Purpose of the Course Sound exegesis is foundational to persuasive preaching. Working with 1 John, this course seeks to prepare those in proclamation ministry for the task of expository preaching. As such, the Pastoral Ministries Division and Biblical Studies Division desire to help develop proclamation skills in the area of New Testament epistles, word studies, and theological analysis all while remaining sensitive to the task of rightly dividing the Word of God. The work is aimed at providing a model upon which students can establish an effective life-discipline of study and sermon preparation. Core Values, And Curriculum Competencies Addressed Our seminary has five cores values: doctrinal integrity, spiritual vitality, mission focus, characteristic excellence, and servant leadership. This seminar relates in some way to all five core values, but especially mission focus which states in part: We are here to change the world by fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandments through the local church and its ministries. The core value focus this academic year is Servant Leadership. NOBTS also has seven basic competencies that guide our Doctor of Ministry programs : Biblical Exposition, Christian Theological Heritage, Disciple Making, Interpersonal Skills, Servant Leadership, Spiritual and Character Formation, and Worship Leadership. This course especially addresses the Biblical Exposition competency by means of helping the student learn to interpret the Bible accurately. Course Description This seminar will examine the process of formulating a proper exegesis of a New Testament epistle. Consideration will be given to an analysis of the grammar, syntax and structure that is found in a selected text. structural/exegetical/theological perspective with a view towards constructing expository sermons commensurate with the textual structure. Five Outline Sermon Manuscripts Each Student will study five selected paragraphs randomly assigned by professor and will develop each outline sermon manuscript on the paragraphs including key points for the presentation during class. If a student is absent from more than 6 (50 minute) Class meetings, he/she will not receive credit for the course. The permitted absences (e.g., due to a death in the family, illness, or other emergencies) must be noted in writing and given to the instructor in the class period immediately following the absence. When they are accepted, they will not count against the student for purpose of grading, though they still will count toward the total absences allowed by the instructor. For grading purposes, 10 points for one absence for a class will be deducted.
