INTRODUCTION of an Individual Korean SOLT I There are many different ways of describing one s physical traits. Pay close attention to the use of the verbs 이다 (to be) and 가지다 (to have). In English, we use possessive adjectives. 그녀의눈은갈색이다 = Her eyes are brown. 그녀는갈색눈을가지고있다. = She has brown eyes. 머리카락 (hair) *In Korean, 머리 (head) is often used to indicate 머리카락 (hair). 검은머리 = 검은머리카락 (Black head = Black hair) 갈색머리 = 갈색머리카락 (Brown head = Brown hair) 그녀의머리색은검은 / 흰 / 갈색입니다. Her hair is black/white/brown. 그녀의머리는길다 / 짧다 / 웨이브지다 / 곱슬머리다 / 부드럽다 / 뻣뻣하다. Her hair is long/short/wavy/curly/soft/firm. 눈 (eye/eyes) 그는검은 / 갈색눈을가지고있다. Korean SOLT I Construction for there has been, there has never been Korean equivalents for there has been and there has never been are - 한일이있다 and - 한일이없다 respectively. 일 has many different meanings such as event, business, matter, and problem. When it is used with the verb 있다 or 없다, it often indicates an experience as in there has been, or there has never been.. Verb stem ending in a vowel + ㄴ + 일이있다 Verb Stem + ㄴ + 일이있다 GRAMMAR NOTES 가다가 + ㄴ간일이있다 오다오 + ㄴ온일이있다 보다보 + ㄴ본일이이다 Verb stem ending in a consonant + 은 + 일이있다. Verb Stem + 은 + 일이있다 먹다먹 + 은먹은일이있다 읽다읽 + 은읽은일이있다 The same rule applies to the expression - 일이없다. *There are many exceptions where these rules don t apply. This will be further discussed in the conjugation section. 203

The Sentence-Concluding Ending 네 ( 요 ) - 네 ( 요 ) is a sentence-concluding ending in the polite informal or intimate speech. It specifies a statement, often with an exclamation tone of realization. Sentences in 네 ( 요 ) spoken with a rising intonation at the end mean the speaker expects the listener to agree with the statement or to confirm it. - 네 ( 요 ) may be added to all verb stems. Korean SOLT I Negative Imperative Forms 말다 The verb 말다 can be used as an independent verb and its basic meaning is to stop (doing) or to desist. - 말다 is often used in the pattern of Verb stem + 지 + 말다 Verb stem Verb Stem. + 지 + 말다 Sample Sentences 가다 (to go) 걱정하다 (to worry) 가 + 지 + 말다 걱정하 + 지 + 말다 오늘가지마세요.
