The Korean Journal of Counseling 2004, Vol. 5, No. 2, 423-434 Effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavior Group Counseling For Body-Image Satisfaction and Self-Esteem Improvement of Obese Children Mi-Hee Jeon Korea Developmental Counseling Institute Choon-Kyung Kim Kyungpook University The purpose of this study was to develop an Cognitive-Behavior Group Counseling Program and examine the effectiveness of this program which has influence on body-image satisfaction and self-esteem of obese children through experiments. Participants are consisted 18 elementary school students who are the forth and fifth grades. They are divided in two group, the treatment group and the control group by means of random sampling. The treatment group children took part in group counseling program from 8th on October in 2003 to 1st on November in 2003. The treatment was accomplished by three times a week for 4 weeks. Cognitive-Behavior Group Counseling Program is composed of 12 sessions and include 5 steps: making relationship, self-recognition, coping with situation, coping with situation, termination. The instruments of measurement are Body-Esteem Scale and Self-Esteem Inventory. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation and was verified with a independent T-test between the treatment group and the control group observing differences between pre and post, pro and follow-up tests. The major results of this study are as followings. 1. Cognitive-Behavior Group Counseling Program improved body-image satisfaction of children. 2. Cognitive-Behavior Group Counseling Program improved self-esteem of children. As a subordinate position, even although self-esteem under social peer, home parents, and school academic, self-esteem under global wasn't improved.
