very, very fast. The desktop that you're used to with its taskbar, folders, and icons is still here and better than ever, with a new taskbar and streamlined file management. These lightweight PCs have fantastic battery life, and are a great option for doing stuff on the go. 더멋지고더유연하게. Korean example 놀라운속도를자랑하는나만의 Windows. 작업표시줄, 폴더, 아이콘등이전에사용하던데스크톱환경을그대로계승하고더욱발전시켜새로운작업표시줄과최적화된파일관리기능을제공합니다. 이가벼운 PC 는매우뛰어난배터리수명을자랑하며이동중에도여러가지작업을할수있도록만들어줍니다. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 6 of 45

2.1.2 Word choice Terminology Use terminology from the Microsoft Language Portal where applicable, for example key terms, technical terms, and product names. Product names are normally not translated. Feature names can usually be translated. In any case, it s extremely important to always confirm localizability of any such items with the project team. Examples: en-us source Incorrect translation Correct translation accessibility 내게필요한옵션접근성 homepage 홈페이지홈페이지 trusted connection 트러스트된연결신뢰할수있는연결 Note: However, be careful when using Microsoft Language Portal as reference for general marketing content. As a general rule, you re not obliged to strictly follow the official Microsoft glossary translations of terms other than UI and SW references, especially avoid the unpopular or outdated terms. Don t use mechanical 1:1 translation, instead use terminology which is commonly-used in everyday life, but don t use slang. Short word forms and everyday words Microsoft voice text written in US English prefers short, simple words spoken in everyday conversations. In English, shorter words are friendlier and less formal. Short words also save space on screen and are easier to read quickly. Precise, well-chosen words add clarity, but it s important to be intentional about using everyday words that customers are accustomed to. The following table lists some common words that are used for Microsoft voice in US English. en-us word App Pick, choose Drive en-us word usage Use app instead of application or program. Use pick in more fun, less formal or lightweight situations ("pick a color," not "choose a color") and choose for more formal situations (don t use select unless necessary for the UI). For general reference to any drive type (hard drive, CD drive, external hard drive, etc.). Use specific drive type if necessary. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 7 of 45

Get Info PC You Fine to use as a synonym for "obtain" or "come into possession of" but avoid for other general meanings. Use in most situations unless information better fits the context. Use info when you point the reader elsewhere ("for more info, see <link>"). Use for personal computing devices. Use computer for situations about PCs and Macs. Don t switch between PC and computer. Address the user as you, directly or indirectly through the use of first- and second-person pronouns like "you." Avoid third-person references, such as "user," as they sound formal and impersonal. For information on localizing you, see the section Pronouns. 영문표현에따라번역하십시오. 어색하거나친숙하지않은표현은자연스러운우리말표현으로바꾸고일상생활에서사용하는용어나문구를사용해야합니다. en-us source term Korean word E-mail address Online store Home page 메일주소 온라인스토어 홈페이지 2.1.3 Word-to-word translation For a more fluent translation, avoid word-to-word translation. If words are translated directly without overall understanding of the paragraph or the page, the content will not be natural and may even appear ridiculous, and our customers will not come again. Strict word-to-word translation makes the tone stiff and unnatural. Split the text into different sentences, if necessary, to simplify. Omit descriptors to make the text snappier. English text Correct Korean translation Incorrect Korean translation Your life, connected through the cloud Whether you're at work or at play, you can take your friends, files, and favorite sites with you. 2.1.4 Words and phrases to avoid Microsoft voice avoids an unnecessarily formal tone. The following table lists US English words that add formality without adding meaning, along with more common equivalents. en-us word/phrase to avoid Preferred en-us word/phrase Achieve As well as Attempt Configure Encounter Execute Halt Have an opportunity However Give/provide guidance, give/provide information In addition In conjunction with Locate Make a recommendation Modify Navigate Obtain Perform Purchase Do Also, too Try Set up Meet Run Stop Can But Help Also With Find Recommend Change Go Get Do Buy Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 9 of 45

This can be done in the following ways: List of common abbreviations: Korean words don t generally use abbreviations but when dealing with English abbreviations, the following general rules are applied: Use of abbreviation is based on English source text. Abbreviation should not contain a space. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 14 of 45

