A message from Dr. Kim, Seong-kon Chief Executive Officer of LTI Korea Thank you for your interest in LTI Korea. LTI Korea celebrated its 10 th anniversary in Since its foundation in 2001, LTI Korea has worked to introduce the world to literature written in Korean, a minority language from one of the smallest countries in the world, under the slogan of Globalizing Korean Literature and has established itself as one of the country's most valuable institutions in cultural promotion. The two policy objectives LTI Korea focused on in 2011 were reevaluating the institute's achievements in light of its 10 th anniversary and strengthening the position of Korean literature in the Anglophone market. The 5 th International Translator's Conference held in September in celebration of LTI Korea's 10 th anniversary attracted great interest from both academic and literary circles with its theme of "Korean Literature into the World: the Past 10 years and the Next Decade." Publishers, agents, translators, and scholars from Korea and around the world took part in discussing LTI Korea's accomplishments and future tasks in order for Korean literature to secure its place in the global stage. In regard to strengthening the position of Korean literature in the Anglophone market, LTI Korea awarded grants to more translators working in English, held LTI Korea forums on the US East and West Coasts, and signed an MOU with Dalkey Archive Press to publish a Library of Korean Literature. The Korean Wave is sweeping the world in the areas of performance, film, K- pop and other music; the next new craze is Korean literature. Now is the time, with interest in Korean culture higher than ever, to extend our efforts in promoting Korean literature abroad. The artistic quality and merit of Korean literature hold up to that of any other country in the world. LTI Korea, as always, will continue to spare no effort in promoting Korean authors and Korean literature abroad in Literature is the medium that best embodies the culture of a country. With this in mind LTI Korea will actively support translations that surpass not only linguistic but cultural barriers in order to secure the place of Korean literature in the world. We look forward to your continued support and interest in the future. Thank you. Kim, Seong-kon Chief Executive Officer Literature Translation Institute of Korea March LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

Project Highlights traditional episteme (perception) hidden in the past for its humanistic possibilities. In other words, for Korean literature to reach out successfully to other cultures a firm understanding of not only Korean literature but other cultures is crucial as well. Strategies for Korean Literature to go into the World was followed by a round table discussion between writers, agents, and translators. Internationally acclaimed novelists Yi Mun-yol, Eun Hee-kyung, Lee Seung-woo; Yi Mun-yol s US agent at Andrew Wylie Agency, Jin Auh; Lee Sung-woo s US agent at William Morris Endeavor, Kirby Kim; and winners of the 10 th Korean Literature Translation Awards Choi Mikyung and Jean-Noël Juttet, translators of many works including Eun Hee-kyung s in French, participated in the discussion. The panel responded to questions from the moderator and corroborated and refuted each other s opinions without referring to prepared remarks, resulting in a candid discussion from currently active experts in the field. Korean publishers and members of the general public counted for a large part of the audience to see this star-studded panel, which was one of the most popular of all sessions. Internationalization of Korean Literature: Major Achievements of the Past Ten Years was a review of the past decade. Jennifer Crewe, editorial director of Columbia University Press, gave the first talk on Publishing Korean Literature at Columbia University Press: The Past 10 Years, followed by PÌo E. Serrano, CEO of Editorial Verbum, who spoke on The Introduction of Korean Literature to Spain: 2001 to Author Lee Ho-chul, many of whose works such as Southerners, Northerners have been published in translation, talked about his experiences and hopes as a writer under the title A Few Thoughts at the 5 th International Translator s Conference. Finally Professor Kwon Hyuk-ryul of the Jilin University Korean department spoke about the reception of Korean literature in China over the past decade under the title 10 Years of LTI Korea History and Korean Literature in China. Dr. Bruce Fulton of the University of British Columbia and LTI Korea Translation Academy instructor for 2011 spoke on how Korean literature must adapt to break into a global market under the title Translating Korean Literature in English: Prospects for the Next 10 Years. Suggestions for Further Development of LTI Korea was the final session of the conference. Professor Charles Montgomery of Dongguk University s English Translation Studies department gave a special lecture and answered various questions from the audience

