A B S T R A C T THE UNDERSTANDING OF KARS BARTH'S THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE" Han, Seung- J i n Depar tment of Theology Theol ogi ca l Seminar y of Hanshin Univer si ty T he purpose of this thesis is to inv estigate Karl Barth ' s theological thought based on his socio- ethic praxis in the political situation s. T o under st and Karl Barth, it is neces sary t o figur e out his socio- ethic pr ax is and theological thought. His theology w as tied t o the political situation s of ev ery day life those day s. In short, the political thou ght based on his socio- ethic pr ax is m ean s that the link betw een theological thou ght and socio- ehtic pr ax is in political situ ation s mu st be in separably con sidered. Such an emphasis on the relation ship betw een the theological thought and socio- ethic pr ax is is to criticize the pr oblem s of the tr aditional christology and the nin eteenth century liber alism. Now, I am g oin g t o explain the under standing of Karl Barth ' s political theology. In chapter 1, I w ill clarify the pr oblem in nineteenth century liber alism and pr esent the purpose, and scope of the thesis. His political theology w ill illumin ate our under standing of his socio- ethicl praxis and it s relation ship to his own political time. In chapter 2, I will deal w ith the beginning s and boundaries of Barth ' s political career. In chapter 3, Gospel and Law ', Barth formulated a new par adigm by sub stituting the order of Gospel and Law ' for that of ' Law and Gospel', thu s, he presented the guidance in helping under stand corr ectly it s r elation ship by giving the cont ent an d form as it s fram ew ork and he also pr ovided the basis for explaining the r elation s betw een the chur ch and stat e as ' Inner circle and Out er cir cle '. m ade it possible to set up n ew r elation s in interpr eting the chur ch and stat e by seeing Gospel and Law ' as the content an d form. In chapt er 4, I will deal w ith the r elation ship betw een Chur ch and St at e. In Barth ' s theological thought, the r elation ship betw een Chur ch and Stat e cannot be separ at ed and it is alw ay s in the process of bein g r ealized. T her efor e, Barth accept s the differ en ce and the r ole and the respon sibility betw een Church and St at e as inevitable. In chapter 5, as w e hav e seen in chapter 4, the christian community and the civil community accept a differ ence betw een the role and the r espon sibility as inevitable. E specially, the christian community has a special political r ole and r espon sibility for the civil community. In chapter 6, I w ill r eas sert Barth ' s theogical thought based on his socio- ethic pr axis in his ow n political time. Barth ' s political theogy is rooted in the responsibility which is inseparable from society and from w hich his political thought and his pr ax is arises. His political theology deriv ed fr om his own political experience. H e has political significance by realizin g a relation ship bet w een theological thought and socio- ethic pr ax is. T her efore, Karl Barth ' s political theology r eflect s the r ev olution of God. T he con cept r ev olution of God invites our participation into political society. T he participation into rev olution of God is the vict ory of God again st our faithless society. In Conclu sion, thr oughout his car eer s Barth continued to in sist on est ablishing political issues w hich gr ew out of participatin g of the pr oblem in his ow n time.