Use a nonbreaking space (Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar) in any abbreviation to avoid having one letter move to the beginning of the next line. Abbreviation of company names and product names follow the notation rule of each corresponding company and product. English abbreviation of months and days of the week are as follows. Month: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec Days of the week: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun In Korean, we only use abbreviations for days of the week but not for months. Examples: 월, 화, 수, 목, 금, 토, 일 Don t abbreviate these words: Don t abbreviate Microsoft as MS when Microsoft is a part of product names. Don t abbreviate Internet Explorer as IE. Don t abbreviate Visual Studio as VS in product names. Don t abbreviate operating system names. Examples: Error example Correct example Win Server 2016 Windows Server 2016 Vista Windows Vista 3.1.2 Acronyms Acronyms are words made up of the initial letters of major parts of a compound term. Common examples are WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), DNS (Domain Name Server), and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Korean words don t generally use acronyms but when dealing with English acronyms, the following general rules are applied: Regardless of English format of acronyms, Korean translation should follow the format of "English acronym (English full spelling or Korean full spelling)." Important: This rule does not apply to product names. Example: Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 15 of 45

English text Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Translation text Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) If an acronym is used in title, don t write the full spelling of the acronym. Acronym letters should be all uppercased even though English uses small letters. Example: Vpn quarantine -> VPN 격리 If "s" is added at the end of English acronym, meaning plural, "s" should be dropped when localizing into Korean. Examples: English text Error example Correction several IFSs 몇몇 IFSs 몇몇 IFS three OEMs OEMs 세개세 OEM Localized acronyms When Korean full spelling for the corresponding English acronym is commonly used in Korean, translate the acronym in the form of English acronym (Korean full spelling). When translating acronyms, refer to Microsoft standard glossary or relevant web sites for correct Korean translation. English acronym should always come first, followed by Korean translation in parentheses. Examples: Source text Korean text USB (Universal Serial Bus) USB( 범용직렬버스 ) (IIS) Internet Information Services IIS( 인터넷정보서비스 ) distinguished name (DN) DN( 고유이름 ) double-byte character set (DBCS) DBCS( 더블바이트문자집합 ) Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 16 of 45

Unlocalized acronyms English acronym (English full spelling) When Korean full spelling for the corresponding English acronym is not commonly used in Korean, translate the acronym in the form of English acronym (English full spelling). The English acronym should always come first, followed by its full spelling in parentheses, regardless of English usage of the acronym. Examples: Source text Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Open Database Connectivity Report Definition Language (RDL) Extensible Firmware Interface Korean text MMC (Microsoft Management Console) ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) RDL (Report Definition Language) EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) 3.1.3 Capitalization In Korean, we don t have capitalization and capitalization only applies when English texts such as product names or abbreviations are used as they are. For more information, refer to Abbreviations and Applications, Products, and Features sections. 3.1.4 Compounds Compounds should be understandable and clear to the user. Avoid overly long or complex compounds. Keep in mind that unintuitive compounds can cause intelligibility and usability issues. When you use compound words, space is an important issue in Korean. Generally, there should be no space between two words if they represent the meaning of compound words. Examples: 구름다리 (O), 구름다리 (X) 질그릇 (O), 질그릇 (X) 돌다리 (O), 돌다리 (X) 손가방 (O), 손가방 (X) 솜사탕 (O), 솜사탕 (X) Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 17 of 45

대한민국 (O), 대한민국 (X) 높푸르다 (O), 높푸르다 (X) 오가다 (O), 오가다 (X) Notes: Sometimes the meaning of compound words can be totally different depending on a space. For example, " 작은아버지 " means "a father with short height" but " 작은아버지 " means "younger brothers of a father." 3.1.5 Font localization All Microsoft products use specific fonts to indicate UIs and contents. The default font for English texts is Segoe UI, 10pt and italic or bold fonts are often applied to emphasize UI texts. The default font for Korean texts is 맑은고딕, 9pt. Bold font can be applied same as English but italic font is recommended to remove for better readability. Please refer to the following table for more information. Category English Korean Font Type for Software Segoe UI Malgun Gothic ( 맑은고딕 ) Font Family for Web products Segoe UI, Tahoma, Verdana Malgun Gothic, Gulim, Tahoma, Verdana Font Size 10 9 Style - Italic Italic Normal Style - Bold Bold Bold Handling UI terms in bold/italic/quotation style In UI content when localizing UI terms in software (User interface) strings, enclose UI terms with square brackets ([ ]). If the source uses double quotation marks, though, please apply the same style in the target (unless otherwise flagged by Microsoft as an exception). In UE content as for UI terms in documentation and online help (User Assistance/Education), follow the same formatting as the English text. That is, if bold font is used in English UI terms in documentation, apply the same bold font to Korean Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 18 of 45

