ii Abstract A Study on the Three Key Factors of Gospel Preaching for Recovery of Korean Church Preaching Hyeok Lee Doctor of Ministry 2019 School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary This paper aims (1) to show that the Korean church even in its comprehensive crisis of declining church growth, diving levels of trust from the society, and increase of the de-churched can recover and grow again by recovering gospel preaching, and (2) to offer three core factors necessary for gospel preaching as an authoritative Word of God. Through analyzing works of global homiletic scholars and representative preachers of the Old Testament, New Testament, the Reformation, and great revivals, this paper affirms gospel preaching as the primary impetus that enables the church to overcome challenges and become healthy. This paper also argues for the importance of the personal character of the preacher and the understanding of the audience in addition to the message of gospel preaching itself. Thus, this paper summarizes a threefold general standard for gospel preaching and explains how to deliver such preaching. Chapter 1 introduces the research motive and purpose, while chapter 2 surveys various challenges of the Korean church and the consequent certain need for gospel preaching. Chapter 3 explores representative preachers in different eras, and the unique qualities of their sermons are analyzed in order to articulate the qualities of gospel preaching. As a result, we learn that the times in which known preachers worked were usually tumultuous times affected by and in desperate need for gospel preaching. The chapter presents core qualities of gospel preaching
iii necessary for the Korean church. Chapter 4 studies the relationship between gospel preaching and the personal character of the preacher. The positive case of Rev. Dong Hwi Lee, pastor emeritus of Jeon-ju Antioch Church, and negative cases of several pastors known for strong preaching but controversial lives are compared to show that the preacher s character, life, and credibility are important. Chapter 5 organizes a general standard for gospel preaching. Based on examinations of representative preachers in history, it defines text-centered preaching, Christ-centered preaching, audience-centered preaching, and Spirit-centered preaching. Chapter 6 claims that consideration for the audience matters in order to help the audience listen well to gospel preaching. It is noted that many representative preachers have been deeply concerned about the life and spiritual reality of their audience, and they used the language of the audience in their preaching. In conclusion, gospel preaching is argued to be a critical factor for recovery of the Korean church and its people for healthy growth again. The preacher s personal character and life, as well as the content of the message, must be evangelical for gospel preaching to be done authoritatively. A deep understanding and concern for the audience is necessary as well. The audience will hear preaching as an authoritative Word of God when the three factors preacher, preached message, and understanding of the audience work together for gospel preaching, and this will cause the Korean church to recover and grow.
