2 디스플레이크기에따른사용자선호위치의변화 User-preferred position of computer displays of different sizes ABSTRACT User-preferred position data of the computer display were quantified to determine how the size and/or the number of computer displays (19, 24, 27.5, and dual 19 LCDs) influence the voluntary positioning of the computer display. Nineteen subjects performed a data entry task for 20 minutes with each of four display setups while their preferred display position data were periodically quantified. Subjects placed displays significantly (p<0.05) further as the size of display increased while maintaining the viewing angle of the top and center of display at or near eye height. Visual acuity reserve of all subjects (visual acuity of 20/30 or better) ranged from 2.0:1 to 3.2:1. No difference in viewing distance was found between the single 19 and the dual 19 setups. Results of this study suggest that users determine their preferred display position by the vertical dimension of display s viewable area, while maintaining a viewing distance of at least twice larger than individual s acuity threshold. Keywords: computer workstation, VDT, viewing distance, acuity reserve 1. 서론 현재알려져있는컴퓨터작업대에관한 가이드라인은사용자의시각적피로를줄이고 신체적편의를위해, 디스플레이의위치등에관한 정보를제공한다 (ANSI/HFES, 2007; BIFMA, 2002; ISO_9241-5, 1998). 이러한디스플레이의위치에 관한가이드라인들은사용자가선호하는 디스플레이의위치를측정하거나 (Grandjean, Hunting, & Pidermann, 1983; Jaschinski, Heuer, & Kylian, 1998), 사용자의불편함정도혹은목, 어께 근육등의근전도측정을통해마련되어왔다. (Fostervold, Aaras, & Lie, 2006; Jaschinski et al., 1998; Rempel, Willms, Anshel, Jaschinski, & Sheedy, 2007; Turville, Psihogios, Ulmer, & Mirka, 1998). 일반적으로사용자가느끼는불편함또는근전도 등의 physiologic response 들은디스플레이의위치가 사용자가선호하는위치에서벗어날때증가하는 것으로알려져있다 (Jaschinski et al., 1998; Psihogios, Sommerich, Mirka, & Moon, 2001). 사용자가선호하는디스플레이의위치 정보는과거의경우 14 혹은그이하의 디스플레이를사용하는사용자들에토대로하여 정해져왔고, 최근에사용빈도가많은 19 이상혹은 복수의디스플레이구성에관해서는충분히연구가 되지않았다. 본실험의목적은디스플레이의크기 (19 이상 ) 가변할때사용자가선호하는디스플레이의 위치를측정하고자하였다. 실험의결과는현재 사용되고있는가이드라인의추천범위들과 비교하여새로운가이드라인을개발하는데도움이 될것이다. 2.1 실험구성 2. 실험방법 본실험에서는디스플레이의크기와수에 따라네가지의조건이실험되었다 ( 표 1). 피실험자들은각각의조건에서 20 분간간단한자료 입력업무를수행하였다. 피실험자가선호하는 디스플레이의위치는 5 분마다측정되었다 ( 표 2). 표 1. 디스플레이조건 크기 Aspect ratio 조건 #1 조건 #2 조건 #3 조건 #4 19 5: : :10 Dual 19 5:4+5:4

