The study was performed with the target of carbonate rocks distributed randomly small size in the southern area of south Korea. Considering the appearance of twins (thin or thick straight twins with one or two twin sets), average twin strain ( %), thickness ( µm) and intensity ( twins/mm) from the results of calculated calcite twins, it is estimated that calcite twins were produced under temperatures lower than approximately o C. In the magnitudes and directions of principal strains, the maximum shortening strain axis (e 3 σ 1 ) is approximately N-S direction in the GS-1 area in the southern Gyeongsang Basin as well as in the BS-1 area in the southern Yongnam Massif, whereas E-W direction in the NR-1 area in the southwestern Ogcheon Fold Belt. In case of the maximum extension strain axis (e 1 σ 3 ), it is oriented in NW-SE and NE-SW directions in the GS-1 and BS-1 area, respectively, and in N-S direction in the NR-1 area. That is, it is suggested that the paleostress which produced the calcite twins may be applied at least more than two times in the study area. Key words : Paleostress, Calcite twin, Deformation temperature, Principal strain, Maximum shortening 고응력사의지시자로서방해석쌍정분석법을이용하여방해석내쌍정이생성될당시의변형온도와고응력장의상태및방향등을살펴보았다. 연구는한반도남부지역에소규모로불규칙하게분포하고있는석회질암석을대상으로수행되었다. 분석결과에서쌍정의형태 ( 한방향또는두방향의얇고두꺼운직선형쌍정 ), 변형률 ( %), 두께 ( µm), 치밀도 ( twins/mm) 등을고려하여추정한연구지역에서의방해석쌍정에의한변형온도는약 150 o -200 o C 이하로나타났다. 주변형률의크기와방향에서최대수축변형률 (e 3 σ 1 ) 의방향은경상분지남부에해당하는 GS-1와영남육괴남부에해당하는 BS-1 지역에서 N-S, 그리고옥천습곡대서남부에해당하는 NR-1 지역에서는 E-W 방향을보였다. 최대인장변형률 (e 1 σ 3 ) 의경우 GS-1과 BS-1 지역은 NWW-SEE ~ NNE-SSW, 그리고 NR-1 지역은 N-S 방향으로나타났다. 즉, 연구지역에는방해석쌍정의생성과관련된서로다른고응력장이최소한두번이상작용했을가능성을시사한다. 주요어 : 고응력, 방해석쌍정, 변형온도, 주변형률, 최대수축 1. 서론 옥천습곡대는한반도의중앙부에위치하며북쪽은 경기육괴와접하고남쪽은중국방향을보이는호남전단대와옥동단층을지질경계로영남육괴와접한다 (Fig. 1; Cluzel et al., 1990, 1991a, 1991b; Cluzel, 1992; *Corresponding author: kangss67@yahoo.co.kr 461

Kim et al., 1994; Oh et al., 1995). 옥천습곡대는 대 표적인 중국방향의 지질구조를 보여주며 그 지질시대 와 대비하여 많은 논란이 되어 왔다(So and Kim, 1975; Kim, 1976; Reedman and Flecher, 1976;