UI terms. Bold font can be applied same as English but Italic font is recommended to remove for better readability. Examples: * Software - UI translation Please use square brackets [ ] for UI terms in general. If the source uses double quotes, though, the same double quotes are to be used when no technical issues are expected. Note: When program names or the word "Control Panel" appear in English text, those terms should be enclosed with square brackets ([ ]) only when they are used as a command to run. Example: Internet Explorer 를실행하려면 [ 시작 ] 메뉴의 [ 모든프로그램 ] 을클릭하고 [Internet Explorer] 를클릭하십시오. * Online help/manual/document - UA/UE translation Please apply the same source style in the target as in the source. However, italic font (for Korean UI term, if any) is recommended to be removed by moving the UI term out of the tag pair, and to be replaced by the appropriate alternative used for other UI terms in the same project, e.g., square brackets, bold or double quotation marks. Type English Source Korean (Correct) Notes Example of the use of square brackets ( 대괄호 ) for UIs in UI translation. (Exception: For web-run files like Asp and Js, UI terms can remain in Bold tags. Notes: 1. In some products, legacy Gulim ( 굴림 ) font is preferred. 2. For web-based products, font is defined using CSS (Cascade Style Sheets). Several fonts are grouped together as a font family so they can be used to display contents based on user s computing environment. During localization process, change only Segoe UI into Malgun Gothic and Gulim for users without 'Malgun Gothic' font in their computers but leave the other fonts as they are. 3. In newly released products, new style such as English Semibold or Light began to be applied additionally. Asian language fonts including Malgun Gothic do not have such style. 3.1.6 Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors The Microsoft voice allows for the use of culture-centric colloquialisms, idioms and metaphors (collectively referred to "colloquialism"). 영문모던보이스의특성은영미문화권에특화된구어체, 관용적표현, 은유법을사용하여표현합니다. 모던보이스에서는영미문화권에특화된구어체, 관용적표현, 은유법 ( 통칭하여 " 구어체 ") 을사용할수있습니다. Choose from these options to express the intent of the source text appropriately in Korean: Don t literally replace the source colloquialism with a Korean colloquialism because it could sound rude or impolite to end-users. In such cases, just translate the intended meaning of the colloquialism in the source text (as opposed to translating literally the actual colloquialism in the source text). Try to rephrase the sentence if it has colloquialism which can t be translated as it s. Make sure to use everyday words/expressions and conversational expressions rather than using classic tone and voice. 다음중한가지방식으로영문의미를적절하게번역하십시오. 직역하면사용자에게무례하고공손하지않은번역이되는경우영문에사용된구어체를그대로옮기면안됩니다. 단, 어떠한경우에도영문에서의도한의미는훼손하면안됩니다. 구어체가강한표현이포함되어있을경우, 최대한의미에맞게문장을재구성해주십시오. 단, 일상생활에서사용할것같은자연스러운용어및표현을사용해야합니다. "more effective troubleshooting" is translated as a meaning of "to troubleshoot more effectively," which is more fluent translation. 3.1.8 Nouns In Korean, no specific considerations are given to nouns since we don t have noun inflection and also don t distinguish singular/plural formation. We sometimes add a suffix " 들 " to the end of nouns to indicate plural meaning, but it s frequently omitted without affecting overall meaning and also grammatically accepted. 3.1.9 Pronouns In Korean, pronouns are seldom used in localized text since they decrease readability. The translations of pronouns are often omitted if the meaning of source text can be clearly delivered without translating them. Sometimes pronouns should be translated specifically to clarify what they mean based on the context. Examples: English text Korean text Comment To use this card, you will have to use a smart card or a certificate. 이카드를사용하려면스마트카드또는인증서를사용해야합니다. Translation of "my" is omitted for better readability without affecting overall meaning. Translation of "my" is not omitted for clear meaning. 3.1.10 Punctuation In English, colons or semicolons are often used at the end of the sentence. However, in Korean, period should be used when the localized sentence ends with verbs such as "~ 하세요 " or "~ 합니다 " style, regardless of what punctuation is used in English sentence. However, using different punctuation from English source can cause functional problems in software localization. In this case, consult with the Microsoft Product Group to prevent possible problems. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 24 of 45

