5 공통과목(Extradepartmental Courses) 삶과 인문학 Life and Humanities 인문학을 시작하는 학생들에게 인문학이 무엇인지 소개하고 인 문학 전공자로서 사회에 기여할 수 있는 바가 무엇인지 알려줌으 로써 전공 공부를 위한 토대를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 를 위하여 인문학을 전공하는 학자들과 인문학을 전공한 후 사회 의 여러 분야에서 활동하고 있는 인사들을 초청하여 옴니버스 식 으로 강의를 진행함으로써, 수강생들에게 인문학을 공부하는 것이 자신의 삶과 사회생활에서 어떤 의미를 갖는가를 이해할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 이 강의는 수강생들의 유대감을 향상시키기 위 한 단체 답사를 포함한다. This course is designed to provide freshmen of the College of Humanities with a broad survey of diverse central problems in humanities. It is aimed at acquainting students with the aims, significances and methodology of various disciplines in humanities. It consists of a series of lectures by specialists in and outside the campus as well as a field trip intended to promote the solidarity of the students. 전공탐색과목 (Pre-major Tracks for College of Humanities) 한국어연구입문 Introduction to Korean Linguistics 이 과목은 한국어 연구, 즉 국어학은 어떠한 학문이며, 구체적 으로 무엇을 연구하는지에 대한 정보를 제공하고, 동시에 국어가 어떠한 특징을 지닌 언어인지 알아봄으로써 학생들이 보다 쉽게 국어학에 접근할 수 있도록 한다. 구체적으로는 일반언어학과의 관계에서 정립되는 국어학의 위치, 국어학의 하위 분야들, 연구대 상 및 범위, 국어의 역사적인 변화 양상, 현대국어의 음운, 문법, 어휘적 특징 등을 고찰한다. 이를 바탕으로 학생들이 더욱 깊이 있는 국어연구를 위한 기초를 다지도록 한다. In this course, the students will approach linguistics through an inquiry into the characteristics of the Korean language, allowing them to garner information about the type of science that Korean linguistics represents and what exactly is studied in this field. More specifically, the position of Korean linguistics in relation to other languages, its historical changes, as well as the grammatical and lexical features of the modern Korean language will be examined 한국문학연구입문 Introduction to Study of Korean Literature 이 과목은 한국문학의 연구대상과 연구 방법은 무엇인가 하는 물음에 대해 충실한 답변을 제시함으로써 학생들이 우리 문학 전 반에 대해 이해하고 우리 문학을 연구하는 데 필요한 기본 지식을 습득하도록 하는 데 목적을 둔다. 구체적으로는 한국문학의 개념과 범위, 갈래 체계와 역사적 전개 과정, 주제적, 미학적 특성, 전반 적인 작품의 실상 등을 체계적으로 고찰한다. 이를 통해 학생들은 본격적인 한국문학 연구의 기초를 다지게 된다. This course will offer comprehensive explanations on the questions concerning the study of Korean literature. It will provide the students a basic level of Korean literary knowledge that is needed to study and understand its works. Students will systematically examine the concept, scope, genre systems, historical development, as well as the characteristics of themes and aesthetics found in its literature. Such an examination will strengthen and sharpen the student s research skills for more advanced studies in this field 한국문학과 한국사회 Korean Literature and Korean Society 이 과목은 문학이 사회를 반영하면서 동시에 작품의 배경으로 삼기도 한다는 문학 일반의 원칙을 한국 문학 작품들을 통해 확인 함으로써, 학생들이 문학과 실제 삶의 연관성을 이해하도록 하는 데 목적을 둔다. 구체적으로는 시, 소설, 평론 등으로 짜인 한국 문학을 한국인의 삶의 현장인 한국사회의 관점에서 살펴보는 것을 주된 내용으로 삼는다. 이를 바탕으로 학생들은 본격적인 한국문 학 연구를 위한 기초를 다지게 된다. This course will help students understand the association between literature and life. Through Korean works, students will confirm the general principle that literature reflects society. They will examine Korean poetry, novels, and criticism in the context of Korean society; through this examination, students will strengthen their foundation for further, more thorough research into Korean literature A 한자의 세계 Understanding Chinese Character 한자는 중국에서 사용되는 문자이면서 동시에 중국의 전통과 현대를 아우르는 문화적 요소를 담고 있으며, 중국을 비롯한 동아 시아 공통의 문화유산으로서의 지위도 가지고 있다. 따라서 한자 에 대한 학습은 중국의 고대와 현대에 대한 이해는 물론 한자문화 권의 역사와 문화를 이해하는 데 필수적인 요소라고 할 수 있다. 이 과목은 한자의 유래와 발전 과정, 그리고 현대적 변용을 포함 한 한자를 둘러싼 여러 가지 사항들에 대해 학습하도록 설계되어 있다. 