3 고응력의지시자로서방해석쌍정분석법 463 Lee, 1987; Kim and Yoon, 1980; Chough et al., 2000). 몇몇연구자들에따르면, 옥천습곡대는임진강대와함께남중국판과북중국판의충돌대인 Qinling Belt의연장선일가능성이있으며, 또한일본의 Hida Belt와도연결될가능성이있다고보고한바있다 (Hara, 1982; Nakazawa et al., 1982; Hong and Lee, 1989; Cluzel et al., 1990; Yin and Nie., 1993). 옥천습곡대는암상과변성정도에따라북동부의태백분지와남서부의옥천분지등두개분지로나눌수있다. 태백분지가비변성대에속하며화석을포함하고있는변성을받지않았거나약한변성을받은고생대에서중생대초기의퇴적암으로구성되어있는반면, 옥천분지는변성대에속하며화석을포함하지않은낮거나중간정도변성도의변성퇴적암과변성화산암으로구성되어있다. 옥천습곡대의지구조적진화사규명은한반도자체의지구조사뿐만아니라주변지역과의지구조적연관성을이해하는데있어서매우중요하다. 이러한이유때문에국내외연구자들에의하여옥천습곡대동북부와중부지역을중심으로한다양한연구들 (Kim, 1968; Son, 1970; Kim, 1971; Cluzel, 1992; Cluzel et al., 1990, 1991a, 1991b; Kihm et al., 1996; Kim and Cho, 1999; Cho and Kim, 2002) 의시작으로, 이후옥천습곡대서남부지역및호남전단대에대한연구들 (Hong and Lee, 1989; Kim et al., 1994; Kwon et al., 1993; Kim et al., 1995; Oh et al., 1995; Lee and Min, 1995; Kwon and Ree, 1997) 도활발하게이루어졌다. 본연구에서는고응력사의지시자로서잘알려진방해석쌍정분석법을이용하여옥천습곡대서남부지역, 영남육괴남부지역, 경상분지남부지역등한반도남부지역에소규모로불규칙하게분포하고있는석회질암석을대상으로고응력사를살펴보고자한다. 측정된방해석쌍정데이터는 NCSG(New Calcite Strain Gauge) 프로그램을사용하여쌍정의평균두께, 평균치밀도, 변형률, 압축및인장응력방향, 주변형률의크기와방향등이일괄적으로처리되어계산된다. 이렇게계산된자료를근거로하여쌍정이생성될당시의변형온도를추정하고고응력장의상태와방향을밝히고자한다. 2. 지질개요 연구지역은 Fig. 1에나타낸바와같이옥천습곡대서남부, 영남육괴지리산지구, 경상분지의일부분을포 함하고있는한반도남부지역에해당하며각각은편마암복합체를기저로이를관입하는수차례의화성활동과지구조운동으로복잡한지질양상을보인다. 연구지역의지질계통은크게선캠브리아기암층에서석탄기- 페름기평안층군, 트라이아스기변성석영반암, 쥬라기화강암류, 백악기퇴적암류, 화산암류, 관입암류, 그리고제4기충적층이전지층을피복하고있다. 본지역은선캠브리아기의편마암류및편암류에서부터제4기충적층까지다양한암석이분포하나목포 여수도폭에해당하는지역에서는고생대의조선누층군과제3기퇴적암류나화산암류는분포하지않는다 (Choi et al., 2002). 연구지역은지구조적으로한반도의영남육괴와옥천습곡대의경계를이루는소위호남전단대가 NNE- SSW 방향성을가지고폭 km 규모로약 400 km의연장성을보인다 (Yanai et al., 1985). 호남전단대는순창전단대와화순전단대로구분되며이들은연성전단작용을수반한우수향이동단층운동으로형성되었으며, 우리나라뿐만아니라동아시아의지구조사를해석하는데중요한구조선중의하나이다 (Kim and Kee, 1991; Kee and Kim, 1992; Lee, 1992). 더욱이본연구지역에는함탄층을포함하는평안분지와백악기말의화산암질퇴적암과관입암질로구성된경상분지가포함되며, 지질시대를달리하는각종화성암류가골고루분포하여각지질시대별로화성활동과지구조운동이활발했음을시사한다. 연구지역에서암석의분포형태는대체로 NNE-SSW의방향성을보이며, 이러한방향성은연구지역에발달해있는단층이나전단대등의지구조선들과일치한다. 3. 연구방법본연구는한반도남부지역에분포하고있는석회질암석을대상으로수행되었다. 한반도의지체구조해석에있어서옥천습곡대가가지는중요성이크기때문에, 주로옥천습곡대서남부지역에집중해서 8개 (IS-1, JS-1, JS-2, JS-3, HW-1, YW-1, NR-1, HS-1), 그외석회질암석이관찰되는영남육괴남부지역에서 1개 (BS-1), 그리고경상분지남부지역에서 1개 (GS-1) 등총 10개의암석정향시료를채취하였다 (Fig. 1). 채취한시료로부터방해석내의쌍정을측정하기위하여각시료마다남북방향에평행하면서수평한박편 1개와동서방향에평행하면서수직한박편 1개등쌍정관찰용특수박편을 2개씩제작하였다 (Kang et al., 2002). 박편은쌍정을용이하게측정하기위하여 15 µm, 9 µm, 1 µm 등

