Initial Training for correctional officers What are the main objectives of initial training programs in your jurisdiction? How do you seek to ensure that these objectives are met? Are there any gaps in your training programs For the initial training, there is a training program for new employees with the three types in education targeted specifically to correctional officers (9 Grade), inspectors (7 Grade), and education/classification officer. The education and training for new employees is centered on the basic manner and attitude and basic contents of correctional affairs with the main objects in the followings. Establishment of thorough point of view on the nation and code of ethics as government employee Acquisition of basic knowledge as government employee for correctional service Acquisition of practical affairs for inmate treatment and management Accomplishment of the goals for the above education and training is the primary goal of the education and training institution. Those are the most important goals to attain during the training period with the learning evaluation and attitude evaluation on the level of accomplishment. If a trainee is failed to pass the absolute minimal standard in the learning evaluation, he/she cannot complete the training program, and this is an important barometer for the newcomers in accomplishment of the education and training goal. The newcomers are yet to attain the knowledge and understanding of the correctional facilities that they are required to undertake the practical training in order to heighten the educational effect. The practical training has to be undertaken in a place like the mock correctional facilities where the real sense of work site is available. However, there are no mock correctional facilities within the Department of Correctional Staff Training (DCST) that would have the real sense of work site that it has to be supplemented. In addition, there is a need to convert the theory-oriented education programs into the practice-oriented education program with active participation. February 2008 * 155