이 과정을 통해 수강생은 한자 자체에 대한 흥미를 높일 수 있으며, 더 많은 한자를 학습하게 됨은 물론 현대 사회에서 한자 가 담당하고 있는 역할과 전망에 대해서도 이해하게 될 것이다. Chinese Character Hanzi is the official character of China, and it contains many factors straddled traditional and modern Chinese culture. Hanzi is also regarded as a cultural heritage of East Asia. For those reasons, it is essential to learn Chinese Character to understand not only ancient chinese and modern chinese but also the history of the Chinese Character cultural area. This course deals with many matters surrounding Chinese characters, including origin, historical development of Chinese character, and its modern transformation. Throughout this course, students would be more interested in Chinese character and further understand the role and prospect of the Chinese character today 중국의 대중문학 Chinese Popular Literature 이 과목은 역대로 중국인들에게 친숙하게 읽혔던 대중문학 작 품들을 대상으로 하여, 먼저 개론적인 이해를 위하여 대중문학의 의미 및 가치, 사회적 전후 상황 등에 대해 살펴볼 것이며, 이후 개별적인 작품에 대한 심화된 접근과 부분적 강독이 이루어진다. 다루어지는 작품은 주로 소설과 희곡 장르에서 선별된다. 이 과정 에서 학생들은 중국문학의 주요한 면모의 일부를 심도 있게 학습 하는 기초를 마련한다. 6 중국현대명작의 세계 Masterpieces of Modern Chinese Literature 이 과목은 20세기 이후 창작된 중국현대문학 작품 중에서 명작 으로 널리 인정받는 시, 소설, 희곡 등의 작품들을 학생들이 직접 읽고 감상할 수 있도록 개론적인 설명과 강독의 기회를 제공한다. 이를 바탕으로 향후 학생들은 중국현대문학비평과 중국현대시사, 중국현대소설사 등을 심도 있게 학습하는 기초를 마련한다. This course gives students a solid foundation in the modern history of Chinese poetry, fiction, and literary criticism. It provides students with opportunities to read, interpret, and savor the masterpieces of poetry, novels, and plays from twentieth century China 중국고전문학탐색 In Search of the World of Chinese Classical Literature 이 과목은 중국고전문학의 개념과 그 연구대상 및 연구 방법 등에 대하여 알아봄으로써 학생들이 보다 친근감을 느끼면서 중국 고전문학에 접근할 수 있도록 한다. 구체적으로 학생들은 중국고 전문학의 개념과 범위, 장르, 역사적 전개 과정, 미학적 특성, 전 반적인 작품의 면모 등을 체계적으로 고찰한다. 이를 통하여 학생 들은 본격적인 중국고전문학 연구를 위한 기초를 다지게 된다. This course will familiarize students with the concerns, concepts, and methods of Chinese Classics Studies. Students will learn about the range, genres, processes of historical development, and aesthetic characteristics of Chinese Classics to form a solid foundation that is essential for future studies in this field 영어학입문 Introduction to English Linguistics 영문과 전공탐색과목. 영어학의 여러 분야와 분야별 언어현상 및 탐구방법 등을 소개함으로써, 영어학이란 무엇인가에 대한 이 해를 높이고, 영어학 연구의 내용, 방법, 활용 등에 대한 기본을 익히는 것을 목표로 한다. 전반부에는 주로 영어의 음성/음운 체 계 및 어휘, 문장, 의미 구조와 관련한 다양한 현상을 다루고, 후 반부에는 주로 영어사용의 화용적, 사회적 특성, 코퍼스 자료를 이 용한 영어 연구, 영어습득 및 영어교육 등 응용분야를 다루되, 각 분야 별 특징적인 현상들에 초점을 맞춤으로써 영어학 연구에 대 한 실질적인 이해를 돕는다. This is an introductory English linguistics course for freshmen who have no previous background in linguistics. It provides an overview of various fields in English linguistics, both theoretical and applied, and helps students understand what types of linguistic phenomena are of interest and how such phenomena are dealt with and analyzed in each field 영문학서설 Introduction to English Literature 영문과 전공 탐색 과목. 시, 소설, 드라마 등 각 장르에 걸쳐 작품들을 읽고 영문학 연구를 위한 기본 용어를 익히는 개론과목 이다. 비교적 해독하기 쉽고 길지 않은 작품을 영미문학에서 고루 다룬다. 영문학의 기본 개념, 정의, 문학 언어의 성격, 표현양식, 비평의 방법, 시작법의 기본원리로서의 프로소디 등은 작품을 읽 으면서 자연스럽게 습득하도록 한다. This preparatory course introduces the major genres and concepts of literary analysis in English literature, and is for all English majors Content and emphasis vary according to instructor 영미명작의 세계 The World of English Masterpieces 영어영문학과 전공탐색과목. 