Racine s Phèdre, a tragic woman Abstract Jung, Hye Won <Phèdre>, Racine s most famous literary work, is classicism of verse drama that describes the story of Phèdre, a character of Greek mythology Phèdre is in love with her stepson, Hippolyte However, due to the forbidden love, they are faced with tragedy Racine s <Phèdre> is the best among dramatized works that has described the original myth concerning forbidden love and ardent passion <Phèdre>, which is well-known for its poetic rhythm, symbol, and words with many meanings, is often recognized as literature and music Despite the many motifs, fate, humanism, and the authority of the gods, <Ph èdre> constantly highlights the theme of love Especially, the main theme of this tragedy is love which Phèdre keeps in mind As a result, Phèdre expresses words bringing about the thought of a insanity So, <Phèdre> is called an word drama, a love and passion drama, and a death drama The abundant dramatic characteristics are explained by Racine s dramaturgy and words which are full of passion In Korea, Racine s drama is studied more than any other French writers of France, but his works are less performed The study on Racine s drama has not contributed to the background for performance because it has been focused only as a literature text 1 4 2