4 464 박영석 장보안 김정빈 강성승 의다이아몬드연마제를이용하여박편표면을순차적으로연마하였으며두께는약 5µm로제작되었다. 쌍정은 4축만능재물대 (4-axis universal stage) 와미세눈금자 (micrometer ocular) 가장착된광학용암석편광현미경을이용하여각시료에서 50개이상의방해석입자를무작위로선택하여방해석 c-축의방향및경사, 쌍정면의방향및경사, 쌍정의개수및두께, 그리고방해석입자의크기등을측정하였다. 측정된쌍정의자료는 Evans and Groshong(1994) 이개발한방해석변형률측정 (Calcite Strain Gauge, CSG) 법을기초로하여새로운포트란언어로작성된 NCSG(New Calcite Strain Gauge) 방해석변형률계산프로그램을이용하여처리한후압축및인장응력의방향, 쌍정의평균두께 (µm), 평균치밀도 (twins/mm), 총변형률 (%), 그리고주변형률의크기와방향등을구하였다. 방해석쌍정이생성될당시의변형온도는온도에따라쌍정의형태를분류한 Burkhard(1993) 와석회암층에서탄화반사도 (virtrinite reflectance) 와일라이트결정도 (illite crystallinity) 를이용하여측정된속성온도와쌍정의변형률, 두께, 치밀도등을비교하여쌍정이생성될당시의온도를결정 (Ferrill, 1991; Ferrill et al., 2004) 한연구결과를본연구결과와비교하여추정되었다. 쌍정을형성시킨압축및인장응력의방향은각각의쌍정면에서압축및인장응력의방향을계산한후각방향을평사투영하여최적의압축및인장응력의방향을계산하는 Turner(1953) 의 Dynamic Analysis 를적용하였다. 주변형률의크기와방향은최소 자승법 (least square method, ) 에의한 Groshong (1972) 의 Strain Gauge Technique를이용하여구하였다. 여기서, J 2 는 -(e 1 e 3 +e 3 e 1 +e 1 e 2 ) 로계산될수있으며, e 1, e 2, e 3 은최대, 중간, 최소주변형률의크기를각각나타낸다 (Jaeger and Cook, 1979). 한시료에서 J 2 쌍정의평균두께는측정한쌍정의총두께를쌍정의전체개수로나누어계산된각쌍정세트들의평균값을다시평균함으로서구할수있다. 또한, 쌍정의평균치밀도도쌍정에수직한방해석입자의넓이를쌍정의전체개수로나누어구한각쌍정세트들의평균값을다시평균함으로서구할수있다. 측정된쌍정과계산된응력장의적합성을검증하기위하여양의기대값 (Positive Expected Value, PEV (%)) 과음의기대값 (Negative Expected Value, NEV (%)) 으로나눈다. 양의기대값은측정된쌍정이계산된응력장과일치하는쌍정인반면. 음의기대값은측정된쌍정이계산된응력장과일치하지않은쌍정으로서계산된응력하에서는생성되지않았음을지시한다. 일반적으로측정오차등으로인하여소수의방해석입자에서음의기대값이나타난다. 하지만, 하나의시료에서 40% 이상의음의기대값이나타난다면그시료에대해 2번이상의응력장이작용했음을지시한다 (Groshong, 1972; Teufel, 1990). 이러한경우에는양의기대값을보이는쌍정과음의기대값을나타내는쌍정을분리하여계산함으로서두방향의응력장을구할수있다. 또한, 음의기대값이 10%-30% 범위일때, 전체쌍정에서가장큰편차를보이는 20% 의쌍정을제거하면향상된결과를얻을수있다 (Groshong et al., 1984). 4. 측정결과채취한 10개시료의박편으로부터방해석내의쌍정을관찰한결과 7개의시료중 IS-1과 JS-1의시료에서는극소수의쌍정만이관찰되었으며 JS-2, JS-3, HW-1, YW-1 그리고 HS-1 시료에서는쌍정이관찰되지않았다. 다만, 나머지 3개의시료 (NR-1, BS-1, GS- 1) 에서는방해석쌍정을용이하게측정할수있을정도 Table 1. 고응력의 지시자로서 방해석 쌍정 분석법 로 발달상태가 양호하였다. 쌍정이 관찰되지 않은 7개 의 시료는 약 10 MPa 이상의 낮은 차응력(differential stress)하의 역학적 변형에 의해서 생성되는 방해석 쌍 정의 생성조건에 부합되지 않은 지구조적 환경에 놓여 있었을 가능성을 지시한다(Turner, 1953; Tullis, 1980).