영문학의 대표적인 고전들을 선별 하여 읽으면서 문학 텍스트를 분석하는 법을 배운다. <영문학서 설>에서보다 더 긴 작품들을 읽으며, 소설, 시, 희곡 중 두 장르 이상을 다루는 것을 원칙으로 한다. In this preparatory course for English majors, students will read British and American classics in English and discuss topics pertaining to content, history, and form. Texts vary according to instructor 세계속의 프랑스어 French in a World Perspective 현대 유럽 문화의 한 중심에 프랑스가 위치하고 있다고 볼 때, 프랑스어가 유럽과 전 세계에 미친 정신적, 문화적 영향력은 엄청 나다고 할 수 있다. 이 강좌는 유럽을 넘어 세계 속에서 프랑스어 가 갖는 영향력을 유럽문화의 역사적 흐름과 확산이라는 관점에서 살펴보고 전 세계에서 프랑스어의 사용도와 인도 유럽어 내에서의 프랑스어의 계통을 중심으로 해서 유럽 인근언어와 한국어 등과의 형태적, 구조적 차이를 조명한다. The artistic, philosophical, spiritual and cultural influence of France on Europe and on the world is tremendous. This course views said influence through the historical currents and expansion of European culture. In addition, we will study the syntactic and structural differences between French, neighboring European languages, and Korean, focusing on the usage-rate of French in the world. Also examined will be the genealogy of French in the Indo-European language family 프랑스문학과 예술의 흐름 Trends in French Literature and Art 프랑스의 지식인들이 상아탑에 안주하기 이전에 많은 문학가들 은 작가인 동시에 음악이나 미술, 건축과 같은 분야의 비평가였고 심지어는 철학가이기도 했다. 이처럼 프랑스 문학은 예술의 전반 적인 흐름과 분리해서 이해할 수 없는데, 우리는 중세부터 현대에 이르는 프랑스 문학 작품과 예술 작품을 당대의 사상사적 맥락에 서 체계적으로 분석하고 그것을 우리 시대의 관점에서 재구성함으 로써 프랑스 문학과 예술의 전반적인 흐름을 이해하고자 한다. Before the early French intellectuals sought comfort in their ivory towers, many were critics of music, art, and architecture, and many more were writers and philosophers. Thus, understanding French literature is inseparable from understanding the currents in the arts. In this course, we will systematically analyse, from historical as well as contemporary perspectives, French literary and art works beginning with the Middle Ages and continuing to today. This tour will offer a better understanding of the general currents flowing in French literature and arts

7 독일의 언어문화 German Language Culture 이 과목에서는 독일의 언어문화를 여러 측면에서 살펴봄으로써, 독일어와 독일인, 그리고 독일인의 의식 구조를 깊이 이해할 수 있도록 한다. 구체적으로는 독일어의 유래와 특징, 독일어가 국제 사회에서 차지하는 위상을 살펴보며, 언어에 반영되어 있는 독일 인의 의식 구조와 인간관계, 그리고 여러 가지 매체를 통해 나타 나는 다양한 언어현상을 살펴본다. 이를 통하여 이 과목은 학생들 이 앞으로 독어독문학, 특히 독어학을 공부하는 데 필요한 기초 지식을 습득하게 한다. This course is primarily for students majoring in German linguistics. In this class, students will understand the German language, German people, and their way of thinking through various analyses and observations. Specifically we will examine the origin and the characteristics of the German language along with its international position and role. This course surveys the development of important German literary thought and treatment of its representative authors and their works. The course aims to clarify the relationships of the literary works and music and paintings, thus providing students with the ability to interpret and understand the artworks in German speaking world 세계속의 러시아어 Russian Language in the World 러시아 어학개론의 전단계로서 러시아어의 여러 특성들을 세계 의 다른 언어들과 비교하여 학습한다. 언어를 통해 러시아문화의 특성도 아울러 살펴본다. This is a preparatory course for Introduction to Russian Linguistics. It surveys various characteristics of Russian in comparison to those of other languages. This interdisciplinary course deals with historical, literary, artistic, social, political and cultural aspects about Latin America. Its main purpose is to explore the major trends of Latin American popular culture by focusing primarily on its regional and national diversity A 스페인 영화의 이해 Understanding Spanish Cinema 이 교과목은 루이스 부뉴엘, 까를로스 사우라, 뻬드로 알모도바 르와 같은 역량 있는 감독들을 배출하며 세계적으로 인정을 받고 있는 스페인 영화예술을 깊이있게 다룬다. 이를 통해 스페인 영화 의 고유한 미학과 국가적 정체성을 이해하는 것을 목표로 한다. 