YWXY º º t rzyywxyhwy` ƒqh ƒ A Study on the Applicability of High-Performance Piles on Railway Bridges Õ ã äõ ãã äõôø ããã Il Tae Kim *, Seong Ryong Kim **, Myung Min Kim *** Abstract In the construction industry which includes the fields of civil engineering and architecture, steel pipe piles and PHC piles are the most commonly used type. Among the two, steel pipe piles have been mostly used because of its structural performance and constructability. For the raw material steel, we depend entirely on imports. However, high construction costs caused by increasing steel price, have resulted in less use of steel in construction. In contrast, PHC piles have excellent cost benefits but it is also restricted in large horizontal forces acting Structures. Therefore, the composite piles have been used recently which combine both the structural performance of steel pipe piles and the economic feasibility of PHC piles. In conclusion, the aim of this research is to study the characteristics of high-performance piles as the composite piles have shown the increased demand recently, and to study on the applicability of it on railway bridges.
