FOUR BEAUTIFUL CITIES ALONG THE SILK ROAD Covering over 6,400km the Silk Road or Silk Routes were central to cultural interaction throughout the regions of the Asian continent and an important connection between the West and East. I travelled on the path following in the footsteps of the silk traders. Some travelers complain about the sandy terrain and the incessant strong winds, yet I found the trip completely fulfilling thanks to the four beautiful cities I visited. 028 029
LITANG KARAKOL Enlightenment and Beauty Litang, Tibet Full of mysterious scenery Karakol, Kyrgyzstan 01 02 Located in the midst of a vast prairie, Litang County in Tibet is famous for the Ganden Thubchen Choekhorling Monastery founded in 1580 by the third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso. When I visited, the monastery was busy with pilgrims circling the monastery. An elderly man was circling the monastery while performing full prostrations every step of the way. Full prostrations, which require both knees, both elbows and head to touch the ground are an act of the upmost respect and humility toward Buddha performed by devoted pilgrims. Some pilgrims perform full prostrations for several years. Karakol is a city located between Tian Shan and Issyk-kul Lake in Eastern Kyrgyzstan. Issyk-kul Lake is the second largest mountain lake, after Lake Titicaca in South America. The landscape around Issyk-kul is renowned for its serene beauty, with animals peacefully grazing on the land. Unfortunately, my plan for trekking around Karakol had to be cancelled due to unexpected muscle cramp. SAMARKAND ASHKHABAD Samarkand 01 02 03 The Gorgeous scenery and the heavenly taste Samarkand, Uzbekistan The Registan square in Samarkand, Uzbekistan is full of Islamic architecture including the Medreses, colleges of Islamic instruction. The Samarkand is also popular for Bahodir Bed & Breakfast which offers some of the best food you can enjoy while surrounded by this beautiful ancient architecture. Many travelers do not hesitate to say that they had a taste of heaven at the Bahodir Bed & Breakfast and many more are determined to come back. The song of secret country Ashkhabad, Turkmenistan Located in the west of Central Asia, Turkmenistan is a major oil producing country. I took a stroll around Ashkhabad, the capital of Turkmenistan just after checking into my hotel. It was late evening and I did not expect to see much as I walked towards a brightly lit area which turned out to be a public park. The park was brightly lit and everyone in the park looked healthy and happy, greeting the stranger that had stumbled into the park with warm smiles. 1 2 3 4 Experience the thrill of urban racing 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 Hyundai Motor hosted the Brilliant Motor Festival between 4 th and 6 th of July. The event was organized to promote motor sports in Korea by giving a taste of urban racing. In addition to the urban racing event, exhibition booths with experience centers were set up for visitors who were not participating in the race. The event received a lot of positive reviews for presenting motor sports in a new light and making it more approachable. The 1 st round of the longest running One Make Race, the 2014 Korea Speed Festival was held during the festival. A number of side events were held including a demonstration run of the i20 rally car by the Hyundai- Shell World Rally Team. An event zone was created along the racing circuit, which hosted a number of exhibitions for the whole family. There was a classic car display booth, a pit stop experience center, racing games and the kid s car experience centers were particularly popular. There were many other events hosted during the festival, making this motor sports event more accessible for everyone. 070 071