또한 스페인의 사회, 문화, 역사에 대해 폭넓게 이해함으로써 스페 인어문학 전공을 탐색하는 데 도움이 되도록 한다 This course is designed to do an in-depth study on Spanish Cinematic Art, in which many internationally acclaimed directors such as Luis Buñuel, Carlos Saura and Pedro Almodóvar have manifested their artistic genius. It seeks to understand the unique aesthetics of Spanish cinema and national identity of Spain. In addition, it helps students getting a better understanding of Spanish major by providing them with a broad knowledge of Spanish society, culture and history 스페인어권현대문학과 영상 Modern Spanish Literature and Screen Arts 현대 스페인어권의 대표적인 문학작품과 영화작품을 상호 연관 시켜 살펴봄으로써 본격적인 전공탐구를 위한 기초적인 지식을 쌓 는 것을 목표로 한다. 전공에 진입하지 않은 학생들을 대상으로

8 하는 만큼 스페인어권 예술의 정수를 감상할 수 있는 작품들을 선 정하여 포괄적이고 개론적인 접근이 이루어지도록 한다. 이를 통 해 스페인어권 문학과 영상작품을 관통하는 핵심적인 미학과 세계 관을 음미할 수 있을 것이다. 수업은 문학과 영상의 비교 분석에 그치지 않고 각 예술장르의 고유한 문법을 이해할 수 있도록 진행 된다. 틀에 얽매이지 않는 탐색 수준의 수업인 만큼 학생들의 창 의력과 상상력을 바탕으로 활발한 토론이 요구된다. This course views visual art, including cinema, one of the main art genres of contemporary Hispanic culture, in relation with Hispanic literature. Visual art is interpreting Hispanic literary works from a new perspective, and the students will come not only to a deeper understanding of the literary works but also a direct understanding of Hispanic cinematic aesthetic. Students will be expected to actively participate in class discussion with original and creative thoughts 스페인어의 세계 World of Spanish Language 이 과목은 스페인어의 세계적 위상과 스페인어의 구조적 특징, 그리고 스페인어의 유래와 발달사 등을 전반적으로 소개하는데 그 목표를 둔다. 따라서 스페인어를 제2외국어로 습득하려는 학생은 물론 이미 기초 스페인어를 배운 학생들도 수강할 수 있도록 강의 내용이 구성된다. 이 과목은 언어적 탐구만이 아닌 포괄적 언어사 회학 연구 강좌가 될 것이다. 또한 교수의 일방적 주입식 강의를 피해 학생들이 주마다 제기된 문제를 연구 발표 토론하는 대화 식 토론식 강의를 유도한다. This course will provide students a basic understanding of Spanish, giving them lectures such as the importance of Spanish language in the world, its structural characteristics and the origins and history of the language itself. So the class is both for the beginners and for who already has learned some Spanish grammars. This course is not only for the linguistic research but also for the sociolinguistic studies. Instead of being guided by one side teaching method from the professor, this class aims to be an example where students will be expected to actively participate in class discussion with the questions raised by the professors each week 스페인사회와 문화 Spanish Society and Culture 서어서문학 전공을 위해 요구되는 스페인 사회와 문화에 대한 기본적이고 일반적인 문제들을 탐구하고 이해하는 데 목적이 있 다. 8세기 동안 아랍의 지배를 경험하고 1492년 콜럼버스를 지원 해 아메리카에 진출하는 한편 근대 사회에서 구교를 수호하는 대 항종교개혁의 구심점이었던 스페인의 역사는 스페인 사회의 문화적 정체성을 결정짓는 주요한 요인이었다. 그러한 역사적 배경을 통해 스페인인들이 어떻게 사유하고 문화를 창조해 나갔는지 탐구해보는 일은 스페인어와 스페인 문학을 이해하는 데 긴요한 것이다. Historical uniqueness of Spain such as the confrontation with Islamic world during 8 centuries, the discovery of America and missionary passion for Catholicism provides a crucial factor in determining their cultural identity. Exploration of this history will enhance awareness of the originality and creativeness of Spanish culture, leading to a deeper understanding on Spanish literature 언어와 언어학 Language and Linguistics 인문학의 관점에서 인간 언어의 구조와 언어능력을 이해하도록 하며, 이에 관한 기존의 이론적 연구와 실제적 적용을 소개한다. 언 어표현의 형식과 의미의 관계에 대하여 다양한 시각에서 접근할 뿐 만 아니라, 특히 현대 언어학이 철학 문학 심리학 전산과학 신 경과학 사회학 수학 등과 어떠한 관계 속에서 연구되고 있는지를 살펴본다. 