The process of understanding and overcoming novice counselors self problems Ewha Womans University Yongmoon graduate school of counseling psychology The purpose of this study was to propose a substantial theory which can describe core experience and process in understanding and overcoming of novice counselors' self problems. This study conducted an in-depth interviews of a total nine novice counselors. The collected data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. 235 concepts, 69 sub-categories and 21 categories were derived from research result. Also, the paradigm model of central phenomenon was revealed as Encountering self which cannot be admitted and thus bumping into dead end. The core category was to head for the better path of growth by experiencing acceptance and change of unsolved self. The process in understanding and overcoming of novice counselors' self problems was the stage of revealing and confronting at self, the stage of working, the stage of not immersing and hovering, the stage of going through acceptance and change, the stage of meeting and accepting at self and the stage of growing as self and counselor. Based on this result, we provide discussion and suggestions for future researches about novice counselor' growth. This finding has significance on providing not only individual growth, but also development of expertise in counseling.