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA The 5 th International Translator s Conference held in honor of LTI Korea s 10 th anniversary was a meaningful event that brought publishers, agents, translators, and scholars from over the world together in a valuable exchange of ideas, looking over the past decade and discussing the path ahead. 14 LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA 3) 10-Year History of LTI Korea LTI Korea published a 10-year history of the organization in honor of its anniversary. Two contracted writers and four employees put together this volume entitled 10 Years of Korea Literature Translation Institute. The two contracted writers covered translation and publication grant projects from an outsider s prospective, while the employees wrote about the Institute s history, international exchange programs, and educational programs for translators. The first part of the book covers LTI Korea s history chronologically from its inception in 2001 to the present, with the second part looking at each project in detail from translation grants, publishing grants, international exchange programs, training professional translators and supporting international cooperation. The third part of the book included short essays written on the theme of LTI Korea and I by nine writers, including novelist Jo Kyung-ran, Translation Academy students, publishers, and translators. Other sections included 10 Years of LTI Korea in Charts and 10 Years of LTI Korea in Pictures. 13 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

Project Highlights 4) Korean Literature English Essay Contest LTI Korea hosted the first Korean Literature English Essay Contest this year in celebration of its 10 th anniversary, to encourage the reading of Korean literature translated in English. While LTI Korea s primary mission is to publish high-quality translations of Korean literature throughout the world, thereby securing its place in international literature, it has always been anxious to find new ways to use English translations of Korean literature as a promotional tool. The first Korean Literature English Essay Contest was thus born under the decision that supplying high-quality English translations to readers within Korea was also an important role for a public institution. The contest was open to university students, adults, and foreign nationals living in Korea, who were invited to write essays on one of the four following stories : Park Min-gyu s Is that so? I m a Giraffe, Kang Young-sook s Brown Tears, Jeong Mi-kyung s Under the Fig Trees, and Yoon Dae-nyeong s Raising Swallows. These stories were selected as the most easy to read from the 15 stories published in volumes 1 and 2 of the magazine New Writing from Korea, published in 2008 and 2009 by the LTI Korea. Posters of the contest were distributed to universities and international studies graduate programs throughout the country, and appeared online on the LTI Korea website and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism blog from June to August. The quantity of entries was not large, but encouraging in terms of quality. 1 Grand Prize, 2 First Prizes, and 3 Honorable Mentions were awarded at a ceremony conducted in the Grand Hall of LTI Korea in December. Acceptance speeches for the awardees mentioned how the recipient s love of Korean literature was their motivation for entering the contest and that they hoped it would become an annual event so more people would read Korean literature translated in English. LTI Korea plans to hold a second contest in The contest will be advertised for a longer period than this year, and all online and offline promotional channels will be used to attract a greater number of contestants

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA 5) 10 th -year Anniversary Special Edition of list_books from Korea LTI Korea issued a special edition of list_books from Korea with a bibliography of Korean books published abroad in the past 10 years, in honor of its 10 th anniversary. The special edition looks at 10 key themes in fiction, namely: History and Memory, People, Women, the Avant-garde, Family, Love, Society and the Imagination, the City, Religious Transcendentalism, and Diaspora, and 6 key themes in children s books: Family, Friends, Animals, History, Fantasy, and Playing. Several works are introduced as examples of each keyword. The interview section ran intimate interviews with 5 novelists representative of their generation from the Korean War to the 2000s (Kim Won-il, Yi In-seong, Park Sang-woo, Kim Yeon-su, Kim Aeran), who spoke freely about how their work was influenced by the generation they grew up with. Three children s writers were also interviewed, namely pioneering illustrator Hong Seong-chan, illustrator of Waiting for Mom Kin Dong-sung, and Wandeuk author Kim Ryeo-ryeong. The Bibliography of Korean Literature in Translation, listed 426 titles in 28 languages published overseas between the years 2001 and end of 2010, organized by original title, target language, author, translator, and publisher. Notwithstanding its limitations due to the exclusion of translated works published before the foundation of LTI Korea, this full-color catalog includes cover art for all titles and has proven to be a valuable resource for those interested in published Korean translations. 15 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