또한 최근의 언어학적 연구가 언어정보의 전산처리와 언 어습득, 언어장애, 언어교육 등에 어떻게 실제로 적용되고 있는지를 소개하고, 미래의 새로운 언어학적 연구 분야를 탐색하게 한다. Literature, philosophy, mathematics, as well as language acquisition, disorder, and change will be examined in this course focusing on the studies of human linguistic capacity from the scientific perspective Additional investigated areas are human linguistic ability, form and meaning of natural, as well as social language and computation 언어와 컴퓨터 Language and Computer 인간언어에 대한 연구가 여러 가지 정보축적과 정보소통의 문 제와 어떤 관련을 맺고 있는지를 소개한다. 인간의 자연언어와 컴 퓨터의 인공언어의 공통점과 차이점을 이해한다. 언어정보의 자동 처리 방법과 응용을 소개한다. 인간 언어에 대한 기초연구가 어떻 게 음성인식, 음성합성 등의 음성정보 처리와 구문 분석, 의미정보 처리에 응용되며, 현대 정보사회의 발달을 위한 정보검색, 요약, 필터링, 그리고 기계번역 등에 적용되는지를 소개한다. This course deals with the relationship between human language and computer processing. Included in this survey are linguistic communication and information, compiling and processing by computer, human language and artificial language, application of linguistic studies to computational information processing, speech recognition and generation, sentence parsing, semantic processing and inference, and machine translation 말소리의 세계 Phonetics 말소리를 어떻게 분류하고 어떻게 발음하는지 체계적으로 학습 하고, 이를 토대로 한국어, 영어, 불어, 이태리어 등 여러 언어의 말소리를 분별해서 듣고 정확하게 발음할 수 있는 능력을 함양한 다. 아울러 여러 언어의 강세, 리듬, 성조, 억양에 대해서도 체계 적으로 학습한다. This introductory course deals with phonetics. We will learn how speech sounds are produced as well as how to pronounce foreign sounds correctly. Sounds, rhythm, intonation, and tone of Korean, English and some other languages will be surveyed. 9 This course investigates the differences and similarities of the languages of the world while classifying them by geneology and typology. Students will gain a deeper understanding of universality and idiosyncracies of the human languages 한국사를 보는 관점과 자료 Korean Historiography and Sources 이 강의는 한국사를 전공하려는 학생 뿐 아니라, 한국사에 대한 기초지식을 습득하려는 학생들을 위한 교양강의로서 크게 두 부분 으로 이루어진다. 첫째, 고대로부터 현대에 이르기까지 한국사를 이해하는 시각(사관)이 어떻게 바뀌어왔는가를 개관하고, 미래의 바람직한 시각을 전망한다. 둘째, 한국사를 이해하는데 필요한 기 본적인 역사자료를 소개하는데, 특히 서울대학교 규장각 소장 자 료에 대한 소개와 현지 견학이 따른다. 강의방법은 교수의 구술과 시각자료의 제공을 병행한다. This class is for both Korean history and other majors. It focuses on how Koreans view their history and how their historical view of themselves has changed. Students are encouraged to consider the most desirable way of viewing history. The class will use extant historical materials that have been the basis for studies in Korean history for many years. In the beginning of the 13th century Chingghis Khan and his successors, leading about one million nomadic Mongols, conquered most of the Eurasian continent and maintained the world empire at least more than a century and a half. During this age of the Mongols various nations of the continent could widen their world-view through intensive contacts and intercourses, which was finally led to the birth of World History. This course will explain, first of all, the source of this drive, i.e., the secrets of the Mongol hegemony, and then the principles of management of the world empire. Early modern Korean literature was developed by accepting the influences of Western and other foreign literature. This lecture examines the most important writers of early modern period and their works, focusing on the many influences of foreign literature on their literary output. In general, the undergraduate courses, more than focusing on linguistic aspects of the language, are being focused on developing language capabilities required for communication with native speakers and interpretation of texts written in chinese. The purpose of this course is to emphasize the linguistic aspect of chinese language. Students