The following book review procedure has been adapted from The Short Piece and the Paragraph in The Modern Researcher, 5 th edition, pages 220-223, by Jaques Barzun and Henry Graf. All references are to this edition. All book reviews must be written according to the procedure set forth below: 독서보고서는반드시아래양식을따라야한다. 분량은 2 장이상이다 ( 글자크기 11, 더블스페이스, 레터사이즈 ). Paragraph #1: 먼저책의주제에대한독자의관심사를표명한다. Begin the review by presenting an idea of interest to your reader. The opening statement takes the readers from where they presumably stand in point of knowledge and brings them to the book under review. The briefest possible description of its aim, scope, and place in the world therefore follows the baited opening sentence and completes the first paragraph (221). Classify the book: What thesis, tendency, bias does it uphold, suggest, evince? (221). What is the basic point for which the author is arguing? What type of book is it? Into what debate is the author entering? Review and discuss the author s main contentions in the work. Do not repeat anything from Paragraph #2 but give detailed evidence supporting your classification in Para. #2. This is where you summarize the argument(s) of the book. These paragraphs should support and flesh out your classification of the work. Deal with additional or contrary points found in other author s or in your own research; but so far, these only amend or qualify what is acceptable in the book reviewed (221). This is the research component of this assignment. Spend several hours researching other works that have been written on the same or similar topics and compare the usefulness, accuracy, scope, validity (etc.) of the work under review with the other works that you have discovered in your research. Use care in your choice and use of other sources. Strike a balance of merits and faults, ending with some words about the author not yourself or the subject. Author and work should have the last word (221) Paragraphs#6: 주제에대한전망을한다.The broad field: discuss how your conception of the field of study [in which the book fits] is changed by the book. What further work [in the field] is needed to clear up doubtful points? Where have gaps been left that must be filled? (221). 4
How does the work under review add to your own knowledge or the general knowledge of the field? E. Final Exam (30%) 학기말시험 VI. COURSE POLICIES 수업규정 A. If a paper is handed in by the end of the class session, it will be penalized one full grade increment (for example, B+ to C+). IF YOU ARE LATE, DO NOT WALK THE FRONT OF CLASSROOM AND HAND THE PAPER TO THE PROFESSOR--THIS IS DISRUPTVE AND RUDE. WHETHER THE PAPER IS ONE MINUTE OR SEVENTY-FIVE MINUTES LATE, IT WILL BE PENALIZED THE SAME. WAIT UNTIL THE CLASS SESSION IS OVER AND THEN HAND IT IN. If an emergency on the day an assignment is due prevents you from submitting the assignment at the beginning of the class period, you may give it the professor before 12pm of that day along with a note explaining the nature of the emergency. The professor will then determine what penalty, if any, is appropriate. If an emergency the day an assignment is due prevents you from coming to campus and submitting the assignment to the professor, you must send the assignment to the professor by mail. It must be postmarked on the date the assignment is due and be accompanied by a note explaining the nature of the emergency. The professor will then determine what penalty, if any, is appropriate. To circumvent the possibility of being penalized because of an emergency, I suggest that you submit assignment prior to the deadline (the date given in the schedule below). E.