3.1.11 Sentence fragments For en-us Microsoft voice, use of sentence fragments help convey a conversational tone. They are used when possible, and are short and to the point. en-us long form Use the following steps. Examples: English text Korean text Comment An error occurred while trying to create the database. 데이터베이스를만드는동안오류가발생했습니다. This sentence can be rephrased to "An error occurred while creating the database." Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 25 of 45

Continuous operations are usually expressed in English with a gerund, which should be translated into Korean as a form of "~ 하고있습니다 " or "~ 하는중." A gerund is often used in title sentence in English so it s important to distinguish whether a gerund expresses a continuous operation or not. Examples: English text Korean text Comment Saving text file Now saving temporary file. Completing installation Completing the New Connection Wizard 텍스트파일을저장하는중 임시파일을저장하고있습니다. 설치완료중 새연결마법사완료 Gerund expresses a continuous operation. Gerund expresses a continuous operation. 4 Localization considerations Localization means that the translated text needs to be adapted to the local language, customs and standards. General considerations The language in Microsoft products should have the "look and feel" of a product originally written in Korean, using idiomatic syntax and terminology, while at the same time maintaining a high level of terminological consistency, so as to guarantee the maximum user experience and usability for our customers. 4.1 Applications, products, and features Product and application names are often trademarked or may be trademarked in the future and are therefore rarely translated. Occasionally, feature names are trademarked, too (for example, IntelliSense ). Before translating any application, product, or feature name, verify that it s in fact translatable and not protected in any way. This information can to be obtained here. General guidelines Product names In general, product names are used same as English without localizing. If you need to check if any product name should be localized or not, consult with the Microsoft Product Group. General rules on how to handle product names are as follows: Use product names same as English. Don t abbreviate Microsoft as MS in product names. Don t abbreviate Internet Explorer as IE. Don t abbreviate Visual Studio as VS in product names. When operating system names and product names are used together, don t abbreviate operating system names. Examples: Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 27 of 45

English text Correct translation Wrong translation XYZ for the Windows Vista system Windows Server based applications Windows Vista 용 XYZ Windows Server 용응용프로그램 Windows Server 기반응용프로그램 Windows Vista XYZ Windows Server 응용프로그램 Some confused examples: Sometimes product names can be confused with general component names. Microsoft Transaction Server, Microsoft Message Queue vs transaction server, message queue "Microsoft Transaction Server," "Microsoft Message Queue" and "Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator" are product names so they should be left in English. During localization process, you may encounter "transaction server ( 트랜잭션서버 )," "message queue ( 메시지큐 )," personal web server ( 개인웹서버 ), which are not specific product names but just general component names so they should be translated. You can distinguish them whether "Microsoft" is preceded or not, or sometimes based on the context. Applets or built-in component names Product names are also often confused with applets or built-in component names. For example, "Microsoft Notepad (Microsoft 메모장 )" is not a separate product but one of the built-in components in Windows. So it can be localized. Another example is "MSMQ Information Store." You can regard "MSMQ Information Store" as one of the components of "MSMQ," so it can be translated into "MSMQ 정보저장소." Notes: There are some cases where product names are translated or transliterated in unavoidable circumstances. Such examples are packages, marketing materials and press releases. In such cases, follow the correct notation rule of foreign words. 4.2 Trademarks Trademarked names and the name Microsoft Corporation shouldn t be localized unless local laws require translation and an approved translated form of the trademark is available. A list of Microsoft trademarks is here. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 28 of 45

