Maternal psychological control and university students depression: The mediating effect of autonomy need thwarting and socially prescribed perfectionism Dong-Ulsan Children and Adolescents Developmental Center Keimyung University The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of maternal psychological control on university students depression, focusing on the mediating roles of autonomy need thwarting and socially prescribed perfectionism. Three hundred and seventy five university students in Daegu participated in this study. A Psychological Control Scale-Youth Self-Report, Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale-parent-child relationship, socially prescribed perfectionism scale of Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and a Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale were administered to participants. Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS was used for the analyses of this study. The results of the current study were as follows. First, maternal psychological control significantly influenced autonomy need thwarting. Second, autonomy need thwarting had an effect on socially prescribed perfectionism. Third, socially prescribed perfectionism influenced depression. Fourth, maternal psychological control significantly influenced socially prescribed perfectionism. Fifth, maternal psychological control significantly affected depression. Results suggest that the mediating roles of autonomy need thwarting and socially prescribed perfectionism are important in the relation of maternal psychological control and depression. These results might provide directions for the research and practice of university students counseling. Key words : psychological control, depression, autonomy need thwarting, socially prescribed perfectionism, self-determination theory
