Journal of Educational Innovation Research 2017, Vol. 27, No. 4, pp.267-279 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.21024/pnuedi.27.4.201712.267 * The Meaning of Play and Play as Mimesis in Education Purpose: The purpose of this study is to derive the educational meaning of mimesis and to derive educational meaning of play and play(drama) as mimesis. The reason why the play and the play are discussed is that the researchers regard education as a mimesis of life and fit the discussion in such a viewpoint and fit well with the origin of the concept of mimesis. This study is not intended to claim that all of Mimesis is educational, but it has the intention of exploring the conditions of educationally meaningful mimesis. Methods: The researchers use the method of interpreting and questioning the educational texts related to mimesis, play, drama and education. Results: The concept of mimesis is understood as ethical imitation for Plato's, creative representation for Aristotle's, and expression of the subject 's identification to object for Adorno's. From this interpretation, considering that education is done in society and that it is aimed at active and autonomous individuals, it is considered that educationally meaningful mimesis should include elements of ethical imitation, creative representation, immersion and expression. The educational meaning of the play as mimesis is found in the process of restructuring itself which is the immersion subject, and object. The educational meaning of the play(drama) as a mimesis is found in that it can contribute to establish its identity through the immersion of the object. Discussion and Conclusion: Educational activities should not be understood only by one-sided teaching or learning of the instructor or the learner, but they need to be broadly understood by imitation, reproduction, and expression related to a number of objects.