Project Highlights 02 Strengthening the Position of Korean Literature in the English-speaking World The other key policy objective of 2011 was strengthening the position of Korean literature in the English-speaking world. Towards this end LTI Korea hosted two forums in the US, once each on the East and West Coasts, and supported writer s exchange events held in Korea and Australia in honor of the 50 th anniversary of Korea- Australia diplomatic relations. Toward the end of 2011, LTI Korea signed an MOU with Dalkey Archive Press to publish a collection of 25 volumes of Korean fiction and poetry in fall Thanks to the LTI Korea s sustained efforts Korean literature is slowly gaining prominence in the global market; strengthening its position in the Anglophone world makes sense as a means of focusing the institute s resources on the market at the heart of the publishing industry

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA 1) LTI Korea US Forum - West Coast Forum The LTI Korea US West Coast Forum was held from April 27 to May 1 in Los Angeles and Berkeley. Korean Society in Korean Literature, Korean Literature and Film, and Korean Authors vs. Korean American Authors were the main themes of the forum, with Korean authors Kim Joo young, Choi Yun, Jung Young-moon, critic Woo Chan-je, and local scholars John B. Duncan and Christopher Hanscom taking part. Keeping in theme with the first LTI Korea US Forum in 2009 that discussed ways for Korean literature to break into the US publishing industry and the second LTI Korea US forum that looked at successful examples for Korean publishers to follow as a working model, this year s forum provided a reality check on the current reputation of Korean culture and literature in the US. The first session held at UCLA consisted of presentations given by Korean authors and local scholars. John B. Duncan, director of the Korean Studies program, Christopher Hanscom, professor of Korean literature, Lee Nam-hee, professor of modern Korean history, and Professor Shih Shu-mei of the Asian Language and Culture department discussed the historical, literary, and social merits of the works of the Korean authors participating 17 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

Project Highlights in the forum. The second session was held at the Los Angeles Korean Cultural Center as a screening and discussion of films adapted from Korean literature, and the third session was an open discussion between Korean and Korean American writers at USC. The fourth session was held in Berkeley, where Korean authors spoke about Korea as Depicted in Korean Literature and Ken Wells, visiting scholar at the UC Berkeley history department, led the discussion. This year s forum led to a rediscovery of the meaning of Korean literature following a deeper discussion of Korean culture from various viewpoints such as culture, politics, history, and religion than last year, which mainly addressed practicalities in getting Korean literature published in the US. The 400 participants of the forum opined that they not only gained a better understanding of Korean literature but were profoundly moved by the dynamism of Korean culture that raised a country stricken by war to its current state of prosperity. - East Coast Forum The LTI Korea US East Coast Forum was held in late October in New York City and famed college city Binghamton, New York. Authors Mah Chong-gi, Gong Ji-young, Cheon Woon-young and critic Lee Kwang-ho took part in the forum held at Binghamton University and the Meet the Authors event held at the Korean Cultural Service, New York. Held under the theme of Rediscovering Korean Literature: Diversity of Contemporary Korean Literature, the forum was moderated by Choe Wolhee, Professor Emirata of English Literature at Polytechnic Institute, who is also a translator and publisher. The panel, consisting of professors Michael J. Pettid, David Stahl, and Nicholas A. Kaldis of Binghamton University and Robert E. Hawks of Hawks Publishing, exchanged valuable opinions on the past, present, and future of Korean literature. The first forum hosted by LTI Korea in Binghamton still attracted an audience of approximately 120, demonstrating a high level of local interest in Korean literature. The Meet the Authors event was held at the Korean Cultural Service in New York City and hosted by literary agent Barbara J. Zitwer, who introduced Shin Kyung-sook s Please Look after Mom to a global audience and is known to have a keen interest in Korean literature. Susan Choi, author of American Woman and The Foreign Student, and Ben Ryder Howe, author of the popular My Korean Deli: Risking It All for a Convenience Store (recently published in Korean), took part in the event that was structured as an open discussion between the writers. An audience of 150 including local publishers, agents, and press remained captivated for the entire three hours of the event, proving that interest in Korean literature is on the rise

