261 (Abstract ) A Study on the Korean ' Seol' Literature - the narrative nature of 'F abulou s Se ol ' by Yang, Hyun Seung Dept of Korean language and literature Graduat e School, Kook min Univ ersity Seoul, Korea Until now, t here h as not been a work arr angement and a syst emat ic st udy about a source and a concept, a work outlook except a gener al, fr agment ary comment about 'S e ol ' lit er ature, one of the type of Chinese Writ ing Prose, not only in the history of Korean liter at ure and Korean novel, but also in the Chinese classics. Also, there has not been a concret e comment about Chinese lit er ature, a source of 'S e ol ' type, except inspect ing some work s. Among t he work s of 'S e ol ' liter at ure, dividing into 'Ou t s poke n Se ol ' and 'F abulou s Se ol ', it is a fact that the works, which have the value of many epic literature, have been dead storage without being recognized the true value of work. Therefore, in this t hesis, I int en ded to be est imated t he value an d

262 position of 'S e ol ' lit er ature in the Korean Liter at ure as an ult imat e goal, t hrowing light on t he n ature of narr ation laying st ress on 'F abulou s Se ol '. In the first part, I arranged the general content on the 'S e ol ' type being ment ioned in the 'S e ol ' work s an d theory book of Korea and Chin a, in t he lat t er part, disclosed t he nat ure of suggest ion laying stress on 'F abulou s Se ol ' literature works. In t he second chapt er, in examining t he source an d t he foundat ion background of ' Seol' lit er ature in Chin a and Korea, in China comparing with ' Seol' literaure,<girakpyun> written by J angj a and <Chokruseol> written by J osik, which had been before the Ancient Writing Campaign of t he Dang dyn asty and the sever al ' Seol' work s of Hanyu, examined t he source and feature of ' Seol' developing one' s opinion being based on logicality as a Self- assertion Prose, laying stress on the content s mentioned in the style theory books ; Munsimj oyong, Munchemyungbyun. In Korea, examining the ' Seol' works of Lee Gyu- Bo which was the first ' Seol' type, fir st examined t he Chinese liter at ure prosperity background in t he Closing Shilla and Rising Baekje age and Chinese classics influx process and time. In the ' Seol' literature works of Lee Gyu-Bo, as if it were not the first ' Seol', with his work s various mat erials and expression patt ern, as if we could see the perfect figure, I found that the value of work was excellent. I defined th at t he concept of ' Seol' lit er ature, being originat ed from t he Book of Masters as a type of Self- assertion Prose Argument, being arranged by the Ancient Writing Campaign of the Dang Dynasty, being divided into 'Out spok e n Se ol ' and 'F abulou s Seol ', interpreting the justice in the middle of solving and describing, is a type of Chinese Writing Prose pattern developing self- assertion on the basis of logic. In the third chapter, in making Korean literature a general survey, at

263 first, I classified that the ' Seol' literature was divided into 'Out s pok e n Se ol ' and 'F abulou s Seol ', 'Out s pok e n Se ol ' twelve kinds, 'F abu lou s S e ol ' four kinds accor ding to subj ect mat erials. Moreover, in or der t o t ake a view of t he development an d the process of Korean ' Seol' lit er ature, I classified this age int o t he fir st period, the middle period, t he latt er period ; t he fir st period - from t he st art of ' Seol' liter at ure in the middle- latter of the Korea Dynasty to being on the rise of ' Seongrihak ' and 'Yigicheolhak ' of Seogyungdeok in the latter part of 15t h cent ury, t he middle period - from the period of ' Seongrih ak' argument of Seogyungdeok in the latter part of 15th century to the ch anging ideological, axiomat ical, disint erest ed ' Seongrihak ' of Lee- IK into Silsagusi academic t r aditions, t he latt er period - from the est ablishment of Silsagu si academic t radit ions t o Gabogyungj ang- t he slackening, decaying period of Chinese lit er ature laying st ress on ' Seol' lit er ature. The period division of ' Seol' lit er ature reflect s t he work t endency change in t he act ual ' Seol' liter at ure work in 'Ou t s pok e n S e ol ' especially not the wrong division by the simple ideological, philosophical ch ange. In the fourt h ch apter, in t hrowing light on the epic n ature of 'F ab u lou s S e ol ', I found that the work development in expression and form, at fir st, came int o view as t he development by argument ative dialogue and an alogical figur at ion, the former is t hat mast er an d guest describes development through logical dialogue about subject materials, t he lat t er in advance hypot hesizes an episode of fict ional n ature, interprets and analyzes logically about this, present s the case of a human mor ality. 264 descript ion st ructure, the fir st description st ruct ure doesn' t present only quest ion s and answer s in argument ative work s conspicuously, t he second descript ion st ructure describes leading a human mor ality, present ing an episode in t he fir st part, logically analyzing and int erpret ing this in obj ect ive at t itu de, t he t hir d descript ion struct ure describes adding t he writer ' s creation motive and object. In t he fift h ch apter, examining t he gener al content of 'F abu lou s S e ol ', I observed an admonition and a lesson, an analogy and a satire. In t he analogical form of speaking ' Eul' for ' Gab', a univer sal an admonition an d a lesson int ended for or dinary man, cont aining a content of an admonit ion an d a lesson int en ded for special man, especially t his appearing in t he last part of works in t he part of creat ion purpose an d intention. In the 'F abulou s Seol ' works, the euphemistic analogic ch aract er is more superior th an a satire n ature for powerful subj ect. In the sixth chapt er, I examined laying stress on t he n ature of epic and fiction, at first, describing the contents of the narrative nature being t r ansmitt ed or ally as a current rumor, and present ing writ er' s opinion logically analyzing and interpreting the significance an d meaning cont aining t he content. At secon d, I examined t he fict ional work s writt en by t he writ er ' s creat ion int ent ion perfectly, foun d the fir st half part of episode having by no means inferior the nature as a separate epic style. In the seventh chapter, I examined writer ' s the recognition of things and fiction presenting through 'F abulou s Se ol '. At first, I found that t he recognition at t itu de on things are divided int o recognit ion an affirmative recognition and a negative recognition, ' The affirmative recognition ' is a fabulous satire about a bad person laying stress on human being(the morality that human being must observe) recognizing
