A Study on the Trans-migration of Korean-Chinese and the Change of Locality: The Case of the Chinese Food Culture Street in Jayang Dong, Seoul* Youngmin Lee** Yong Gyun Lee*** Hyunuk Lee**** Abstract: Through the advance of globalization-localization and the innovation of information and transportation, migration which transcends national borders has rapidly increased, and new patterns of migration have arisen in recent years. Especially, we need to attend the qualitative changes in the international migration, as this change derives on the attention on, so called, trans-migration which focuses on multi-lateral communication and mobility by migrants. Migrants, who practice trans-migration in the global age, are not inclined to limit their social relations into one local, but extend into diverse locals in the world. This research reveals the local embeddedness of the migrants social relations in the new settlement and also its effects on the changes of locality through Korean-Chinese in the Chinese Food Culture Street in Jayang Dong of Seoul. As the result of this study, trans-migrants are not simply adapting into the destination s social environment, but an active actor who makes local characteristics. Korean-Chinese people in the Chinese Food Culture Street make their social network to cope with the discrimination by the mainstream society. The Korean-Chinese networks form the social capital in the Chinese Food Culture Street, which perform to extend social relations among them. In the view of core society, the influx of migrants bring about positive and negative effects, deriving distinct social relations in the local. Various subjects co-existing in the local are embedding their social relations into the local, deriving the changes of locality.