4.3 Geopolitical concerns Part of the cultural adaptation of the US-product to a specific market is the resolution of geopolitical issues. While the US-product is designed and developed with neutrality and a global audience in mind, the localized product should respond to the particular situation that applies within the target country/region. Sensitive issues or issues that might potentially be offensive to the users in the target country/region may occur in any of the following: Maps Flags Country/region, city and language names Art and graphics Cultural content, such as encyclopedia content and other text where historical or political references are present Some issues are easy to verify and resolve. The localizer should have the most current information available. Maps and other graphical representations of countries/regions should be checked for accuracy and existing political restrictions. Country/region, city, and language names change on a regular basis and should be checked, even if previously approved. A thorough understanding of the culture of the target market is required for checking the appropriateness of cultural content, clip art and other visual representations of religious symbols, and body and hand gestures. 4.4 Software considerations This section refers to all menus, menu items, commands, buttons, check boxes, and other UI elements that should be consistently translated in the localized product. 4.4.1 Error messages Here is an example: Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 29 of 45

Error messages are messages sent by the system or a program, informing the user of an error that must be corrected in order for the program to keep running. The messages can prompt the user to take action or inform the user of an error that requires restarting the computer. Considering the underlying principles of Microsoft voice, translators are encouraged to apply them to ensure target translation is more natural, empathetic and not robot-like. Korean style in error messages Use consistent terminology and language style in the localized error messages, and not just translate them as they appear in the US product. English error messages tend to be shorter and sometimes "be" verb is omitted, but in Korean, fully developed form of translation is preferred. Error message is generally translated into "~ 니다 " style, in which case, a period should be placed at the end of the Korean text even if English sentence ends with different punctuation such as a colon. However, if English text is not a full sentence but a phrase, or ends with a colon + placeholder, you can translate them accordingly as follows. Examples: English text Korean text Comment Specified proxy address ""{0}"" is invalid: {1} To install the prerequisites, choose one of the following: 지정한프록시주소 ""{0}"" 이 ( 가 ) 잘못되었습니다. {1} 필수구성요소를설치하려면다음중하나를선택하세요. Though English sentence ends with a colon, Korean sentence ends with a period since it s translated with "~ 합니다 " style. Though English sentence ends with a colon, Korean sentence ends with a period since it s translated with "~ 하세요 " style. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 30 of 45

English text Korean text Comment Error Accessing URL Address Error attempting to read from the source install database: [2] Not enough memory. Continue without Undo? URL 주소에액세스하는동안오류발생 원본설치데이터베이스를읽는동안오류발생 : [2] 메모리가부족합니다. 취소하지않고계속하시겠습니까? English sentence is not a full sentence and ends without any punctuation such as colon or period, in which case, Korean sentence can end with an abbreviated form and without a period. If English sentence ends with a colon followed by a placeholder, use the same style in Korean text as English. Though English sentence is an abbreviated form, fully developed translation is required. Standard phrases in error messages These phrases commonly occur in error messages. When you translate them, try to use the provided target phrases. However, feel free to use other ways to express the source meaning if they work better in the context. When translating usual phrases, standardize. Note that sometimes the US uses different forms to express the same thing. However, it s recommended to use consistent translation style in localized version. Examples: English Translation Example Comment Can t Could not ~ 할수없습니다. 파일을복사할수없습니다. It s not necessary to translate "could not" into past tense. Failed to Failure of ~ 하지못했습니다. 파일을복사하지못했습니다. If "failure" is used as a noun, it can be translated into " 오류 " or " 실패," depending on the context. Can t find Could not find ~ 찾을수없습니다. 파일을찾을수없습니다. Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 31 of 45

Unable to find Unable to locate English Translation Example Comment Not enough memory Insufficient memory There is not enough memory There is not enough memory available 메모리가부족합니다. 파일을저장하는데필요한메모리가부족합니다.... is not available... is unavailable ~ ( 사용 ) 할수없습니다. 원본파일을사용할수없습니다. Translation can vary according to the context. For example, "Internet access is not available" can be translated into " 인터넷에액세스할수없습니다." An error occurred while An error occurred when Error while Error when ~ 하는동안오류가발생했습니다. 파일을만드는동안오류가발생했습니다. It s recommended to translate these kinds of messages into "~ 하는동안 " instead of "~ 하는중." Error messages containing placeholders When localizing error messages containing placeholders, try to anticipate what will replace the placeholder. This is necessary for the sentence to be grammatically correct when the placeholder is replaced with a word or phrase. Note that the letters used in placeholders convey a specific meaning. Examples: %d, %ld, %u, and %lu means <number> %c means <letter> %s means <string> Examples of error messages containing placeholders: "Checking Web %1!d! of %2!d!" means "Checking Web <number> of <number>." "INI file "%1!-.200s!" section" means "INI file "<string>" section." Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 32 of 45

