Glendale Unified School District Math Curriculum Grade 4 Parent Information Unit 1: Patterns, Whole Numbers, Place Value, Comparing and Rounding What Your Child Will Learn: Unit 1 sets the foundation for students to gain conceptual understanding of place value and rounding that they will utilize to master the fluency of addition and subtraction. First, students begin to reason about patterns, connecting a rule for a given pattern with its sequence of numbers or shapes. Then, students will extend their understanding of numbers to 1,000,000 by building the place value chart. They will learn about the relationship between each place value in the base-ten number system and analyze the relationship of numbers. Student will then read, write, and compare numbers based on the meaning of the digits in each place value.
