Glendale Unified School District Math Curriculum Grade 1 Parent Information Unit 1: Building Fluency and Foundations What Your Child Will Learn: Unit 1 sets the foundation for students to master sums (addition) and differences (subtraction) to 10. Students will then apply these skills to easily add single digit numbers that equal ten. They will review and extend strategies they developed in Kindergarten, such as number bonds and ten frames to secure a foundation to move into larger numbers and begin looking closely at place value. Students will also begin to develop skills and learn strategies such as making 10 to build a base for adding larger numbers quickly and improve mental math. Students will learn the relationship between these operations as well as begin learning how to read analog and digital clocks to the hour. MORE SPECIFICALLY, CHILDREN WILL LEARN HOW TO: Use addition and subtraction within 10 to solve word problems. Read two and three digit numbers to 120. Fluently add and subtract within 10 using various strategies. Begin to build the concept of place value with the ones and the tens place. Read analog and digital clocks to the hour. Standards: A: 1.NBT.1, 1.OA.5, 1.OA.6 B: 1.NBT.2, 1.MD.3 C: 1.OA.1, 1.OA.3 For more information on the strategies, standards and explanations, visit the California Framework at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccsmathstandardaug2013.pdf Some samples of the type of problems your child will be seeing in this unit: Number Bonds: Composing and Decomposing. Kin Students will begin by reviewing the Total structure of a number bond and how the parts make the total. Then they will move 7 into relating this to addition with finding the total and subtraction with finding the missing part. Also in this unit, they will begin to decompose numbers into parts to make tens and find strategies to composing larger numbers easily. 7 + 8 = 8+2=10, therefore I can decompose 7 into 5 and 2, add the 2 to 8 to make 10, then add 5 to make 15. OR, I could also decompose 8 into 3 and 5 and continue with the same process with the other number. Using Ten Frames: In first grade, the ten frames are used to count and add higher quantities. They can be used in conjunction with strategies such as making 10 and the number bond for students to develop these skills. Blank ten frames could be provided to students as a tool for counting, for addition, subtraction, and for support of other strategies.

Vocabulary: Sum: Total of two numbers Difference: The result of subtracting one number from another Place Value: The value of where the digit is in the number Number Line: A line with numbers placed in their correct position. Useful for addition and subtraction, and for showing relations between numbers. Practice making groups of ten with Legos and counting by tens or tens and ones. Practice counting from any number up to 120. Practice reading clocks to the hour. Questions to Support your Child with Math: What do the directions say? What do you need to know? What math vocabulary do you not understand? Can you make a model (drawing) or explain your thinking? Besides supporting your child with homework, show the importance of learning math by helping your child connect math with daily life. Point out your own activities that involve mathematics, such as deciding if you have enough money to buy items on a shopping list, finding the total number of fruits or vegetables you need to cook dinner for the week, or look at the time to make sure you will be on time, or find out when their favorite show might start.
