from the President Dear friends: Greetings! 2014 is a significant year for National Chengchi University (NCCU); this is the year we celebrate NCCU 87th Anniversary from establishment in China, and the 60th Anniversary from resuming in Taiwan. The number 60 One Cycle of Sixty Years, has a special meaning to Chinese. Hence, in commemoration of this joyful year for NCCU, we present this book My NCCU, My Story to you. My NCCU, My Story is not just a book or one story; it is a collection of heartfelt voices and testimonies from 31 NCCU international students written in their own mother tongues from 17 countries, who came to NCCU to study, to experience, and to learn Chinese/Taiwanese cultural and social custom, and some of them make life-long friends at NCCU. The value of the book exceeds what it appears to be, the underlining of the stories indicates years of nurturing the vision and mission of internationalization and global mobility by the educators. I am deeply touched and encouraged by the students ability and maturity to appreciate and respect for a different culture and different study environment; a student from Japan wrote I got to learn different cultures at a deeper level it is like a special door that opens my eyes and takes me to a whole new place. I am grateful that NCCU gave me the key to this door, a student from the US wrote I was surprised to find such a diverse group of local and international students well mixed upon arriving here for the first time, NCCU strategic destination ideal for learning about Taiwan, China and neighboring Asian countries;" and a student from Spain wrote I have learnt a lot about the people, about their patience, kindness and generosity towards foreigners. Every day in Taipei has the potential for a new adventure. These are just a few samples of the masterpieces. 01 Cross-cultural experiences have become a precious asset for those who follow the global trend. NCCU has endeavoured herself to develop a multi-culture campus and academic aspect in order to accommodate over 1,500 international students each year, and NCCU has been cultivating and empowering her students to broaden their horizon in global mobility. For this is the age of building civilization to a higher level by continuously providing our youngsters with platforms to experience and accept different cultures and academic methodology. I look forward to continuing working with you to reach the goal in advancing our students to be equipped as elite global citizens. from the Dean Internationalization is a magic word. It means differently to different people. To us, internationalization is not merely about a few languages or a few focusing dots on the map. Rather, it is about a web and people who are connected with their tastes of lives and adventures to the unknown. What Internationalization does is to make these experiences unique but still accessible to those who are connected, so that they can be inspired and encouraged. Furthermore, internationalization is highly dynamic, indicating that the web is growing and potentially without limit, which provides a channel for us to meet different perspectives, suggesting that things can always be looked at from different angles. When multi-perspectives cross and interact, serendipities emerge, which become the engine of creativity and innovation required for a better and colorful future. 02 The concept of internationalization has become unveiled in recent years, and you can experience it almost everywhere under the sun and moon; and at NCCU, you experience the sun never sets. The volume which we proudly present here are her legends. In a place surrounded by bird songs of the Zhinan Mountain and water sounds of the Drunk Dream River, 31 international students narrate their legends with their mother tongues - Korean, Spanish, Indonesian, English, French, Czech, Polish, German, Japanese, and Chinese. Each heart is voiced authentically. While we humbly present 10 out of hundreds of languages in the world, this multi-language volume presents a spirit of cross cultural appreciation, and a glimpse of multi international faces from 66 countries of 5 continents on NCCU campus. We have decided to publish this volume using the story tellers mother tongues for two reasons. First, semioticians teach us that symbols are the power for life. The readers who are exposed to an international environment may not understand a foreign language, but they are able to watch, feel, and sense their existence. When walking through the pages, you can see how life is beautifully manifested through different symbols. Second, even though no single one can read this book alone, we are quite confident that this conundrum tends to disappear when there will be more readers with language heterogeneity joining our group. NCCU has placed internationalization as one of her agenda. Whatever we have done from building an international campus to enhancing international mobility and consolidating research collaboration, it is constantly in the span of these two underpinnings: the acknowledgment and appreciation of our coexistence. We present this volume as a manifestation of our belief and our devotion. Happy birthday, NCCU! Prof. Shu-Heng Chen Dean Office of International Cooperation My NCCU, My Story

I had been dreaming about studying in Taiwan since I graduated from university in Korea. After I got married with a Taiwanese guy and got pregnant, I had to wait until my son went to kindergarten before I could fully prepare for the entrance exam and go to graduate school in Taiwan. Now I study Chinese Literature at NCCU and it has been a very positive experience in my life.

Banana pie was a pair effort with other exchange students who attended the event called Baking Fun ( Where banana cake meets bubble tea ) held by NCCU International Youth at the end of 2013.

I am proud to be a student of College of Commerce at NCCU, the only one in Taiwan that obtained double accreditation (EQUIS and AACSB) and is highly recognized internationally. To me, life gave me the surprise to live in Taiwan for five years and to study in this beautiful university at NCCU. Here I had the opportunity to learn from the best professors and to make friends from people all over the world. NCCU experience is a new page of my life, and has made me a complete different person in no doubt an amazingly positive way. My NCCU, My Story