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA 2) LTI Korea Signs MOU with Dalkey Archive Press The final achievement regarding this year s policy goal of strengthening the presence of Korean literature in the Anglophone world was LTI Korea signing an MOU with Dalkey Archive Press. With translations accounting for only 3% of all books published in the US, this agreement is a valuable step towards gaining entry in the US market. Shin Kyung-sook s commercial success with Please Look after Mom proved that Korean literature is marketable in the US. It is all the more encouraging that Dalkey Archive Press has agreed to publish a collection of 25 works of Korean fiction and poetry in 2014 translated by LTI Korea grants. Dalkey Archive Press was the first to approach LTI Korea regarding this project. Dalkey Archive Press is one of the most influential nonprofit publishing houses in the US that has consistently published not only works of English literature but translations of great literary and artistic merit. Many winners of the American Book Award, the Pulitzer Award, and the Nobel Prize for Literature are on Dalkey Archive s list of publications. Dalkey Archive s Library of Korean Literature will include such timeless works as Yi Sang s Essays, Lee Inseong s Into Strange Time, Oh Jung-hee s Old Well, Park Hyung-suh s Nana at Dawn, and Jung Young-mun s short story collection. The publication of the Korean Literature Series by LTI Korea and Dalkey Archive Press will mark a turning point in the status of Korean literature in the Anglophone world. It is expected to raise the profile of the LTI Korea s overseas publishing efforts as one of its most prestigious endeavors up to date. 19 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

Project Highlights 3) Writer s events Celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of Korea-Australia Diplomatic Relations Writer s events were held on two occasions in 2011 to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Korea-Australia diplomatic relations. The first retreat was held from May 15 to 30 at Seoul Art Space Yeonhui, with Australian poets Barry Hill, Ivy Alvarez, and Terry Jaensch giving readings and engaging in discussion with 20 Korean poets and 100 Korean readers. Korean poets Hwang Tong-gyu, Park Ra-yeon, Kim Ki-taek, and Park Hyung-jun were invited by the University of Melbourne s Asia Link and the Melbourne Writer s Festival for the second event held from August 27 to September 6 in Sydney and Melbourne. The poets gave readings at the Red Room Poetry Company and took part in seminars with Korean-Australian writers in Sydney, and gave readings with former retreat members Barry Hill, Ivy Alvarez, and Terry Jaensch at the Melbourne Writer s Festival. Translations of 40 poems by poets participating in the events appeared in the Australian poetry webzine Cordite, a lasting reminder of the friendship between the two countries

2011 Translation and Publication Grants LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS Translation and Publication Grants The three main outcomes of this year s translation and publication grant programs can be summarized as thus: first, that the LTI Korea Assigned Books List proved to be an effective incentive in attracting translators; second, that the new selection system proved to be an efficient way of selecting the most worthy applicants; and third, that the LTI Korea Translator program has gained momentum and is now offered in more languages. Since 2010 the LTI Korea has maintained a LTI Korea Assigned Books List based on the works thought to be most representative of Korean literature and marketable overseas. Books recommended by writers, translators,

