Perceived Parenting Attitude and Fragmenting Self Tendency: The Mediating Role of Self Structure and Defense Mechanism Sogang University This study attempted to find a pathway of influence among perceived parenting attitude, self structure, defense mechanism, and fragmenting self tendency. Self-report questionnaires from a sample of 495(N=495) adults in their 20's were used in the data analyses using the SPSS 18.0 and the AMOS 18.0. The Korean version of the Defense Mechanism Questionnaire-60, which was translated for the current study was included in the survey. Results indicated that the influence of perceived parenting attitude on fragmenting self tendency was mediated by self structure and defense mechanism. Implications of current findings in terms of the cohesive self structure as a protective factor for fragmenting self tendency are discussed. Intervention strategies for defense mechanism regarding image distorting and affect dysregulation for clients with fragmenting self tendency were discussed. Limitations of current study and suggestions for future investigations are included in the discussion.