5 고응력의 지시자로서 방해석 쌍정 분석법 로 발달상태가 양호하였다. 쌍정이 관찰되지 않은 7개 의 시료는 약 10 MPa 이상의 낮은 차응력(differential stress)하의 역학적 변형에 의해서 생성되는 방해석 쌍 정의 생성조건에 부합되지 않은 지구조적 환경에 놓여 있었을 가능성을 지시한다(Turner, 1953; Tullis, 1980). 측정된 방해석 쌍정의 계산 결과를 정리하면 Table 1과 465 같다. 측정 결과로부터 각 시료에서의 방해석 쌍정에 대한 변형온도와 고응력장을 살펴보면 다음과 같다 쌍정의 형태 및 변형온도 쌍정은 동일한 전단응력하에서도 생성온도에 따라 형태와 두께가 달라진다. (1963) 의실내실험결과에따르면낮은온도에서생성된방해석쌍정은여러개의얇은쌍정이생성되는반면, 높은온도에서는소수의두꺼운쌍정이생성되는것으로나타났다. 연구지역방해석내의쌍정을관찰한결과, 쌍정의형태는모든시료에서주로한방향또는두방향을갖는직선형의얇거나두꺼운쌍정이우세하게관찰되었다 (Fig. 2). 이것은쌍정이 150 o C 이하의높지않은온도환경에서생성되었음을지시한다 (Burkhard, 1993). Ferrill(1991) 에의하면쌍정의변형률 (total twin strain) 은약 190 o C까지는 10% 이하로거의변화가없다가그이상의온도에서는 10% 이상의값을보이고, 평균쌍정의치밀도 (average twin intensity) 는 150 o C 이하에서는분산된형태를보이나 그이상의온도에서는 50 twin/mm 이하의값을보이는것으로보고하였다. 평균쌍정의두께 (average twin thickness) 는 150 o C 이하에서는 1µm 이하, o C 사이에서는 1µm 3 µm, 그리고, 200 o C 이상에서는 3µm 이상의값을보여방해석쌍정의두께가온도와밀접한관계가있음을보였다. 각지역에서의변형률, 두께, 치밀도크기를 Fig. 3 에표시하였다. Table 1과 Fig. 3으로부터알수있듯이경상분지남부에해당하는 GS-1 지역에서관찰되는방해석쌍정의평균변형률은 7.453% 로영남육괴남부에해당하는 BS-1 지역의 2.457% 와옥천습곡대서남부에해당하는 NR-1 지역의 1.235% 보다 3-6배이상높게나타났다. 쌍정의평균두께또한 GS-1 지 Fig. 4. 8 468 박영석 장보안 김정빈 강성승 twins/mm, BS-1: twins/mm) 에서는비슷하게높은값을보였다. 본연구의결과를 Ferrill et al. (2004) 의변형률-두께-치밀도에대한연구결과와 Fig. 4 에함께도시하였다. 쌍정의변형률 -두께사이의관계를살펴보면쌍정의두께는변형률의증가와함께두꺼워지는비례관계를보였다. 쌍정의변형률 -두께-치밀도의관계로부터연구지역쌍정이생성될당시의온도를추정해보면주로 200 o C 이하의범위에속함을알수있다. 이온도범위는쌍정의형태에의해추정한온도와대체적으로일치한다. 이상의쌍정의형태, 변형률, 두께, 치밀도등의관계를종합적으로고려하여변형온도를추정해볼때, 본연구지역에서관찰되는방해석쌍정은약 o C 이하의온도에서생성되었을것으로판단된다 주변형률및고응력장주변형률및압축응력과인장응력방향을등면적하반구투영법을이용하여 Fig. 5에도시하였다. 최대수축변형률 (e 3 σ 1 ) 의경우경상분지남부에해당하는 GS-1 지역과영남육괴남부에해당하는 BS-1 지역에서는대체적으로 N-S 방향과일치한반면, 옥천습곡대서남부에해당하는 NR-1 지역은 E-W에근접한방향을보였다. 최대인장변형률 (e 1 σ 3 ) 의경우 GS-1 지역은 NW-SE, BS-1 지역은 NE-SW, 그리고 NR-1 지역은 N-S 방향으로일어났음을알수있다. 