NEWS STORIES 평창패럴림픽장애인인권옹호미디어세미나 - 2018 Pyeongchang Paralympics Seminar for Media on Disability Advocacy 2018 Pyeongchang Paralympics Seminar for the Media on Disability Advocacy Promotion of Positive Media Reporting on the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities Main Objective: The seminar organised by the Delegation of the European Union on the occasion of the 2018 Winter Paralympic games to be held in Pyeongchang (Republic of Korea), is designed to raise the awareness of Korean Media on issues, such as discrimination, social exclusion and negative stereotyping. Regarding discrimination, the focus will be on disability, whilst discussing other grounds (especially gender) and intersectionality and ways to address the issue, in the absence of Korean legislation on non-discrimination; Regarding social exclusion, the focus will be on promoting access to Education, Employment and Culture and social inclusion through sport;
Regarding negative stereotyping, in the absence of official guidelines, code of conduct or processes in the Republic of Korea, the focus will be on best practices in other countries. Background: The Paralympics are bringing amazing athletes and inspirational lives to the spotlight. They remind us that the Paralympic games began as a sports competition involving World War II veterans and developed with values, such as Determination, Courage, Equality and Inspiration in mind. The European Union (EU) would like to seize the opportunity of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics to recall the values on which it was founded: democracy, rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms, respect for human dignity, equality, including gender equality, and solidarity. Teaming up with some local and multilateral organisations to promote those values beyond the 2018 Paralympics, the European Union wishes to address ways of ensuring that together we can contribute to combating negative stereotyping, building better living and working conditions and offering equal opportunities for all to contribute to Society. The activity should be seen in connection with the EU Award for Journalists, recently launched by the EU Delegation, to seek and recognise excellence in reporting on nondiscrimination and diversity during the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. In this regard, the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics/Paralympics - EU Award for journalists aims to support Korean journalists who contribute to raising awareness of the wider public on human rights, also in line with the Olympic spirit, and to enhancing the understanding of the EU s efforts to promote and protect human rights for all worldwide. The Olympic and Paralympic games provide unique opportunities to disseminate those messages. Date: Tuesday, 6 March 2018 Time: 14:00 18:00 (including a reception) Venue: EU Delegation to the Republic of Korea Target audience: Korean journalists (simultaneous interpretation will be provided)
