Journal of Educational Innovation Research 2018, Vol. 28, No. 2, pp.213-235 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.21024/pnuedi.28.2.201806.213 A Critical Reflection on the Concept of Education Design Purpose & Method: The purpose of this study was to critically examine the concept of education design. The study reveals the essential attributes of the concept of design by analyzing the research literatures on design philosophy and the origins of design. In addition, the cases of accepting the concept of design in domestic educational studies were examined to clarify the primary characteristics of existing education studies. Based on the aforementioned set of analysis, this study suggests points to be considered reflectively in the concept of education design. Results: An analysis of design attributes showed three characteristics in common : comprehensive activity, the intersection of aesthetics and functionality, the power and ethics. Previous studies where design was studied in the context of instruction, curriculum, and school environment and other studies focusing on the education design itself showed the design in education, in most cases, was used as a strategic method with the aim of overcoming the problems of current education to bring about changes in future education. In conclusion, the results of a critical reflection on the concept of education design are as follows. First, a unique education design philosophy is needed. Second, education design research should not overlook the inherent dangers of design. Third, education design research should not be limited to pursuing the resultant aspects of design. Fourth, education design should not overlook the basic attributes of design, artistry and aesthetics. Conclusion: This study is meaningful in that it provides a basis for conceptual consensus that helps to solve the problem of vague and illegitimate use of the concept of educational design in education studies. This research is also expected to lead follow-up studies with themes such as education design philosophy and the role of education designers.