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA publishers, and members of the general public are judged by the LTI Korea Assigned Books Selection Commission, out of which 255 new titles were approved this year, making the number of titles on the list a total of 501. Translation grant applications were accepted for these titles and a total of 105 grants were awarded in 14 languages. The number of applicants greatly increased thanks to an aggressive promotion campaign, leading to an overall increase of competence among approved applicants with the bonus result of discovering new talent. These are tangible results that were not apparent last year, proving that awarding translation grants for titles on the LTI Korea Assigned Books List is a working system on the right track. The judging system for awarding translation grants was overhauled starting from the 4 th quarter of Under the previous system, both Korean and foreign judges read all submissions in the initial round of selection. Now initial submissions are screened by only foreign agents and editors before moving on to the next stage. This puts a greater emphasis on readability and increases the likelihood of selecting applications that foreign readers might be interested in, as well as being more efficient in that Korean judges only read applications that have already been screened for such desirable qualities. Regarding the LTI Korea Translator program, Japanese was added to the existing languages of English, French, German, Spanish, and Chinese, making room for more exemplary translators to work under stable conditions. Participants from previous years that finished their projects were also awarded grants for new projects, with a total of ten teams receiving grants. In addition LTI Korea also awarded Video and Performance Subtitle Translation Grants for 30 titles translated by five institutions under business agreements with the LTI Korea, and awarded a total of 54 publishing grants in 15 languages for 41 titles in literature, 12 in the humanities, and 1 children s book. LTI Korea Translation Grants 23 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS 1) Translation Grants Applications for translation grants have steadily increased since LTI Korea switched to awarding grants only for titles on the LTI Korea Assigned Books List, but the overall number of grants awarded was 105 in 14 languages, or slightly less than last year due to stricter selection processes. Out of these 94 were awarded to translators working in 14 languages submitting applications to the quarterly selection process, 10 to LTI Korea translators appointed in 2009 working in 6 languages, and 1 to a planned project. The breakdown by genre was similar as the previous year, with 57 in fiction heading the list, followed by 22 grants for children s books, 18 for humanities (including 2 classics), and 8 for poetry. Finished translations are published only upon approval of a panel of one Korean and one foreign judge for each language. In 2011, 69 finished translations in 11 languages were judged. In addition, a number of formerly completed translations underwent revisions to meet the high quality standards of foreign publishers, resulting in 9 translations in 4 languages being revised / / / / LTI Korea Translator

2011 INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA In 2011, the International Exchange Program contributed to bringing Korean literature closer to readers across the globe by holding events such as the LTI Korea Forum, literary events in commemoration of the establishment of diplomatic relations, international exchange programs, writers residency, and book essay contests for readers overseas. The LTI Korea Forum was launched as a venue for Korean writers, translators, publishers, and press to exchange their views on the reception of Korean literature, and thereby review the awareness of Korean literature overseas and promote the distribution of Korean books. In 2011, the Forum was held in a total of seven regions; the West Coast (Berkeley and LA) and East Coast (Binghamton and New York City) of the US, France, Germany, Spain, China, and Japan. The LTI Korea Forum will continue to be held in significant regions around the world, expanding the base and contributing to the localization of Korean literature. LTI Korea held workshops for translators residing in the US, Europe, and Asia, providing a forum for translators to discuss their craft and to form local translator s communities, creating a local platform for the publication of translated Korean literature. LTI Korea also hosted literary events celebrating the 50 th anniversary of Korea-Australia diplomatic relations, following with the institutional goal of strengthening its position in the Anglophone world. Consequently, it was a meaningful year of consolidating friendship among literary persons and laying the foundation for expanded cultural exchanges through various writer-exchange programs. The International Residency Program sent writers to the University of Iowa and Ohio State University in the US, the University of Aix-en-Provence in France, the University of Bonn in Germany, and the University of Málaga in Spain. The Book Review Contest for Overseas Readers was held in 16 countries and contributed to the promotion of Korean literature abroad. LTI Korea also published special Korean literature editions in literary magazines such as the American Azalea, Australian Cordite, French Revue des Deux Mondes, Mexican Luvina, Chinese, and Japanese Subaru, providing local publishers and researchers with information on Korean literature and heightening receptivity towards Korean literature. 47 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS LTI Korea Forum In 2011, the LTI Korea Forum was held in a total of six countries, including the East and West Coast Forums in the US, according to the institutional goal of strengthening its position in the Anglophone world. Now in its third year, the LTI Korea Forum discussed localization strategies in such European countries as Spain, France, and China, and Asian countries such as China and Japan. í 1) LTI Korea Spain Forum The LTI Korea Spain Forum was held for three days from May 16 to 19 in Madrid and Málaga. The theme of the forum was The Reception and Prospects of Korean Literature in Spain and it was the first that LTI Korea has hosted in Spain. The event included seminars at which authors, translators, and publishers discussed how to improve Korean literature s local prospects, meetings between Korean authors and Spanish authors, and author readings. Former Spanish Ambassador to Korea, Juan Bautista Leña, CEO of Editorial Trotta Alejandro del Río Herrmann,