enrolling in this course will have the opportunity to understand analytically distinct aspects of chinese linguistics such as phonology, writing system, syntax and semantics. This course deals with theory and exercise of Chinese pronunciation. Learning Chinese is very important not only for communications but also for understanding the societies or cultures of ancient and modern Chinese. Because Chinese sentences in written texts are different from everyday conversation, students need to enhance their reading and interpreting skills. This course aims at exercising interpretation of modern written Chinese, students would be able to improve Chinese ability, furthermore, understand Chinese in depth. The level of this course is relevant to Intermediate Chinese 2 or above, but this course places emphasis on reading modern written Chinese 한문문법 Classical Chinese Grammar 한문문법의 학습은 교양과정과 전공과정의 한문 교육을 통해 어느 정도 이루어지고 있지만, 종합적이고 체계적인 학습에는 한 계가 있다. 본 강좌는 한문 문장을 언어학적인 관점에 입각한 문 법적인 분석을 함으로써 고급수준의 한문 문장 해독 능력 배양의 바탕을 제공하고자 하는 목적을 갖고 있다. 따라서 본 강좌는 중 어중문학과의 전공 교과목으로 설계되었지만, 한문 해독 능력이 전공에서 중요한 여러 전공자에게 유익한 강좌가 될 것이다. This course improves students reading skills for high-level classical Chinese by analysing grammar on the foundations of linguistics. This course is opened to all students in the department who need abilities for interpreting classical Chinese 현대중국소설 Contemporary Chinese Fiction 현대중국은 개혁개방 30년을 거치는 동안 대단히 역동적인 변 화를 보여주고 있다. 인류 역사상 유례를 찾기 어려울 정도의 이 같은 변화의 양상은 문학에도 깊은 영향을 미쳤으며, 특히 그 속 성상 인정세태의 변화를 날카롭고 깊이 있게 반영해내는 소설 장 르에 폭넓게 흔적을 남기고 있다. 본 과목은 중국현대소설 작품들 에 대한 깊이 있는 독해를 통해 현대중국이 겪고 있는 사회문화 적 변모양상에 대한 보다 폭넓은 이해에 도달하는 것을 목적으로 개설된다. 한국어로 번역된 19세기말에서 최근까지의 다양한 단 중 장편 소설들을 미리 읽고 강의시간에 감상(발표), 논평, 상호 토론하는 방식으로 진행되기에 중국어 원문해독능력이 없는 저학 년 전공자들에게도 보다 넓게 문호가 개방되어 있다. Three decades after its opening and reform, China remains the most dynamic place in the world. The massive changes that China has recently undergone, almost unprecedented in all of human history, have affected literature as well. The imprint of these changes has been the most visible and varied in the genre of fiction, given the genre s tendency to reflect the changes in society and in people s lives with sharpness and depth. This course aims to achieve a deep and nuanced understanding of the sociocultural contours of the changes in contemporary China through close readings of Chinese fiction. Course materials will be drawn from a wide range of short stories, novellas, and novels from the latenineteenth century to the present, which will be read in Korean translation. Students will be required to participate actively in class discussions, offer their own analyses of the texts, and make in-class presentations. Chinese Novels in Ming and Qing Dynasty, represented by the Four Great Classical Novels or Six Great Classical Novels, are the essence of cultural and literal capability of those days. As a classic of the Chinese novels, they have been constantly recreated and reinterpreted in the various genres of the cinema, drama and animation up to this day. This course aims at understanding Ming and Qing Dynasty society through the novels of those days, and investigating the origin and continuities between tradition and modernity. By examining the historical importance of Traditional Novel heritage and its modern understanding, students enrolling in this course will be able to obtain better insight for further understanding Chinese tradition and modernity inclusively.
