Imagining New Ethics beyond The Simulacrum of Fear: U.S.-Mexico Border as The Symbol of Globalization in 2666 Jungwon Park University of Northern Colorado Park, Jungwon (2012), Imagining new ethics beyond the simulacrum of fear: U.S.-Mexico border as the symbol of globalization in 2666. Abstract Roberto Bolaños posthumous novel 2666 depicts the unsolved serial murders of young women in Ciudad Juárez (called Santa Teresa in the novel) from the global perspective. By creating the Möbius strip structure wherein the beginning and the end of the novel are combined and converge in the U.S.- Mexico border, 2666 demonstrates that this femicide is not an accidental tragedy, instead it symbolizes the crisis of neoliberal global economy which became a dominant system all around the world since the 1990 s. This essay focuses on a narrative strategy wherein Bolaño employs the technique of repetition in describing the murder scenes and illustrating ineptitudes of the intellectuals who are unable to provide any solution to this tragedy. This strategy underscores the fear and meaninglessness which emerge as main images of the novel. 2666 emphasizes that Santa Teresa s femicide goes beyond the issue of crime and corruption. The silence built upon the voluntary consent of citizens who fear the violence and terror constitutes the real crisis of U.S.-Mexican border, a crisis that ends up being a monster, that is, an embodiment of the evil continuously engendered by the modern world. While configuring this dystopian, apocalyptic vision throughout the novel, Bolaño, at the same time, does not abandon his utopian desire and suggests new ethics that can confront the evil without fearing and escaping from it. Key words Ciudad Juárez, Femicide, Global ethics, Möbius strip, Silence system