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA and poet and Editorial Hiperión founder Jesús Munárris participated in the May 16 forum held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, where they discussed the current status of Korean literature in Spain and ways it could be improved. At the May 18 forum held in Málaga were present Enrique Benítez Palma of the Andalusian government, Juan Jesús Zaro of the University of Málaga s Department of Translating and Interpreting, and Fernando Cid Lucas of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where they discussed the translation and reception of Korean literature in Spain. The first LTI Korea Forum in Spain was a valuable opportunity for writers, translators, and publishers to network and discuss in-depth strategies for the localization of Korean literature. LTI Korea will continue to host regular forums in Spain to improve the export strategy of Korean literature and expand readers of translated Korean literature in the Hispanic speaking world. 2) LTI Korea France Forum The LTI Korea France Forum was held for three days from May 4 to 6 in Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Arles. The forum included academic seminars under the themes of Reception of Korean Literature in France and Translation and Circulation of Korean Literature in France, discussions between Korea s leading writers and important local figures and readings by Korean authors. Key speakers at the May 4 forum held at the Avignon Municipal Library included the library s own director, Nadine Foissac, whose recitation of the traditional Korean folk tale The Rabbit and the Dragon King attracted 49 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS much attention from the audience, with translator and editor Claude Mouchard and Professor Jeong Myeongkyo leading the discussion on the history and current state of Korean-French literary exchange. The May 5 Forum held at the Aix-en-Provence City Library had Korean writers giving lectures and professional performers giving readings of their works, much to the delight of the audience. The great number of attendants at the LTI Korea France Forum showed an encouraging local interest in Korean literature and authors. Many Korean authors have already earned praise from French critics and have a modest number of readers; it is hoped that events such as this forum will increase such interest. 3) LTI Korea China Forum This LTI Korea China Forum was held from September 26 to 27 at Shandong University at Weihai under the theme of Literary Activities of Writers and the World of Their Works in the Global Environment. Dean Wu Congju of Shangdong University s Humanities Department and Professor Hong Jeong-seon of Inha University opened the forum, where Korean writers Kim Won-il and Kim Sa-in and Chinese writers Qiao Jian, Wang Chunbo, Cui Xian-hao, and Chen Li-ping thrilled the 200-something audience with their opinions on writing global literature. Next translators Han Mei, Jin Hezhe, Li Xuetang, and Fan Weili spoke about their experiences and offered their thoughts on the future of Korean literature in China under the theme of Translation and Circulation of Korean Literature. This forum was particularly meaningful in that it was the first LTI Korea forum to be held in Shandong, which has the most contact with Korea of all the provinces (previous forums were held in Beijing and Nanjing)