이들방향은압축및인장응력방향과잘일치하였다. Amadei and Stephansson(1997) 는응력의상태로부터단층의형태를추정하였는데, 정단층 (normal fault) 은최대주응력의방향이수직 (σ v =σ 1 ) 이고, 중간및최소주응력의방향이수평 (σ H =σ 2, σ h =σ 3 ) 일때, 드러스트단층 (thrust fault) 은최대및중간주응력의방향이수평 (σ H =σ 1, σ h =σ 2 ) 이고최소주응력의방향이수직 (σ v =σ 3 ) 일때발생한다. 주향이동단층 (strike-slip fault) 은최대및최소주응력의방향이수평 (σ H =σ 1, σ h =σ 3 ) 이고, 중간주응력의방향이수직 (σ v =σ 2 ) 일때발생한다. 방해석쌍정으로부터계산된응력상태만을고려하여연구지역의단층형태를추정해보면, GS-1 지역은최대수축방향 (e 3 σ 1 ) 이거의수평이고중간응력방향 (e 2 σ 2 ) 은약간의수평경사를, 최대인장방향 (e 1 σ 3 ) 은거의수직경사를보여주어드러스트단층의양상을보인다. BS-1 지역은최대인장방향이약간의수평경사, 최대인장방향과중간응력방향이보통의수평경사를보여주어뚜렷한단층형태를추정할수는없으나주향이동단층의성격과대비된다. NR-1 지역은최대수축방향과최대인장방향 이거의수평경사, 중간응력방향이수직경사를보여주어주향이동단층의양상을보인다. 5. 토의 한반도의지체구조발달사를체계화하기위한일환으로한반도서남부지역을포함한남동부지역에대한다양한연구들이이루어졌다 (Hong and Lee, 1989; Kim et al., 1994; Kwon et al., 1993; Hwang, 1994). Hong and Lee(1989) 는옥천습곡대서남부의전단대에분포하는순창엽리상화강섬록암의미구조연구로부터중생대말기에옥천습곡대는유라시아판의동측연변부에작용한 N-S방향의압축응력을수반한지각운동의결과인좌수향취성변형을받았으며, 이작용은중국의 Tan-Lu 단층대와대비되어질가능성이크다고보고하였다. 이연구에서압축응력장의방향은이지역에해당하는본연구의 BS-1 지역에서얻어진최대수축변형률의방향과일치한다. 호남전단대내에분포하는엽리상화강암류의성인에대해발표한 Kim et al. (1994) 에따르면, 호남전단대내의엽리상화강암류는두지괴의충돌로압축응력장이형성되었고주향이동단층과드러스트단층운동에수반된화성활동으로생성된송림화강암류가후에쥬라기의대보운동에의하여 NE-SW 방향의압쇄엽리를생성시켰다고보고하였다. Kwon et al.(1993) 은옥천대내의주요단층대에대한연구로해남과무안지역에서추정단층선에대하여중력탐사를실시한결과, NE-SW 방향의단층대는고경사의정단층운동에의해형성되었으며그형성시기는무안지역은백악기이후, 해남지역은쥬라기이후로추정하였다. 이연구의결과는이지역에해당하는본연구의 NR-1 지역에서얻어진최대수축변형률의방향과응력상태에의해추정한단층형태와다르게나타나며, E-W 방향은오히려 Jang and Kang (1998) 이발표한송림변동시기에작용한고응력장과일치한다. 그리고, Hwang(1994) 는단층과절리등의취성변형요소들을이용하여백악기초이후한반도남동부에작용한고응력장을해석하였다. 그의연구에의하면, 경상분지지역은 N-S 신장 E-W 신장 N-S 압축 NE-SW 신장 WNW-ESE 압축 NE-SW 압축 NW-SE 신장응력기순으로지체구조변형을받았던것으로나타났다. 특히, NE-SW 신장응력기는백악기말에서제3기초에걸쳐이러한지체구조변형을지배했을것으로판단하였다. 이연구지역에해당하는본연구의 GS-1 지역에서나타난최대수축변형

