2 2015 Voter s Guide SAS Association of Parents SAS Board Norms and Expectations The following list of SAS Board Norms and the Profile of Expectations for SAS Elected Board Candidates has been included to help all voters make an informed decision. SAS Board Norms The Board of Directors agreed in August 23, 2014 to follow these principles as it does its work. All Board members pledge the following: Work in the spirit of and in advancement of the SAS Mission Statement and Core Values. Keep all students and their learning at the center of our actions to ensure that they receive an excellent education and achieve their full potential; Engage constructively and positively in the work of the Board; Continuously work for a sustainable board culture of adherence to best governance practices Engage in high level, strategic, and generative work to ensure the long-term success of Shanghai American School; Support the Superintendent, school administrators, faculty, and staff in their responsibilities to lead and manage the school; Maintain appropriate confidentiality while being as transparent as possible with Board colleagues and the community; Respectfully and openly seek common ground even when disagreements arise. Profile of Expectations for SAS Elected Board Candidates Shanghai American School Board Members are expected to: Acknowledge their fiduciary duty to act with care, good faith and loyalty for the entire school, and discharge their duties accordingly; Actively participate at scheduled board meetings, retreats, and applicable committee meetings; Engage in strategic board governance; Champion and communicate the school s mission, vision, and core values; Contribute their time, talent, and resources to support fundraising efforts; Demonstrate decorum, discretion, and wisdom in the discharge of their duties; Follow the Board Protocols as adopted annually; Possess critical thinking and problem solving skills to strategically address the complex opportunities and challenges that may arise; Seek consensus and work collaboratively to reach decisions or generate ideas. Desired Professional Attributes/Experience Ability to exert influence to the benefit of the school within the community. Expertise in education, facilities planning, finance, external relations, marketing, business management or non-profit governance Interpersonal communication skills to conceptualize and bring life to the mission for SAS students, staff and parents. Demonstrated leadership in school activities and volunteerism (e.g. service as board committee member or PTSA involvement). Prior international school board experience or strategic board governance experience in other sectors. Time Commitment Annual board retreats and governance training (1-2 times per year) hours per month including board meeting preparation, board meeting attendance, committee meetings and related follow-up work. With two kids in MS approaching a transition point in their lives, my wife and I have struggled with whether to send them to prep school for more rigorous academic challenges. We concluded that there is more we as parents can/should do to nurture/support them and that we play a critical role in their final years of development before university. As parents, we can neither outsource nor abdicate our responsibility to help our kids become well rounded global citizens with strong values not only to succeed but also to enjoy happy and meaningful lives. I am keen to work with SAS stakeholders to ensure that the final years our kids enjoy here before they embark on their next chapter are not only fun but that SAS is sufficiently competitive and differentiated from other schools to equip them to transition successfully. I can well relate to their increasingly complex world, having been born in Taipei to a father born in Beijing, but having immigrated to Chicago at age 5. Although growing up American, I spent the past twenty years in Asia with Morgan Stanley from NY to HK to Beijing to Taipei to Shanghai, successfully collaborating with clients/colleagues in cross cultural/bilingual situations to build relationships and to solve problems. I have served in COO roles in Taipei/Shanghai and I am currently running the services company for UBS CMS as GM/Managing Director. Sc. degree In Animal Physiology and Neuroscience, University of California (UCSD); Google certified Education trainer. Work: Entrepreneur, founder of Israel s leading tablet based education company, teaching thousand of elementary school students computer science and more using ipads. Special Skills: Member of the founding team of a democratic school in Israel, currently on its 8th year with over 400 students. Establishing the NGO, recruiting families and staff, working with municipal and national authorities were all part of my activities as a volunteer. Volunteering and taking a leading part in shaping the society we live in, has been part of our family DNA for over 150 years. Being new to SAS Pudong I immedietly opted for a minor volunteering position (10th grade GLC), so to have an oppertunity to listen and absorb from some of the many activities which take place in our community. Through several educational activities I have been leading for nearly a decade, I have gained broad prespective and experience in education and community leadership. One has been the establishmnet of a NGO which runs a Democratic school. The school currently in its 8th year has been a sounding success in establishing a vaibrent community of involved students, parents and teachers. The other is a company I founded with my partner to provide 21st centry learning, laveraging ipads to teach a variety of skills. The company is now Israel s leading company in the field of ipad-based education, working with Ministry of Education as well as private educational providers, and teaching thousands of kids nation wide. Recent technological changes and the rise of the Internet are having disruptive affects on many industries, and education is no different. How should we teach, what should we offer our students, what educational experiences and skills we must make sure every SAS gradute gain. As a proud SAS parent, experienced management consultant, educator/trainer, I stand for three things: 1. Academic excellence and inclusiveness for our children. We need to ensure a rigorous challenging program while keeping opportunities open to all students. 2. Importance of partnership between the board and school administration, between parents and teachers to provide the best experience to everyone, so that we can continue to attract and retain talents. 3. Diversity and adaptability. We have families from all over the world. As a father of 4 children, ages 1 to 8, I represent both current and future parents of SAS. I have a passionate interest in my children s education and environment. Special Skills: I am well educated and experienced in both design and construction industries. I have personally managed a wide variety of projects for many well-known multi-national and/or Fortune 500 companies such as Siemens, Linde, Ford, GE, JNJ, Intel, & Amgen. I am highly specialized in construction project setup, budgeting, procurement, design management, onsite management, quality control, government liaison, and inter-disciplinary coordination. I am currently responsible for overseeing the entire project management operations for a medium sized Construction Management company. I am Rick Yuxin Pan, a parent of current SAS student. I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the work of SAS School Board in a board member position. I have been a dedicated member of SAS School Association and have been an active participant in School Board s Construction Committee. If elected, I would bring to this position the knowledge I have gained in various leadership roles outside SAS. I have served as the Managing Director of an interdisciplinary construction management company and have provided leadership on a variety of significant multi-national and institutional construction projects. I have a strong commitment to nurturing collaborative relationships. If elected as a Board member for SAS, I would use my leadership experience and expertise to initiate an exploration of the ways SAS may best meet the needs and recognize the contributions of construction experts and vendors through upcoming projects. No matter the field of pursuit, the world is a vastly changed place from 20 years ago in terms of the demand it places on our children s education. When I reflect on my career and recruiting experience what differentiates success is the ability to match passion and determination for a field with creative thinking and problem solving skills, effective communication and an ability to collaborate in teams and communities that are increasingly global. These skills are hard to teach effectively. SAS is strong at this. However, the school s environment is also a vastly changed place. There is increasing competition from other schools looking to excel and provide a differentiated education. For example, BISS has partnered with the prestigious Julliard School of Music to excel in Music education. To truly distinguish ourselves and hold true our mission of preparing our children to have the courage to live their dreams we need to strengthen our value proposition in academic, sports, arts and community outreach. I am fortunate to be a member of the Board Finance Committee this year. I have seen the significant progress made by SAS in its financial stewardship, positioning the school to achieve great things. I hope to contribute my background in strategic planning and development to help marshal resources in ways that create differentiated programs.