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA Shandong University at Weihai offers the ideal forum for Korean-Chinese literary exchange thanks to its Korean Studies Center and prominent Korean Language department. Hosted at the Societaetstheater in the old center of Dresden, the Firenze of Germany, the forum discussed localization strategies and translating Korean literature as a means of cultural diplomacy. Korean authors Yi Mun-yol, Choi Seong-ho, Bae Su-ah and professors of Korean studies and German translators were present. Participants discussed common difficulties in translation and agreed upon the need to share information and for the LTI Korea to play a more active role, as well as in what scope Korean literature in translation may function as cultural diplomacy. The forum came to the same conclusion as the earlier European Translator s Community held in Frankfurt, which agreed that Korean literature abroad was now at the stage where quality of translations was the area that needed the most improvement. Germany being one of the earliest markets where Korean literature broke through, the forum was a success in that the participants came to a consensus on the need for better quality translations and discussed how to achieve such goals. 51 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA Information Management Many improvements and changes were made regarding informatization in Outwardly, LTI Korea completely overhauled its information management infrastructure to rectify the problems pointed out in consulting reports Mid to Long-Term Roadmap for LTI Korea (2008) and Strategic Plan for LTI Korea Information Management (2010). Both reports agreed that the weakest point of the current information management system was its repetition of information across disparate systems and lack of continuity. This problem was addressed over the past year by combining databases and deleting redundant and repetitive information. Thanks to these efforts, the database is now a scalable and synchronized system. 83 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS Inwardly, the LTI Korea Library and the Information Management Department were merged for both administrative and access reasons. Formerly the library operated independently, functioning as an archive for all material used in promotional events and introductory guides to authors and their works. Merging with the Information Management Department has allowed the Library to provide high-quality content in a more systemic, effective way as well as respond better to external changes. The excellence of LTI Korea content has been recognized by such institutions as Duke University, where it is used in Korean studies classes. Existing content must be updated and supplemented, however, to continue to meet these needs and exceed expectations. LTI Korea needs to offer digital content in more diverse channels by taking the system to the next level. In 2011 Overseas Publication Information Access (OPIA) has provided real-time information on foreign publishing markets to Korean publishers and copyright agents on its webzine. Most notable is its comprehensive bibliography of translated Korean books published abroad, of which study is hoped to contribute to forming strategies for copyright export in markets of various languages. Informatization of Korean Books

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA 1) Advancement of LTI Korea Web Portal The LTI Korea Web Portal launched in 2010 was a revolutionary step forward in that it consolidated previously disparate websites providing information on the translation and publication of Korean literature into a single platform. With the portal up and running, further demands regarding technical maintenance and content management are now being addressed in the redesign. On an external level, improvements were made to the portal s accessibility, web standards, and protection of personal information to meet the standards set for websites of public organizations. Due to lack of funds, improvements to accessibility and web standards were only completed up to 95% or higher, the score required for the portal to pass the initial judging stage of the Web Accessibility Quality Mark Assessment. As for improving protection of personal information, SSL protocol was set up and members were asked to sign up with an I- PIN to verify their identity in compliance with the Law on Personal Information Protection that was enacted in September Personal information stored in the portal s database was encrypted to prevent hackers from gaining access. In addition, the address books that each department used to manage separately in file format were merged into a single program, assuring a basic level of protection for personal information. Significant internal changes were made as well. The existing online application system for LTI Korea support and database of authors, translators, and translated works were improved substantially. The online application system was revamped to be more intuitive and convenient for the webmaster to check on incoming and pending 85 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS applications and a print feature was added for the convenience of clients. All information on Korean literature and authors offered on the previous website was made available, as well as records formerly archived offline such as introductory guides on authors prepared in honor of LTI Korea s 10 th anniversary and photo and video documentation of LTI Korea events. Most notably, the search feature was refined to ensure accurate results in all languages on offer. For instance, searching for the author Kang Kyung-ae now yields the same results no matter what spelling the query uses in English they will all direct to the same name, just as there is only one spelling in Korean. The redesign completely revamped the menu of the home screen and added shortcuts to submenus. The Web Portal will continue to make updates and improvements based on user feedback to ensure that it provides accurate and abundant information about Korean literature in translation