Order of placeholders If placeholders contain numbers such as the above (%1, %2), the order of the placeholders can be changed regardless of their order in English text. However, if the same placeholders without numbers are used in English, the order of placeholders should not be changed. Examples: English text Korean text Comment Setup run at %1 on %2. Setup run at %s on %s Step %d of %d %2 의 %1 에서설치프로그램이실행됩니다. %s( 위치 : %s) 에서설치프로그램이실행됩니다. %d 단계 / 전체 %d 단계 "%2" can be placed before "%1" in translation sentence. The order of placeholders can be changed differently from the source text since the placeholders contain numbers. Two "%s" placeholders with no numbers are in English sentence. In this case, the order of placeholders can t be changed. You may need to use parentheses to translate the English sentence properly. "%d of %d" can be translated properly using slash (/). Page %d of %d %d/%d 페이지 "%d of %d" can be translated properly using slash (/). Proper usage of measurement unit after placeholders After %d placeholder, proper measurement unit may be needed based on the context. Examples: English text Korean text Comment The string %s must be at least %d character(s) long. %d document(s) pending for %s You have %d days remaining before you must purchase a product license. %s 문자열은 %d 자이상이어야합니다 %d 개의문서가 %s 에대해대기중입니다. %d 일후에는제품라이선스를구입해야합니다. "%d" represents a number so proper measurement unit (in this case, " 자 " meaning "character") is followed without a space. Since "%d" represents a number, you need to add proper measurement unit (in this case, " 개 " meaning "number") after "%d." The measurement unit of 일 meaning "day" is added after "%d." Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 33 of 45

English text Korean text Comment A required keyword was not found near line %d. %d 줄근처에서필요한키워드를찾을수없습니다. "Line %d" is translated into "%d 줄 " meaning "line" instead of " 줄 %d" for better readability. Sometimes the word order may be changed. Proper usage of postpositions after placeholders When localizing error messages containing placeholders, proper use of postposition is very important. Since you don t know what words will replace placeholders, double placeholders should be used, for example, 은 ( 는 ), 이 ( 가 ), 을 ( 를 ), 과 ( 와 ), ( 으 ) 로. Examples: English text Korean text Comment Unable to find the specified group "%1!s!" {0} must have the same user count as {1}. An error occurred while moving the FSS data directory from {0} to {1}. {0} is already being used. Please verify your entry and try again. The certificate issued by %1!s! will be permanently deleted. Do you want to continue? 을 ( 를 ) is used after the placeholder. 과 ( 와 ) is used after the placeholder. ( 으 ) 로 is used after the placeholder. 은 ( 는 ) is used after the placeholder. 이 ( 가 ) is used after the placeholder. 4.4.2 Keys The keyboard is the primary input device used for text input in Microsoft Windows. For accessibility and efficiency, most actions can be performed using the keyboard as well. While working with Microsoft software, you use keys, key combinations and key sequences. In English, references to key names, like arrow keys, function keys and numeric keys, appear in normal text (not in small caps). General guidelines on how to deal with key names in Korean text: When translating key names, the word " 키 " should be added after key names and a space is inserted between the key name and the word " 키." Microsoft Korean Style Guide Page 34 of 45

In case of key combinations, don t add " 키 " after key names. In software strings, for example in EDB files, surround the key names or key combinations with angle brackets (< >). In documentation translation including manuals and online help, don t use angle brackets for key names. Only initial letters of the key names are uppercased. (Examples: Shift 키, Ctrl 키, Alt 키, Esc 키 ). Examples: English text Software translation Documentation translation Comment Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate this control. 스페이스바또는 <Enter> 키를눌러이컨트롤을활성화하세요. 스페이스바또는 Enter 키를눌러이컨트롤을활성화하세요.
