The purpose of this paper is to examine main characters awakening of self in The Great Gatsby and The Crippled and the Fool through analyzing the structure of narrative. The manners of narration in F.S. Fitzgerald and Lee, Chungjun s novels search characters consciousness carefully. These writers narrative techniques present the close relationship and the creative reconciliation by conscious interaction through an emphasis on reader s active participation. It seems that Nick in The Great Gatsby and the older brother in The Crippled and the Fool pursue their internal inquiry. The difference is that main character, Gatsby does not acquire the awareness of a reality except Nick in The Great Gatsby, On the other hand, main characters, a younger brother and an older brother in The Crippled and the Fool acquire it. Commonly, these two novels show the aspects of the pressure from external world that discourages the desire of the main characters. Key Words: The Great Gatsby, F.S.
