Journal of Educational Innovation Research 2018, Vol. 28, No. 4, pp.413-440 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.21024/pnuedi.28.4.201812.413 A Qualitative Case Study on Integrated Art Therapy Program to Improve Empathy Ability of Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities Purpose: The purposes of this study were to investigate the changes in the behavior of adolescents by applying the integrated art therapy program focused on improving empathy for the adolescents with developmental disabilities, to identify the process of behavior changes, and to analyze what kind of intervention program facilitators were involved in. Method: Qualitative case study method were applied for eight developmental disabilities adolescents who participated in the program conducted by B City B Lifelong Education Center for this purpose. Results: First, in terms of behavior change, aggressiveness was decreased, the positive emotional expression was increased, and the understanding ability of others was improved. Second, from the aspect of empathy ability change process, psychological resistance such as anger was shown at the beginning, and this resistance decreased from the middle of the program, the self-understanding was improved, and the relationship with others was recognized. In the latter period, they had a bond with others and showed positive emotional interactions. From the intervention point of view, the facilitator intervened in formation of trust relationship, flexible program progression, inducing divergence of participants, and creative expression of participants. Conclusion: The empathy ability of adolescents with developmental disabilities can be developed, and integrated art therapy programs are effective.