3 표 2. 종속변수 변수 Viewing distance Viewing angle top; center; bottom Angle of view Display tilt Display height 2.2 컴퓨터작업대 설명 눈 - 디스플레이중심까지거리 눈높이와디스플레이사이의각도 디스플레이상단 디스플레이중심 디스플레이하단 눈과디스플레이양측면사이의각도 디스플레이기울기 바닥부터디스플레이하단까지의거리 본실험에사용된컴퓨터작업대는높이조정이 가능한의자 ( 등받이는 109 로고정 ), 높이 / 거리 / 각도 조정이가능한디스플레이고정대와키포드받침대, 그리고높이가고정된테이블로구성되었다. 본 실험의모든피실험자는주어진작업대의위치조절 범위내에서각자가선호하는디스플레이의위치를 정할수있었다. 작업대의조명은 530 Lx 로 유지되었다. 2.3 실험과정 총 19 명의피실험자가이실험에참여하였다 ( 표 3). 모든피실험자는시력이 20/30 혹은그 이상이었고, 1 분에 20 단어이상의타자속도를 가지고있었다. 신체적인불편함이나질환등의 이유로 2 시간동안컴퓨터를앉은자세로사용할수 없는잠재적피실험자들은실험에서제외되었다. 모든피실험자는참여전에실험동의서를 제출하였다. 표 3. 피실험자들의신체특성 평균 편차 나이 (yrs) 신장 (m) 체중 (kg) 의자높이 (m) 피실험자는총 2.5 시간동안네가지의 디스플레이조건들에서각각 20 분간간단한컴퓨터 사용작업을하였다. 조건들의순서는 balanced Latin square 의순서를따랐고, 5 분이상의휴식시간이 조건들사이에주어졌다. 컴퓨터사용작업은 피실험자들이하나의 application (Microsoft Word 2007, Microsoft Corp., WA, U.S.A.) 에서다른 application (Endnote v.x2.0.1, Thomson Reuters, NY, U.S.A.) 으로필요한사항들을선택입력하여옮기는 작업으로, 큰디스플레이혹은 dual 디스플레이 구성이흔히요구되는작업으로설계되었다. 두 applications 는좌우로배치되었고, 각 application 의 크기와위치는피실험자에의해선택되었다. 사용된 글자들의크기는 3.2 mm ( 영문대문자높이 ) 로 고정되었으며, 이크기는 Microsoft Office applications 에서폰트사이즈 12 에해당하는영문 글자들이 19 디스플레이에 100% 비율로 사용되었을때의크기이다. 또한이크기는시력이 20/30 혹은그이상의피실험자들에게최대 1.0 m 의 거리에서최소 1.5:1 의 acuity reserve 를제공하는 크기이다 (Whittaker & Lovie-Kitchin, 1993). 각각의디스플레이조건에서작업을 시작하기전, 피실험자는컴퓨터사용작업을 시작하기전의자의높이, 팔걸이의높이 / 폭 / 깊이, 키보드받침대의위치, 디스플레이의위치를자신이 선호하는위치로조정하였다. 작업을시작한후에는 매 3 분마다위에열거된작업대구성요소들의 위치를다시선호도에맞춰조정할수있는기회가 주어졌다. 피실험자는주어진조정기회에만 디스플레이등의위치를조절할수있었다. 컴퓨터 사용작업이시작된직후, 그리고매 5 분마다 피실험자의자세와디스플레이의위치등이 3- dimensional motion capture system (NaturalPoint, Inc., OR, U.S.A.) 으로측정되었으며, 작업시작전과 끝난후, 피실험자의시력과시각적피로도, 신체 불편도가 Snellen chart 와 Likert-type scale 에의해 측정되었다. 또한다음디스플레이조건으로 넘어가기전, 디스플레이, 키보트받침대, 의자등의 위치는실험전의원래의위치 ( 피실험자로부터 가장멀고낮은위치들 ) 로복귀되었다. 디스플레이조건들이피실험자가선호하는 디스플레이의위치에미치는영향들은 repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) 를사용하여