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA 2) Overseas Publication Information Access (OPIA) Founded on October 1, 2010, Overseas Publication Information Access (OPIA, ) is a tool that aids Korean publishers in exporting copyrights. OPIA s role as a valuable database was strengthened in 2011 as Korean publishers and agencies took full advantage of the up-to-date overseas publication information on offer. OPIA s website offers information under the following categories: Korean books in the world, basic copyright export knowledge, foreign publisher intros, trends in the global publishing industry, publishing cultures in different countries, and reports on international book fairs. This year OPIA published 163 briefs on world publishing trends as well as 79 in-depth stories on its website. A total of 6 newsletters (issues 3 to 8) based on content from the website were sent to over 500 members of the publishing industry. OPIA utilized SSN such as Twitter and Facebook to provide the most up-to-date information and network with working-level executives in the publishing industry. In 2011 OPIA worked to abolish one of the greatest difficulties Korean publishers face in export efforts, namely the lack of information on Korean books already published abroad. To this end OPIA compiled bibliographies of Korean books published abroad and used this list to research how many of these books were in circulation overseas, as well as which libraries had copies of them. OPIA concluded that a total of 3,272 Korean books in 15 languages were in circulation and published the results, including where to purchase them, on its website. In 2012 OPIA will continue to update this list and maintain its position as provider of real-time publishing information. As part of its efforts to create a system that effectively manages translated Korean books post-publication, two additional projects are in progress. First, LTI Korea will make an effort to purchase all books on the list of Korean books in circulation overseas complied by OPIA for the LTI Korea Library or additional space as necessary. Secondly, the OPIA s bibliography will be provided in book form to publishing industry workers. It is hoped that this information will be of practical value to copyright export agents in planning their overseas strategy. 87 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION GRANTS 1) LTI Korea Library Opened in 2007, the LTI Korea Library is the only library in Korea specialized in translations of Korean works of literature and other publications. The library is open to translators, researchers, writers, and the general public for reading and checking out as well as providing a bibliography of translated Korean books and offering e- library services online. As of 2011 the collection consists of 8087 volumes (6413 titles) of translated works and studies related to Korean literature, periodicals on translation and Korean literature, reference materials including dictionaries, audiovisual data such as CDs and DVDs on Korean literature, and materials created for Korean authors on overseas tours and forums. The library is also in charge of creating a reference guide on Korean authors. In 2011,12 new authors including novelists, poets, and children s writers were added to the guide. The guide includes information on the author s work, biography, chronology, excerpts of well-known works, and quotes. Up to date the library has produced guides to 167 authors (104 novelists, 60 poets, 3 playwrights) that have been used as introductory materials on said authors overseas. The library has also donated 1,283 translated books that the LTI Korea funded and formerly received copies of to 82 organizations including public ministries, agencies, and offices in Korea as well as Korean embassies, con

LITERATURE TRANSLATION INSTITUTE OF KOREA sulates, and cultural centers and international book fairs such as the Abu Dhabi International Book fair. On a related note, the library donated 7,856 books to 60 organizations as part of its Sharing Translated Korean Books program. This program provides high-quality translations of Korean literature to institutions in Korea that formerly lacked access to any such materials, effectively promoting LTI Korea s efforts and serving the community. In 2012, the library will continue to expand its collection with particular regard to books on Korean culture and network with other libraries in Korea and abroad. It will provide lists of new translations and purchase information to Korean Studies departments and Korean embassies abroad. The library also plans to redouble its efforts in distributing translated Korean literature in major publishing cities throughout the world via its Hub-Library Members project. 2) Sharing Translated Korean Books In 2011, LTI Korea launched the new program Sharing Translated Korean Books, as part of its goal to enhance the reputation of Korean literature abroad. The Sharing project involved donating translated Korean books on various subjects to government ministries, agencies, and offices that had frequent contact with foreigners, as well as public and private libraries in cities outside of Seoul and rural areas where the multicultural population and demand for books in foreign languages are high. This exposed foreign visitors to Korean literature when they visited government agencies and provided well-translated books to disenfranchised areas. The Sharing project first collected books by calling for donations on the LTI Korea website in June 2011, which were then approved and delivered to various organizations. In total 7,856 volumes (593 titles) were delivered to 60 organizations in Korea. LTI Korea hopes to expand this success in 2012 by donating new publications of books to libraries in key cities around the world. The goal is to build Korean literature collections throughout the world so that anyone interested in Korean literature may have easy access to such materials. 91 LTI KOREA ANNUAL REPORT
