( 새영화를상영하고있는극장에가자.) The boy injured in the accident was my brother. ( 그사고에서다친소년은나의형이었다.) (1) '~ 하는' 이라는능동이나진행의의미를가질때, 동사에 -ing를붙인현재분사의형태로 명사를수식한다. GRAMMAR - 문법돋보기 2 접속사 although Although Kevin is not very tall, he is the best player on his school basketball team. (Kevin 은키가아주크지는않지만, 그는학교농구팀에서가장뛰어난선수이다.) We went out although it was raining. ( 비가내리고있었지만우리는밖으로나갔다.) Even though she is poor, she always helps others. ( 그녀는가난할지라도항상남을돕는다.) (1) although는 ' 비록 ~ 일지라도, ~ 이긴하지만, ~ 이라하더라도' 라는의미이다. although 다음에는절( 주어+ 동사) 이온다. 비슷한의미의 in spite of(~ 에도불구하고) 다음에는명사( 구) 가온다. In spite of the rain, we enjoyed our vacation. ( 비에도불구하고, 우리는휴가를즐겁게보냈다.) (2) although 대신 though를쓰기도하며, 의미를강조할때는 even though[if] 를쓸수있다. cf. 형식을갖춘문제나주절보다앞에올때는보통 although 를쓰며, even though 의 though나문장끝에덧붙이는 though( 그래도) 는 although로대신할수없다. - 6 -

What about people from different cultures? Do you think they would say the same? People from different cultures may see the picture in different ways. There was a study using the picture above. Many Americans focused on the elephant in the middle. They said that there was a large elephant. however, most Koreans focused on the whole picture. They said that there was an elephant walking in the jungle. A big difference, isn't it? Why did they see the picture differently? Western cultures usually see the world through a 'wide-angle lens.' Now, take a look at the next picture. Which two go together? In this study, most Americans chose the monkey and the panda. They said that the monkey and the panda are both animals. Most Koreans chose the monkey and the bananas. They said that monkeys like bananas. Why did they see the picture differently? In Western cultures, people often put things into groups. In East Asian cultures, relationships between things are more important. What do you think about these differences? Although East Asian and Western cultures are different, there is no right or wrong way to see the world. We should respect these differences. They make the world a more interesting place to live in. - 7 -