Orientations of the maximum shortening and extension axes at each sampling location. 률은 이 연구의 N-S 압축응력장의 방향과 일치한다. 본 연구지역에서 얻어진 최대수축변형률(e3 σ1)의 방 향은 Fig. 6에서 보이는 바와 같이 대체적으로 서부의 경우 E-W, 남부의 경우 N-S 방향으로 두 개의 다른 응력장 형태를 보여 연구지역에는 최소한 두 번 이상의 서로 다른 고응력장이 작용했을 가능성을 시사한다. 하 지만, 이러한 고응력장이 광역적인 지구조 운동의 결 과인지 아니면 국지적인 지구조 운동과 관련해서 나타 난 결과인지는 명확하게 결론지을 수 없다. 더군다나 넒은 연구지역에 비해 분석된 시료의 개수가 적으므로 본 연구에서 얻어진 결과만으로 한반도 남부지역의 전 체적인 고응력장을 해석하기에는 다소 무리가 있다. 따 라서, 방해석 쌍정 분석법을 포함한 단층조사 분석법 이나 아문미세균열법 등과 같은 다른 고응력 분석 방 법들을 함께 적용하여 그 결과를 서로 비교하고 검토 하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 사료된다. 그럼에도 불구 하고 연구지역의 경우 극히 제한된 지역에서만 소규모 로 불규칙하게 관찰되는 석회질암의 분포상태를 고려 한다면 고응력장의 데이터 개수가 적다할지라도 연구 지역의 고응력장을 해석하는데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 6. 결 론 한반도 남부지역에 소규모로 불규칙하게 분포하고 있는 석회질 암석의 방해석 쌍정을 측정하여 쌍정이 생성될 당시의 변형온도를 추정하고 고응력장의 상태 와 방향성을 분석하였다. 그 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 연구지역의 방해석내 쌍정의 형태는 주로 한 방향 또 는 두 방향을 갖는 직선형의 얇거나 두꺼운 쌍정이 우 세하였다. 이러한 쌍정의 형태는 쌍정이 150oC 이하의 환경에서 생성되었음을 지시한다. 또한, 쌍정의 생성 온 도와 밀접한 관계가 있는 변형률-두께-치밀도 등의 관계 로부터 연구지역의 쌍정에 의한 변형온도를 추정해 보 면 200oC 이하로 나타난다. 결과적으로 쌍정의 형태, 변 형률, 두께, 치밀도 등의 관계를 고려면 연구지역에서

10 470 박영석 장보안 김정빈 강성승 나타나는방해석쌍정의변형온도는약 o C 이하에서생성되었을것으로추정된다. 방해석쌍정으로부터계산된주변형률의크기와방향에서고응력장의상태를살펴보면, 경상분지남부에해당하는 GS-1와영남육괴남부에해당하는 BS-1 지역에서최대수축변형률 (e 3 σ 1 ) 의방향은대체적으로 N- S와일치한반면, 옥천습곡대서남부에해당하는 NR- 1 지역에서는 E-W 방향을보여준다. 최대인장변형률 (e 1 σ 3 ) 의경우 GS-1과 BS-1 지역은 NW-SE와 NE- SW, 그리고 NR-1 지역은 N-S 방향을각각보여준다. 이상의고응력장의결과만을고려할때, 연구지역에는최소한두번이상의서로다른고응력장이작용했을것으로판단된다. 하지만, 이들고응력장이어느지구조운동과관련된결과인지를밝히기위해서는추가적인연구가진행되어져야할것으로사료된다. 사 사 이연구는교육인적자원부한국학술진흥재단 2005년도학술연구교수지원사업 ( 과제번호 : KRF C00012) 의지원으로수행되었으며이에감사드린다. 참고문헌 Amadei, B. and Stephansson, O.
