A B S T RA CT A St u d y o f t h e D i s p u t e a b o u t Re v o l u t i o n a r y Li t e r a t u r e Lee, Seung- Hee M ajor in Chinese Education T he Gr adu ate School of Education Kyung- Hee University T he thirty year s of Chinese contemporary liter ature might be in the pr ocess of a question and an an sw er. T hat is, it is another expression that mean s how literatur e r esponds and copes w ith the social ev olution and change of China. It prov es the impartable r elation betw een the unification and modernization of China which hav e passed through a semi- feudalistic and semi- colonial age. Based on it, in this thesis, I hav e studied the dispute about revolutionary liter atur e, which w as dev eloped through a year from 1928 to 1929. T his controv er sy is progres sed betw een thir d- term Chu ng Zào Shè and T ài Ya g Shè, rev olutionary literature party and L Xún, revolutionary liter ature party and Máo Dún, and the side of revolutionary liter atur e (Chu ng Zào Shè, T ài Ya g Shè, and L Xún ) and Xin Yuè Pài. T his thesis con sist s of four sections ; the fir st is intr oduction, the social and political backgr ound of the cont ention about rev olutionary liter atur e for second part, Marxism - Leninism for thir d part, and finally - 93 -
the process of dev elopm ent and the r esult of the argument. In the second part, I hav e resear ched int o the social and political backgr ound such as import of Marxism - Leninism and the rev olution of literature which w as an immediate cau se that br ought about the dispute. E specially, the thir d part is one of the advance pr eparation s to under st and the pr oletarian rev olutionary liter ature the rev olutionary liter atur e party pur sued. T he reason of that is that, I guess, the controv er sy about r ev olutionary lit erature has the sam e conception with the process of Chinization of the trend of literary of Marxism - Leninism flow ed in from Ru ssia and Japan after all and it ar ose in the middle of settlem ent of the ideology. T hrough this cour se, although it is difficult to look into the trend of liter ary of Marxism - Leninism at detail, it w ould be possible to roughly con sider most basic content s like the upper part of liter ature, clas s con sciou sness of liter atur e, the import of a story and it s form, and the way of story writing. T he 4th section can be lar gely separ ated into the dispute betw een Chu ng Zào Shè and T ài Ya g Shè about the hegem ony of liter ary w orld, orthodoxy, liter ary theory, and som ething like the ar gument of the class of realism and the clas s strife betw een revolutionary liter ature party which is the pr oletariat and bourgeois Xin Yuè Pài. T his paper r egar ded the mistakes of rev olutionary lit erature party revealed in the contention and its contribution to the development of contempor ary Chinese lit erature. Finally, I am afraid that I could not do mor e concret e analy sis and pr ofound inv estigation. I can assur e that the shame of today w ill disappear through strenuou s ex ertion s on the study of this subject. - 94 -