4 분석되였고, 조건들사이의통계적차이는 Tukey s post-hoc test 로분석되었다. 통계프로그램 (Minitab v.15, Minitab In., PA, U.S.A.) 이사용되었고, 모든통계적비교는 p<0.05 의 significance criterion 을사용하였다. Eye horizontal 결과 피실험자가선호하는 viewing distance ( 눈과 디스플레이중심간의거리 ) 는디스플레이의크기가 19 에서 27.5 로커질수록증가하는것으로 나타났다 ( 표 4). Tukey test 는 27.5 의 viewing distance 가확률적으로 19 디스플레이들의 viewing distance 보다크다고발견하였다. 하지만 dual 19 디스플레이조건의 viewing distance 는 single 19 디스플레이조건의 viewing distance 와다르지 않았다. Viewing angle of the bottom of display 는 27.5 디스플레이가가장컸고, 디스플레이의크기가 증가함에따라 viewing angle 도증가하였다. Horizontal angle of view 도디스플레이의크기에 따라증가하였고, dual 19 조건에서가장컸다. Display height (from floor to the bottom of display s viewable area) 는 27.5 디스플레이가가장낮았다. 피실험자가선호하는디스플레이들의상대적 위치가그림 1 에나타나있다. 피실험자의시력과시각적피로도, 신체 불편도는디스플레이조건들사이에차이가없은 것으로나타나, 조건들사이에 carry-over effects 가 없는것으로판단되었다. 표 4. 디스플레이들의선호위치 ( 평균 ). Viewing distance (m) Viewing Angle top* center** bottom** Angle of view Display tilt angle Display height (m) Dual 19 P < * 눈높이위 ; ** 눈높이아래 < <0.001 그림 1. 디스플레이들의상대적위치. 4. 토의본실험의결과, 피실험자가선호하는디스플레이의위치는디스플레이의크기에따라다르며, 크기가커질수록디스플레이를먼위치에놓는것으로나타났다. 디스플레이상단의높이는, 디스플레이크기와상관없이, 대략피실험자의눈높이에일치하는것으로나타났다. 측정된 viewing distance 는가이드라인들의추천범위에들어가고, 과거작은디스플레이 (< 14 ) 와더큰크기의글자들을사용한실험들의결과와대략일치한다 (Grandjean et al., 1983; Jaschinski- Kruza, 1991; Jaschinski, 2002). 본실험에서글자들의크기가고정되었기때문에 viewing distance 의증가는피실험자에게인식되는글자의크기가 16.2 arcmin 에서 14.5 arcmin 로감소되는것과마찬가지이고, 이러한인식글자크기의감소는 acuity reserve 의감소로연결된다. 피실험자들의시력을감안할때, 본실험의피실험자들이선택한디스플레이의위치는피실험자들에게 2.0:1 에서 3.2:1 의 acuity reserve 를제공하였다. 즉피실험자들은자신들의 acuity threshold (5 arcmin 의글자를읽을수있는최대한의거리 ) 보다 2배에서 3.2배먼거리에디스플레이를위치하였다.

5 피실험자들이선호한디스플레이의높이는 viewing angle of display center 가눈높이에서대략 13.6 아래에있는위치였고, 이위치는 디스플레이의중간높이를추천하는연구들의 결과와일치한다 (Kothiyal & Bjornerem, 2009; Seghers, Jochem, & Spaepen, 2003; Villanueva et al., 1997). 본실험에서 dual 19 디스플레이조건이 가장넓은면적의 viewable area 를제공하였고가장 큰 angle of view 를나타냈다. 그러나피실험자가 선호하는위치 (viewing distance, viewing angle, display height) 는 single 19 디스플레이조건과 다르지않았다. 이결과로볼때피실험자들이 자신들이선호하는디스플레이의위치를정할때 디스플레이의가로크기가아니라세로크기에따라 정하는것으로추정된다. Dual 19 조건의 horizontal angle of view 는 single 19 조건의 angle of view 에비해 2 배가까이 크고 ANSI/HFES (2007) 의한계기준인 70 에 근접했다. Angle of view 의증가는목관절의좌우 방향회전움직임을증가하게할수있기때문에, 목 근육의피로에영향을미칠수있다. 이러한관계는 향후근전도를비롯한 physiologic response 들을통한 long-term 연구에서관찰되어야할것이다. 향후연구는더다양한작업환경 ( 작업시간, 글자크기, 조명 ) 과사용자들을포함하여 진행되어야할것이고, physiologic response 나 epidemiologic evidence 와비교하는과정이필요할 것이다. 참고문헌 ANSI/HFES: Human Factors Engineering of Computer Workstations (ANSI/HFES ), in.
