Moreover, we tried to conceive some ex change programs by main cultural section. T oday, achievement s in the detailed study on concrete methods for cultural exchange between South and North are very few in comparison with those in the strategy for unification in political and economic field. T hrough the development of various exchange programs, w e will be able to design concrete measures for formation of South and North Korean cultural unity and seek for the prospect for a new culture of national unification. From this point, fir st, we attempted to analyze present condition of South and North Korean culture. Second, we inquired into important assignments and basic direction for 'the 21st century - oriented ' cultural ex change. T hird, exchange programs were considered by cultural sections such as performing art, traditional folk art, contemporary mass culture, daily life culture, and so on. In order to approach to the object of cultural ex change and unification, we must under stand exactly cultural situation in both sides and need to analyze objectively how to expand the ideology of coexistence. Here, w e inquired into Abs t r act / 225

each other ' s unique cultural logic and characteristics and examined to what element we must pay attention so that w e could create new culture of unification. In the process of unification, some radical troubles might be aroused betw een Southern and Northern resident s owing to conflict s of their different cultural aspects. It will be a important political subject for us to convert the expected cultural opposite elements into a positive foundation in forming the rich culture of unification. For this purpose, w e must seek for a harmonious cultural idea where various values could be compatible in substitute for existing bipolar w ay of thinking on culture. Until now, the level of South- North exchange program of cultural section is much low er than that of political or economic section. In particular, exchange in daily life culture is hardly accomplished, which might make us to participate eagerly in the actual process of unification so that w e could get over the difference between South and North. In general, cultural exchange tends to be accomplished by specialists or executives. Exceptionally, those who are in charge of exchange in the daily life culture could be general public because they are the subject of daily life. Moreover, the exchange of daily life culture can make residents the subject of unification, and let them learn how people of different culture, thought, and value could compromise and coexist in a harmonious w ay. Exchange program betw een South and North for the national unification w ould not end with just a banquet for politicians or specialists, but could be a shortcut for general public to create their own daily life culture. 226
