, 113 Rethinking Christian Pneumatology in a Reading between Jürgen Moltmann and Ch oe Han ki: Materiality, Wholeness, and Publicity of the Holy Spirit Baik, So Young HK Research Professor Ewha Womans University Seoul, Korea With a recognition of the urgency to formulate a common ground for living together among world citizens in a more and more globalizing world, this paper aims to broaden Christian understanding of the Holy Spirit in a language communicable to those who are not Christians By practicing a comparative reading of Jürgen Molt mann s The Spirit of Life and Ch oe Han ki s K i h a k[study on energy material], this article tries to overcome the traditional ways of explaining the Holy Spirit as solely spiritual, internal/private, and exclusively Christian As a result of being influenced by neo Platonic dualism that undervalues materiality, Christian tradition has regarded the Holy Spirit as purely spiritual, which transcends and has nothing to do with the bodies Such polaric understanding has been even reinforced when modern theologians accepted Descartes dualistic distinction between subject and object, and between rationality and emotionality, which resulted in emphasis on emotional and internal dimension of the experiencing the Holy Spirit As a representative text that tells the universal ontology of the Holy Spirit, which has been existed and worked since the creation, and its wholistic and public nature, which cannot be shrunk into
114 32 spiritual and private entity, Moltmann s The Spirit of Life has been chosen to be the text that interacts with Ch oe Han ki s Kihak In his academic effort to construct a wholistic cosmological system of the world, Ch oe sees Ki as the ultimate source of life given to the myriad things including humans By interpreting Ch ŏn gi[heavenly energy material] as the wholistic and public flow of life which dwells in all things, Ch oe insists that humans and things can empower and flourish the very lives and lead to develops human institutions to be harmony with the direction of Ch ŏn gi itself While reading Moltmann and Ch oe comparatively, I have found some affinities between these two scholars such as material, wholistic, and public dimensions of the Holy Spirit/C h ŏ n g i Both Moltmann and Ch oe criticize that partial understanding of the Holy Spirit/Ch ŏn gi is the result of failing to transcend particularity of the certain tradition to which the scholars belong If the Holy Spirit/ Ch ŏn gi is the universal power and source of life since the world has existed, Christian assertion that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ and is exclusively Christian loses its plausibility Inviting Christians to rethinking the Christian pneumatology that recovers the wholistic and public dimension which the Hebrew Bible s concept of r u a c h, which Moltmann has done in his text, this paper opens to the meaningful and fruitful conversations between Western and Eastern traditions that could find the common ground of flourishing life of the whole universe
